Suddenly, it all makes sense.

That whole team talk on the pitch was just to find out who had the boots.:D

USA and Columbus Crew midfielder Robbie Rogers scored one and provided two in our 4-0 Gold Cup rout of Grenada. Yesterday. Sure, it's only Grenada, but we are playing essentially a reserve team and it's good to see MLS players performing well internationally. Hopefully he'll have a good Gold Cup, and I think he might be a possibility for our WC squad depending on how Kjlestan plays; Columbus needed him yesterday as we fought out a nervy 1-1 draw With DC United.

i'll say. i have him on my espn fantasy squad but it seems like he hasn't had the same kind of year like last year...

No pachyderm, just... no. :p

It looks like they're slyly trying to stick a giant Bacardi sponsorship on there, rather like Coventry did all those years back with their 'Talbot' shirt.

Dreadful. The sponsor logo looks like crap IMO...

LOL. the heart wants what the heart wants....they also have the white without the giant bat... ;)

He's fast, plays on the left and can run at defenders, all qualities in short supply in the MLS. He also delivers excellent crosses and corners. His corners are as good as Schelotto's most of the time. What I'd like to see is a little more composure on the ball, but last season I saw him score some outstanding goals (in particular a second half strike against New York that could have been goal of the year). I'm hoping that his time with the national team will continue to polish his game, but I think he has the potential to become a top MLS player or perhaps even go to Europe.

In his favour, the lad has a proper footballer's name. Robbie Rogers. It sounds like the sort of name the lead character from an old football comic strip might have. ;)

:D It certainly rolls of the tongue more easily than Ruud Van Nistelroy or Charles Insomnia -er, N'Zogbia.

If only he was English :(

Like all American players, he's behind in terms of technical development for his age. But he would not look out of place in a decent football league side. He might be good enough to start for a Championship outfit and maybe hold down the bench for a mid-lower table Premiership side. In Columbus we rely on him to run up the left and deliver crosses; occasionally though, he can cut inside and beat defenders, and he has a decent shot. That's the part of his game we want to see more of.

Ah. Maybe not.

I'd love to see him move to the Premiership or Championship, but he'd have to use his pace much more often than he does in the MLS, so his fitness would be tested. The English still don't rate American players (with a few exceptions), it's more likely he'd go to Germany or Scandinavia.

Good to see Benayoun signing a contract extension with Liverpool - I was impressed with his performances last season.

Now, Alonso...will he stay, and if not do we buy someone - and who would that be?

So Ronaldo was introduced to his new fans in a ceremony at a sold out Bernebeu. Sheesh, running up to the stadium just to see the Greasy One waltz around in his new kit? They could at least have made him juggle the ball around and take some free kicks or something, eh?:D

Yeah, it's great news. In my opinion he is a great sub. He comes on the pitch late and turns the game around time and time again

I heard they charged £1,000 for each ticket. They have to pay for him somehow right? :p

Good Morning (at least here in the US).

Quick teaser for you all. (Kingston-upon-)Hull was famously known for a long time as the largest English city never to have had a team in the top flight.
Of course, that honor has passed on since City's rise last year.

Which city holds the honour now?

That'll be Plymouth – Argyle have never played in the top flight.

Actually, I read a while back that - even if we hadn't been promoted last year - we would have lost the mantle of 'largest city' in a couple of years anyway. Plymouth (and Milton Keynes too, I think) have expanding populations while Hull's is shrinking a bit - therefore they'd be 'bigger cities' than us.

The question is, if Milton Keynes surpasses Plymouth in size, would they hold the honour since technically the Milton Keynes dons used to be Wimbledon, who were in the top flight.

I think the answer from all right-thinking folk would be 'No!' :p

Even aside from the 'are they Wimbledon' thing (and after a battle they have relinquished all claims to Wimbledon's history and trophies), Milton Keynes would still never have had a top flight club, as Wimbledon never played there. If you see what I mean.

Mind, the wording when we were the biggest city had to be watched. It was right to say we were the largest English city never to have had a top flight team – but we weren't the largest English city to have never hosted top flight football. Leeds United actually played a First Division match at Boothferry Park in the early 1970s – Elland Road had been temporarily closed as punishment for crowd trouble – so top flight football had made an appearance in Hull before we hosted Fulham last August.

Just as a small aside... the Premier League has launched its Fantasy Football League for the new season, and I was planning on setting a MacRumors League up, as we've done in previous years. Anyone up for that?

There's something to run by any interested parties, though. This season, there are two different sorts of leagues you can set up. The first is the standard fantasy football league where you pick the players, they score points and you accumulate a total as the season chugs along. Nice and simple, and what we're all used to.

However, there is a second option. Those who played last year will remember that – as well as the various private leagues you could join – you were also put into a 'head-to-head' league with random punters. This year, you can actually set up your own head-to-head leagues with your mates.

How it would work is that each week you're randomly picked against another MacRumormonger, and your two teams go head-to-head, as it were – essentially, you're trying to outscore your opponent that week. Whichever team scores the most fantasy points wins, and gets three league points – the loser gets no league points and if it's a draw you get one each.

I'm thinking this new variant would be an interesting one to try – for one thing, it puts you in direct contest with another player each week so it has the potential to result in a bit of friendly rivalry and fun banter, as it were.

So, to cut to the chase, is anyone interested in the MRFL returning for the 2009/10 season and if so which version of the league would people prefer to play?

Oguchi Onyewu signed for AC Milan today. Talk about a big step up...

Awesome! I hope he can work his way into a starting position. You'd have to think that the Confederations Cup performance is responsible in part for the move.

I'm up for either...the head-to-head option sounds very interesting though!

I'm in. Let's do both then. ;)
