At the end, FIA will have to cave in and largely go with the FOTA proposals (which are quite reasonable).

The problem is the FOTA proposals aren't clear, apart from them wishing not for there to be a two tier system (something which we can all agree on), and the budget cap being too low. Ferrari don't seem to want any budget cap (Turkey, Christmas anyone?) while the other teams are more amenable. The FIA just wanted to introduce incentives for adhering to a budget cap. I wait with baited breath as to what FOTA decide is an acceptable decision.

RE the drivers: I know that driver salaries aren't included in the plans. My idea was that because more teams would be able to comfortably afford a budget that could compete, there would be a lesser need for teams to run "paying" drivers; opening up more opportunities for new drivers than there are at this moment in time. I think some (especially USF1) will go for a mixture of youth and experience - Marco Andretti and eg Sebastian Bourdais (former racer in states, well known to US fans, experience in F1) seemed like a plausible route they could take due to the lack of obvious US drivers wanting to drive in F1. Scott Speed maybe?

Please tell me that was sarcasm. He should never be let near a Formula One car (or team) again.

You of all people knows Scott Speed is a no-no!:D My point was to exaggerate the dearth of qualified American race drivers. I was thinking of the points made by the owners of USGPE, and thinking of qualified US drivers, and those willing to drive in F1. Most (Busch etc) drive in NASCAR - not ideal for F1. Dannica Patrick is being touted because of her being a her, but apparently she's not great on street circuits. My main thoughts were regarding Dan Wheldon (British, I know, but doing very well there and wants to drive in F1), Justin Wilson (doing well with F1 experience but again Briitsh) and someone like Bourdais or Montoya (who, again is unlikely to get a drive). I chose Bourdais because he's already there, and has good race pace despite disappointing qualifying performances, and Andretti because of a previous impressive test with Honda and a desire to race in F1 coupled with THE name across both sides of the pond.

On a side note, it was interesting to hear the BBC's speculation on Alonso joining Ferrari along with Santander. Autosport have in the past stated that some companies feel uncomfortable with sponsoring F1 teams with a tobacco sponsor amongst them. Santander taking over as main sponsor would lead to interesting repurcussions re sponsors.

I definitely don't like the kid.

Why does USF1 need an American driver? I'm under the impression that good American drivers is pretty slim. (Maybe thats because I talk to too many Brits;)

USGPE have stated they want to tap into the US advertising potential, and to do that they stated they wanted US drivers. My thoughts (Bourdais and Marco Andretti) were because of their willingness to drive in F1 [many US drivers seem happy in NASCAR] and an experience in open wheel driving. Dan Wheldon and Dario Franchitti are the most recent winners of the IRL, but are both British and over 30, making it difficult for them to move over easily (family etc). Dannica Patrick is really only mentioned because of her gender.

as an actor i like frankie...

we'll see soon enough whether he can race or not.

i for one don't care that much about a teams or a drivers nationality.

Just heard Bernie on the radio. He claims a deal has been done: no two-tier system, one set of rules for all. So most likely no existing team will be leaving...

I agree. Just seeing Frankie in the short video clip posted above made me see that he's too immature right now. I say the USF1 should pull the best talent they can from ANY country. For me its not so much about national pride, but team pride. National pride comes from me when I myself can help in some way. I DO care about the drivers personality. Its sad to see Hamilton lose his charisma in front of the cameras due to the lying scandal.

Sorry to jump in on your thread guys and gals but ... just to share my thoughts ...

Myself and a few friends used to take ourselves down to the coast (Bournemouth) for the weekend when the race weekends were on during the summer months. Always had a great time and a few beers ;) All involved had fun, watched the race and were able to cheer on their favorite. These days I can not even rustle up the boys to watch F1! There is very little competition in the sheer driver skill and courage anymore.

Just my 2p worth.

i can't argue with any of that. i still love it though.

GO JARNO!!

Nigel Roebuck, one of the two F1 correspondents for the US periodical Autoweek published an opinion piece where he believes that this whole cap thing is an attempt by Max and Bernie to break FOTA because the two have always been able to play the teams against each other, but they see FOTA as a threat.

Seems Bernie was right ...

Autosport.com said:
Bernie Ecclestone says that although Friday's crunch meeting between the teams and the FIA ended in stalemate over the budget cap, both parties did agree that the controversial two-tier system should not go ahead.

... "I think the most important thing that upset everybody, they didn't like, was this two-tier technical system, so I think it has been agreed that we shouldn't have that. We should have just one set of regulations," he told the BBC.

"I think everybody is more or less happy with the budget cap. Just how much. They'll go with it higher [than £40 million], maybe it'll be lower. It's a case of just sorting it out.

"Everyone will be under the same regulations."

It seems we'll have a higher budget cap, but one rules. Sounds like a compulsory cap then for everyone next year then. We'll see how this plays out.
