Well you are the opposite of the pens then. We are still giving the same 7th dmen from the beginning of the season everyother game off but we have several lines of AHL on forward. Might make the playoffs yet but how deep?

The B's / Habs game was serious at ~187 penalty mins and the Pens / Islanders just about doubled that. I'm sure I'll get slammed for this but here goes -- I'm all for a good hockey fight but it is getting to be street fighting.

The Isles-Pens game was ridiculous, and completely not necessary for the sport. Im also all for fights, and physicality, in the game, but the line was crossed during that game.

I am not going to slam you but it's not like it's like that every game. The Pens game was a league record I think. I might be sick but I actually enjoyed it. It's just something you don't see every day. I mean our back up goal tender has been in 2 fights this year. How often does that happen? Love that guy. But the league needs to fix up. They put that islander in the box and he came back out and fought and then they through him out of the game and he was standing in the hall mocking an injured pen. This is way across the line. The officials should be gone from the NHL. They screwed up. Several things that night they could have put a lid on and they didn't. Personally I don't like the enforcers and the pre aranged figghts. This has no place in the league IMO.

Which part did you enjoy then? I'm guessing it wasn't the elbow to the head near the boards that Tangradi took, Haley going down to attack the goalie after he just finished another fight and should have been in the box, or near-sucker punch that the one guy nearly took in the middle of the ice from behind? These all happened to be towards the Pens and I'm hardly a Pens fan (or an Islanders fan for that matter).

I was at the B's / Habs game last Wednesday and being from Boston and in Boston with the B's up and winning the fights -- it was the most exciting game I've ever attended. Looking back at the replays, it was getting out of hand and it is clear that it is not over between these two teams. It will escalate until the next person's career is ended.

I love the physicality of hockey and the concept of sticking up for your teammates / etc... but lines need to be drawn with other mandatory penalties like the one for leaving the bench (despite the fact that the goalie was being attacked unprovoked [from what we saw on camera]).

Anyway - hopefully things settle down a bit with the vendettas.

oh please.

go look back at some fight videos from 30-40 years ago. things today, even the pens/isles, is tame compared to that.

B's/Habs brawl from the early 70s

Watch that one. they clear all the benches and are beating the crap out of each other. somehow Derek Sanderson ends up in the montreal bench fighting a habs guy, and then the fans get involved. it ends up the bruins, a bunch of bruins fans, and a few boston cops fighting the entire habs team. thats real old time hockey.

or how about the time the bruins players ended up in the stands of MSG fighting the players, and milbury started beating the guy with his shoe?

I was there too. those **** talking habs got what they deserved. that team is a bunch of ******* who like to talk but won't back it up. look at subban. he was talking and being a bitch to horton all game, but when lucic tried to get him to throw down at the end, he bitched out. then lucic tried to get him to throw down with horton, and he bitched out again.

that team is a bunch of soft pansies. if you are gonna talk like they do, you better be ready to throw down. and they weren't. you really think guys like thornton and boychuk were out there just fighting for no reason? nope. those guys were talking **** all game, not to mention the way the last game between those two teams ended, so they deserved what they got. nobody even got seriously hurt. (remember the lucic-komisarek fight where looch owned him and komisarek was out for 8 weeks with a separated shoulder? "AND LUCIC TAUNTS THE MONTREAL BENCH!!!"

I cannot wait for the march 24th game.

Unprovoked? Johnson decided he was going to be a bad ass in the last game, and ended up knocking out dipietro for 6+ weeks with a broken face. That's why it all happened.

The fight was mutually agreed apon so glass Joe depietro thought he was a hard ass too. It was one punch and Johnson held back when he saw dood was hurt. That fight happened because D clipped cooke and apparently cook was running D the game before that and who knows what else. No one knows where these things begin bit it has to stop somewhere.

Ah, fighting.

As a Canadian, I'm supposed to have a genetic predisposition to loving it in hockey. However, I don't love all forms of it.

I do think that it's a part of the game, and that it shouldn't be removed from it.

However..... there is a time and a place for fighting.

If there's a chippy play, and a player gets pissed off and wants to drop the gloves to defend his teammate or himself, that's fine.

If two players have been going at each other all game, slashing each other's legs, face-washing during scrums, going out of their way to hit each other harder, and tempers boil over, drop the gloves and fight. That's fine.

If frustrations boil over because one or both teams have taken some cheap shots at each other all game, or if one player is targeting the other team's star player, or there has been bad/inconsistent reffing and the players feel that they need to settle things themselves, fight away.

All of those examples (and a few others that I'm sure I've missed) justify a fight.

Here's what I don't like:

When two tough guys are lined up before a face-off and they ask each other to fight in order to justify their existence on the team and in the league. Or when a fight breaks out because said tough guys are skating near each other during a play, and they ask each other to fight. This is when it becomes a sideshow. It seems so staged and so hollow. There's no real anger or frustration. Those guys play 5 minutes a game and are only there to take on the other team's tough guy. It's a waste of a roster spot.

Sure, hockey in the 70's was more violent than it is today. There were more bench-clearing brawls. The powers that be decided that they needed to let the Game be played that way in order to attract more fans. The 70's is the reason this expression was created: "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out." I don't think that the Game was necessarily better in the 70's because of the extra violence. One thing's for sure: the fights back then were out of dislike/hate for the opposing team/player. They weren't staged by a couple of guys trying to justify their roster spots.

Fighting is a part of the game, but it should only happen when it's called for.

^^ well put. I'm talking to more and more fans (many Canadian) that believe going to college/intl rules is the way to go. Personally I don't agree with that. We will see how this progresses in the meantime.

You have to consider that hockey took a back-seat to entertainment, when the Original Six was expanded.

Old-time fights occurred because the skill levels were extremely tight, so frustration was high.

Now, the talent pool is so thin, as long as a thug can skate to keep up with his target-de-jour, he has his fortune made.

Signed: No longer a fan.

I didn't say I wasn't mad about what happened. I am but it was entertaining for me at the same time. Hard to explain lol. I guess the game could have been very boring. It wasn't an the last meeting between the teams wouldn't mean anything but now it will. It's the second to last game I think. I expect stars searched assuming we have some in the lineup at that time.

lol ... Ok we will take the damaged goods Malkin of his hands

Everyone here wants to ship him off for a high scoring forward which is what we already have in him lol. He hasn't had an easy time since he won the cup but you don't get rid of a guy like that unless you have to.

He finally got the monkey off his back and scored twice against the Bruins tonight...... we won 4-3.

I think he's a keeper.

Kessel and Grabovski played incredibly well. Bs showed up for around one period or so and got beat very fairly -- especially with Grabovski's final goal. I have no idea how that guy kept the puck the whole way. Going to be a tough 6 game road trip if they don't find some mojo. At least it starts with the [rallying] Islanders and then the Sens.

Bs acquired Chris Kelly from the Sens last night. Hmm..

We will give you Kaberle for Lucic ... and we're keeping Kessel

You better be sending back every Leafs first round pick through 2027 for that. Lucic is untradeable. He's 22 years old, and oh did we mention he has more goals than Ovechkin?

god damn Chiarelli is an idiot. Chris Kelly? Just what we needed.. and old guy who plays center (we only have like 7 of them) and doesn't score goals (must have like 9 of them). must be part of his and Claude's awesome plan to keep Seguin on the 4th line wing and turn him in to the next Dan Paille.

Neely needs to axe both those clowns and get some people who actually know how to run a hockey team. We are destined to not make it past the 2nd round ever until that happens.

@Surely: congrats to your boys for winning a game against Boston :p Don't get used to it though

Well Pens beat the Avs last night lol. It was a good game. Now we should get a few guys back. Cooke for sure. Maybe Kunitz, Jeffery, Letestu soon. Going to be some tough games upcoming.
