They also gave Ilya a tour of the city...even took him to Genos Steaks...and they already named a cheesesteak after him...i think a deal is done..but they technically can't release any information on a deal until at least draft day.

Should of went to Tony Lukes...;):D

I've read a deal may be announced in the next 48-72 hours. They don't have to wait for draft day.

They need to work put who they'll be trading/demoting/buying out to make room. The Flyers have no cap space right now.......

First of all, let me congratulate the Boston Bruins and their fans. Boston looked like a team better suited for playoff hockey. They exposed the Canucks' weaknesses better than any other team in the playoffs. Tim Thomas was outstanding and as a fan of his I'm happy to see him lift the Cup. Congrats to Lucic too. Must be special for him to lift the Cup in his hometown. Congratulations to the deserving winners.

I watched the game tonight in downtown Vancouver on Georgia street. It turned into the center of the chaos after the game. I witnessed as people destroyed the large screens that were several meters in dimension, lit cars on fire, broke down a major bank, coffee shops, and other retail stores. The riot police did an admirable job pushing back the hooligans who fought the police as if the Canucks loss was their responsibility. Then came the mounties (police on horses) which people didn't mess with.

There were people who were teargassed and pouring water in their eyes right in front of us. My friend Sarah and I just about got run over by the stampede of people being pushed back by the riot police. I was pretty alert. I didn't want her to get hurt.

There was a Boston Bruins fan in a Bruins jersey walking on Granville street surrounded by a**holes. Some people made violent advances towards him. But I was encouraged to see some fans with common sense and respect intervene each time and stop him from getting hurt.

Words can't sufficiently describe how appalled and disgusted I am. Got home about half an hour ago. Too many drunk idiots high on adrenaline committing crimes as if they were justified. There were lots of fans who took defeat and went home gracefully. But there weren't enough people trying to disperse, go home, and let the chaos die down. Rather, they remained spectators and participants. As these hooligans spread out, things are becoming more difficult to contain.

I am actually in tears right now for this beautiful city and some respectful fans who clearly won't be seen that way. To me this is absolute horror and not a good representation of this city and the people as a whole. But it's hard to believe that seeing what we're seeing.

In other parts of the world, they fight and die for freedom, equality, rights. Here we make this mess all because of a game..

I had the privilege of seeing the true Vancouverites respond to the riot. Over ten thousand people showed up the day after to clean up the city voluntarily. I went into downtown again today and there's really no signs of there ever being a riot. Instead, there were boarded the messages written on the boarded walls and windows, the flowers, and other things showing the appreciation for the police, fire department, volunteers.

Here are some photos if you're interested.

That's good to see. Thanks for posting.

Some Russian guys showed up to drop in practice today where I play and were total jerks- high sticking and yelling (they weren't very good either and blaming others for their own mistakes). We ejected them. We have no time for poor sports or a**holes, especially at practice. It's too bad they were acting like that after what happened in Vancouver.

Thanks for posting -- clearly the real Vancouver fans were out.

Local parade was a bust yesterday -- ended up drawing with chalk on the driveway. This kid thing has me

Good to hear. Again I stick by to believing the riot was going to happen regardless and was executed by thugs no fans.

this is for zioxide. :) not the same type of parade you were at, but still....

a video from my hometown in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. I think this is fantastic b/c it's been truly a long time for the bruins.

good for them! I was really rooting for the underdog Thomas. He hunts so he must be a decent guy and he came from nowhere to make it and played fantastic.

I will say this....I don't like the trend:

Chicago's long streak - over
Boston's long streak - over

The leafs long streak....dear God please don't let the Leafs win anytime soon. That would go against the grain of how life is supposed to be. lol

As a Habs fan, I cringed when Boston won, but as mentioned, happy for them. Now if the Leafs ever win, I'll truly hate every nanosecond of it. I wouldn't like it one single bit.

Why spend money to build a winner, when you already have full-houses?

They need less micro-managers, and one committed owner, to pull it off.

and that's exactly why they deserve to keep losing. it's like the yankees or boston never trying to get the best FAs to boost their rosters. shameful to their fans the leafs org has been.

The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (79.5%) has been a big stumbling block, in my opinion.

They just want profit, and are only concerned with the bottom line.

Leaf fans, and there are still millions, need to vote with their feet and their wallets, or nothing will change.

You'll cry when she goes home. :D

You are a true fan, sir!

As a Habs fan you'll like this link -- as a B's fan (and a huge cynic) I got a good laugh from this.

I don't think that this is a good argument anymore, if it ever was in the first place. It was a more reasonable argument prior to the lockout and salary cap, but I don't think it can hold water anymore.

Now that there's a salary cap, it's not like the Leafs can spend more than anyone else to build a team. The Leafs have been at or near the top of the cap ever since there's been a cap, and even before the lockout, the Leafs were spending more than almost any team in the league.

To think that the OTPP is sitting there and saying: "Okay, all we want is profit so.....let's keep losing." makes no sense. If the team were to make the playoffs, they'd make $1 million plus each game. The ACC would be sold out, and all other eyes in TO would be on their TVs, watching those commercials and seeing those ads on the boards. If they make it to the finals or win the Cup, imagine the amount of money the fans would spend on merchandise.

The real problem in Toronto is the fans and the media. These are the real reasons why we haven't had success since the early 90's. Every little move is scrutinized. Every winning streak means we're going to win the Cup. People just don't have the patience for a true rebuild in Toronto. When a GM starts to panic (like JFJ did), he signs over-the-hill players to ridiculously high and long contracts (McCabe, Tucker, Blake, etc.), and either gives them all no trade clauses or makes their expensive contracts untradeable. That being said, I think that Burke has been managing the team and the fans/media quite well, and hasn't succumbed to the pressure.....yet.

We have to, at the least, make the playoffs this season. If we don't, more changes will come and it'll be yet another setback for the Leafs.

EDIT: I'm sure you remember Harold Ballard, right iJH? Now that guy was only concerned about profit, and he drove the Leafs into the ground in the 80's. He didn't care about the product on the ice, and only cared about how he could squeeze another penny out of the team. For example, when the league made it mandatory that players' names be displayed on the back of their sweaters along with their numbers, Ballard didn't like this. He thought it would eat into the money he made from selling programs (the rationale being that people bought them in order to identify the players on the ice). So his solution: put white letters on white sweaters, so they couldn't be seen. He figured that he was following the rules. Obviously, the league didn't allow that nonsense to go on.

Interesting article about how negotiations with some of the top possible free agents are going. I think Weber and Stamkos will stay for certain-both those teams cannot afford to lose their respective player. Nashville is smart to take him to arbitration and I think Stevie Y should consider the same thing. Parise is a push-arbitration may actually over value him so we will see.

I am actually not surprised that Doughty didnt go to arbitration-having had to suffer several years of Lombardi headaches, he never struck me as someone who was willing to do it(TAKE A HINT DOUG WILSON!!!!). However, in this case, if he does not lock up this defensemen, he will loose him-someone will pay him handsomely and then you be forced to pay an extortion fee.

Well, they have cap space now. The salary cap for 2011-2012 has been raised from around $59 million to $64 million. I guess that's what they were waiting for......

boy do i remember harold ballard! Those games in the 80s were fantastic on Saturday night - the leafs would suck just enough to put up a battle and lose. Even as a kid, i knew something wasn't right about that owner and his greedy style.

But then again, my laughing has come full circle to b*itch slap me b/c i Like the Oakland Raiders and I think Al Davis is Harold Ballard's brother. doh!

We were talking a week or two ago about realignment due to the Winnipeg Jets (which, I've heard will be the name of the team due to public pressure).

I just heard an interview of Ken Holland (executive VP and GM of the Red Wings) on PrimeTime Sports on the FAN590 (Sirius 157). He said that Red Wings management and ownership would love it if the Wings were relocated to the East. He said it would be better for the players and better for the fans (less West Coast late starting away games). I don't think he specifically said that they were pushing for it, but I was under the impression that they've expressed their wishes to the NHL.

------------

So the Leafs decided to hire two new assistant coaches (Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin) to replace their current assistants. Basically, without actually saying it, they've decided to blame these two guys for the team's lack of success the past couple of seasons.......instead of blaming Ron Wilson.....you know, the HEAD coach. Burke did make sure to put the responsibility of hiring these two coaches on Wilson's shoulders. He said that Wilson was the one who interviewed them and hired them. If things don't start working out this season, I think it'll finally be time for Wilson to get the boot (he has not been offered a contract extension yet).

So now the Leafs have an all-American GM and coaching staff! It's a conspiracy!;)

I want to share part of a quote from Doug Wilson

"****In reviewing how things went last season for the Sharks, Wilson offered a self-critique that he probably waited too long before making the player moves that got the Sharks back on track in mid-January.

“In my own mind, I shouldn’t have waited until Jan. 17,” he said of the transactions that added Ian White, Kyle Wellwood and Ben Eager to the lineup."

I read this quote this way-

"I screwed up and didnt fix it when I should have. Therefore, instead of me taking the fall, the crap storm will roll down hill and unless you are on our two top lines or are under the age of 33, you may not have a job".

I simply see this as him throwing others under the bus for his inaction.
