Yes, Moose is an option as a name. It is/was the name of the AHL team that this ownership group owns and played in Winnipeg until all of this happened. They were called the Manitoba Moose, and they're moving to St. John's, Newfoundland for next season (which is where the St. John's Maple Leafs played until the Leafs moved them to Toronto as the Marlies). From what I've heard/read, the ownership group has a lot of pressure on them to call the team the Jets. Whether it's the Winnipeg Jets or the Manitoba Jets remains to be seen.

I didn't catch the NHL awards laszzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Okay, I'm awake again. I did see on the news that Corey Perry was in Santa Monica today with the hardware he won last night posing for pictures in his Ducks sweater. I would have gone if I would have known. Why wasn't he posing for pics in Anaheim?

The Moose is a terrible name. Ranks right up there with Ducks, Predators, and Wild as my least favorite NHL names.

Because Santa Monica > Anaheim? ;)

Yeah, I thought the NHL Awards were a total snooze. I only planned to watch Timmy win the Vezina, but ended up watching most of it. I find Jay Mohr sooooo annoying.

yes to match their minor league team.

The awards show was lame. very unclassy if thats a word

It felt like some cheesy MTV movie awards/ESPY combo.

I don't mind the Moose, but prefer the Jets.

Santa Monica is definitely >>>> Anaheim. Going to hang out there this weekend, actually.

Just heard on TSN Radio that Chris Pronger is the Flyers new captain.

Someone in Philly emailed this to the show: if you think Richards partied too hard in Philly, wait until he get to Los Angeles.

Also, a name will be announced for the Winnipeg team prior to the draft or their pick.

^^^Very awesome news.

The Leafs got a solid defenseman today for the second round pick that the Leafs got from Boston in the Kaberle deal.

We got John-Michael Liles from the Avalanche, who is a a few years younger than Kaberle and puts up similar numbers.

So, in essence, we traded Kaberle for Boston's 1st rounder tonight, JM Liles, and Joe Colborne.

And it was announced today that Rick Dudley, the former Thrashers GM, is joining the Leafs front office.

Nice job Burkie.

cuestakid, it looks like you were right about the Smyth to Calgary rumors.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369870

Nope. Looks like he's heading back to Edmonton, as he wanted: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369870

Tambolini was just asked about it on TSN's draft coverage, but he wouldn't confirm at this time.

Hey, now that Gilbert Brule will be in Los Angeles, he has a better chance of hanging out with Bono.:p

cuestakid: what do you think about the Sharks' sign and trade of Setoguchi (and others) for Brent Burns?

Doesn't seem like Setoguchi expected it after he was signed yesterday by SJ to a new 3 year deal:
He said after reaching that deal that he couldn't be happier, calling San Jose the best place to play in the NHL.

I'm very happy with the moves the Leafs made today. We got two solid players in the first round of the draft at 22 (we traded our 30th and a 2nd rounder for 22) and 25. A RW and a D.

I'm pretty happy with Toronto's pick as well. Tyler Biggs looks like a good pick from what I've read about him. The Jets' pick though was certainly quite surprising. But now that the shock wore off, Mark Schleife looks like he'd be a good fit over there.

First off-who said Draft day would be boring-LOTS of excitement!!

While I know Burns wil help, I honestly think we overpaid-a solid goal scorer, a supposed top prospect (Based on what I have heard and read) AND a first rounder seems to me a lot to pay for to Burns- I know he is a great player but it just seems like too much.

I am not saying Seto wasn't expendable, but it seems odd that we literally just signed him to a 3 yr extension. Doug claims it was not our intent to trade him but I personally think its a dick move to sign someone and then two days later trade him.

I want to also mention a quote from Doug:
"We've been looking for a while to add defensemen. ... When this type of guy does become available, it comes at a cost, and you don't want to fill one hole and create another. We feel we're a better hockey team today."

If that is the case I want to know who you are getting to fill the holes that you claim we don't have that we will until you show us your depth chart.

On a semi-related note, if the hawks can dump soupy, maybe we can dump Heater.

On Smyth-I figured he would end up there anyways-I dont think he could stomach wearing flame red.

Only reason they're able to dump soupy (nice nick:p) is because of who Florida's GM is: Dale Tallon. Who do you think signed him to that crazy deal in Chicago in the first place?

But hey, anything can happen. Maybe Heater would be willing to return to the scene of the crime in Atlanta.;)

It's too bad to see Smyth leave LA. I liked him as a King.

I actually forgot that Tallon was there..

I withdraw my statement-Tallon just wanted him back and the hawks likely said something to the effect of "You gave him the absurd deal-you want to absorb it, knock yourself out!"

Smyth to Edmonton is done. Instead of Brule, the Kings received Colin Fraser and a seventh round draft pick. Tthe Kings wanted to buy Brule out, but they aren't allowed to buy out an injured player.

Smyth should be able to provide some much needed leadership to the Oil. It's also refreshing to see a player actually want to go there, instead of wanting to leave.

thoughts on today's HHOF inductees?

All well deserving(though I am personally skeptical about Mark Howe but thats likely because I never saw him play). Am I right in that we have no builder (no Burns?)

They know that they ****ed up when they didn't name Burns last year before he died. I think they didn't want to name him this year because it'll look like they are correcting a mistake. They should have though. Not nice.

All are deserving, but there are a number of players that were eligible prior to this year that haven't been elected yet simply because more popular players become eligible as the years go by. I mean, why is Brett Hull in the HHOF and Adam Oates isn't? Pavel Bure? Eric Lindros? Dave Andreychuk? I really don't understand why they have this 4 person number. Why can't they elect more if more are deserving? Why can't it be less?

Regarding Mark Howe, just look at his stats: 742 points in 929 games is pretty impressive, especially for a defenseman. That doesn't even take into account his time in the WHA (504 points in 208 games).

I'm so happy to see Dougie get elected. My greatest memories of watching the Leafs are from when he was on the team. I'll have to see if I can dig up my Gilmour sweater!

Don Cherry talks about Gilmour and then rips Melrose back in 1993 haha

Surely
What do ya think, Stamkos in Philly...:D;)

If the Flyers try to go the offer sheet route, TB will match it. They've let it be known that they will match any offer. Plus, the first round picks that TB would get from the Flyers if they don't match the offer sheet would be somewhere in the 20's, so they wouldn't be happy with that. If a team like Florida or Edmonton did it, I'd bet they'd consider it a little because chances are the 1st round picks would be quite high. I doubt either of those teams will finish very high in the standings next season.

I'll kill myself if Stamkos becomes a Flyer.;)

The Leafs are also in on this........

I won't. we already beat all of them anyways. :D :D :D

They should put him on a line with Jeff Carter.. or Mike Richards. OH WAIT.

what the hell were they thinking with those trades? get rid of your two best players for a small chance at stamkos?

I don't think TB is gonna let Stamkos get away.

Interesting. Geez. Having Liles and Kaberle would be pretty amazing, methinks. I don't really know if I want Kabs back though!

That's all just speculation by that blogger. Dreger doesn't mention the Leafs at all in his blog. The blogger you linked to drew his own conclusions.

I noticed that -- but I saw several people reference this, not just this one. I'll see if I can dig the others. I wonder if there was an article taken down or something...

I really don't think Kaberle will go back to Toronto-they went through a lot to get rid of him-plus why would he go from having a chance at another ring.

Tampa Bay will match every single offer sheet Stamkos gets-period-if they have to blow up the piggy bank to do it they will-he is too important to their franchise. If they have to make everyone on the roster take pay cuts, they will.

I read somewhere recently (and may have posted it here) that Lombardi was not worried about offer sheets to Doughty, who as far as I know has not been re-signed and will become a RFA in 48 hrs. If he hits open market, the Kings will be in a very dangerous place-he deserves top dollar but for a team like them, they cannot give everything to one guy-they have to have money left over to convince guys like Stoll and Oscar Mollar to stay.
