^^^I'm just generally unimpressed with how Sather does business. But, yeah, the NHL needs a strong NY team.

Leafs made an interesting deal today with Nashville. We acquired defenceman Cody Franson and center Matthew Lombardi from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenceman Brett Lebda and forward Robert Slaney.

Even if Lombardi isn't able to play ever again (he miss all but 2 games last season due to concussion), we still win the trade because of Franson. He had 8 goals and 21 assists, and was a +10. And he's only 23.

Our defense is looking really good with the additions of Liles and Franson.

If Lombardi is able to play again, it's just a bonus. 53 points in 2009/10.

I will not miss Lebda at all, and Slaney isn't exactly tearing up the minors.

Great job, Burkie.

Well, I was being a bit sarcastic, but thanks for the history lesson. :D

But really, wow. We can't be excited because we signed a coveted free agent? Nobody said anything about a Stanley Cup. Did we overpay him? Probably. Sign him for too many years? Yes. But we have something to look forward to next season. And hopefully we'll add a few more of the pieces we need to get us further than the first round next season.

Man, so much hate for NY. :(

I probably phrased that wrong.. might have been drunk. I'm not saying you can't be excited.. it's just crazy when the NY media is going to start calling them Stanley cup contenders just cause of one player. it is gonna take more than that to win. they do have some good pieces in place so far though

You overestimate the NY Media when it comes to the NHL. Especially if football starts on time this year. The Jets and the Giants will be playing and *hopefully* the Yankees will be in the playoffs. They'll get some hype, especially if they add another player or 2, but definitely not what you are thinking. The signing of Richards didn't even make the back cover of the papers today.

Here is my theory on what happened:

If we look at everyone who we have let go this summer(eager, mayers, setogouchi, wallin, huskins, white and now heatley) all were pretty much ineffective during the playoffs (setogouchi could be the exception but he didn't have such a great regular season either). Wilson has decided that anyone who cannot pull their own weight during the playoffs is of no use and will be replaced with someone who can.

We also have been quite unhappy with Heatley's performance as a whole, and many people (myself included) were calling for his head after this year and how he basically did nothing during the playoffs. Many fans seemed to be coming around to the idea that we are overpaying him and need to get rid of him but most of us doubted we could find someone to take him.

I am quite happy with the trade-though I am less happy that a conference rival now has what were two of our top forwards

Surely
There's a major rumor floating around Philly that the Flyers are still in the mix for Stamkos;)

Funny, cause one of the headlines on ESPN NHL right now is "Rumors: Stamkos, Lightning close in on deal"

There's no way in **** Tampa is letting Stamkos get away. They might as well pack their bags and move to Quebec City or something if that happens.

The rumors that I've read in the past couple of days is that both the Leafs AND the Flyers are the top two teams who would land Stamkos if Yzerman is unable to sign him.

The latest is that the Lightning might be close to signing a deal with him, but it would probably be a short term deal:

Looks like Kabs won't be the Bruins' or the Leafs' problem.

He's decided to follow in his brother's footsteps and signed a 3 year deal with the Hurricanes.

A really good signing by the Canes, actually. $4.25/year is fair for Kabs.

And good, the Leafs re-signed Clarke MacArthur to a two year deal. Seven more minutes, and it would have gone to arbitration. Phew.

Surely-I respect you and your opinions as much as anyone here, but please do not disrespect the intelligent and "usually" reasonable statements we all make by quoting a man who tomorrow will write than Stamkos wil head to Pittsburgh with Ovie..

The only reason the flyers would get involved would be to drive up the price to force Tampa to give him and force them to clear salary.

lol....I know, Ekland is a douche. The only reason I linked to there was because it was the first place I saw that rumor. They've talked about how the Leafs/Flyers are the frontrunners if the Lightning can't/won't sign him on both the FAN590 and TSN Radio. I believe I read it elsewhere as well.

The Leafs have the cap room. The only reason I don't see us signing Stamkos to an offer sheet is because Burke has loudly spoken out against that practice. He would have lots of 'splaining to do if he went against his principles.

This could get really ugly for everyone-when Dean is mad he is not afraid to let the world know.

I wonder if the league nullify this trade, even though Smyth has been introduced and all parties have moved to their respective cities?

I bet the Kings could get a couple of picks out of this (which, based on the short term outlook of the Oilers, more valuable than any player the Oilers could put up).

My guess is the Kings will be further compensated if the league finds that the Oilers weren't being honest about Fraser's health. No way the trade will be reversed.

Holy crap, lookit this doucher walking along the boardwalk in Venice Beach:
