Those "13" national championships are a joke. One of those was 1941, when Bama finished 3rd in their own conference, and lost to us (Mississippi State) and Vandy. They finished 20th in the AP poll.

Precisely why I'm opposed to any kind of playoff more than what we already have; a "championship" game between #7 and #8 will never be as anticipated or as validated as a game between #1 and #2, and the current system gives us that.

A while back, one of the MSU message boards started joking about that, since we beat them that year. They had some shirts printed up that declared MSU the national champs in 1941, since we had a better record and had beaten the so-called national champs head to head.

Oh brother, sounds like some other schools I know of. ;)

I have to disagree with this. There have been a lot of great Super Bowls that didn't feature the teams with the best records, and at least in the NFL those records and division championships aren't quite as arbitrary as they are in college.

Just look at last year's games. How much better/more exciting would it have been if this had happened instead of what did (seeds based on BCS rank)?

Round 1
1. Alabama vs 8. Ohio State
4. TCU vs. 5. Florida
3. Cincinnati vs 6. Boise St.
2. Texas vs. 7. Oregon

Round 2
1. Alabama vs 5. Florida
2. Texas vs. 6. Boise St.

Championship
1. Alabama vs 6. Boise St.

Even if you went by conference champion (thus eliminating Florida in favor of Georgia Tech), you might have gotten to the same place, but the ride would have been so much better.

One of many reasons I don't watch the NFL. A team with an 8-8 record can go to the playoffs - why bother even playing the season, in that case?

1. I wouldn't have been any more interested.

2. I would have been much less interested in the championship game, since it didn't feature the best teams.

3. I almost wouldn't have been interested in the regular season, since it would have meant much less.

I know I'm in the minority, but I like that our current system places as much importance as it does on each regular season game. I like that only the two best teams get to play for the championship. A playoff, either in the incarnation you listed or in any other, just doesn't interest me as much if it goes beyond the top two teams.

I'm a believer in the bowl system. It gives schools not in the title hunt a chance at more exposure, practice, and money and gives fans another game to enjoy. However, I believe something resembling a playoff can be worked into the bowl system.

And the shirts were all in fun. The attitude was basically was if Alabama can retroactively claim national titles, why can't we? I thought it was funny.

Roll Tide~!!!

But then again I am not your average Bama fan. I agree there needs to be some cleaning up when it comes to some of those "national championships".

Roll Tide.

One of my best friends is an Alabama fan. He's one of the civilized ones, like you seem to be. We get along wonderfully except for one week a year. Of course, he keeps reminding me that Bama doesn't consider us a rival. Which is mostly true. Except for when we beat them Saban's first year, and he put up material in the locker room saying beating MSU was one of his top priorities. :)

I'm also guessing you don't look like this.

LOL... Ahhhh no. Don't look like that....

Looks like he just came from a sado-masochistic dungeon :p
Where are the whips and chains that go with that outfit?

Well, he's so vicious and mean that we had to go hard core to hold him back. We had to attach a logging chain to restrain him. :D

Actually, I kind of like this one better. The look on his face is great.

Point very well taken, but I think it's pretty clear that would never happen in an 8-team college football national championship playoff. Under what scenario can you ever envision where their aren't at least four teams worthy of title consideration? Last year there were five going into the bowls (including Cincy, whose coach almost certainly would not have left before the playoffs). Were they all good enough to win the national title? Clearly not, but a playoff would only give that title to one of them.

1. I wouldn't have been any more interested.

2. I would have been much less interested in the championship game, since it didn't feature the best teams.

3. I almost wouldn't have been interested in the regular season, since it would have meant much less.

So you're telling me that you would have been less interested in the TCU-Boise Fiesta Bowl, even if it meant that the winner of that game would play for the national title? Or what about the Rose Bowl? Terrible, boring game, but if it had any sort of implication, it would have been much more entertaining.

Or what about two years ago? What if OU had been the one left out of the Big 12 Championship (and thus the national "championship") because of a rules quirk? Would you really be disinterested in their bowl game, even if it meant that winning gave them a deserved shot at the national title?

No offense to MSU or UGA, but bulldogs are fugly! I'll take this any day...;)

You're focusing on the wrong side of my argument. The games themselves, in terms of the matchups, wouldn't be any more or less interesting to me.

I'm talking about the aspect of awarding a championship to the best team in football. The TCU-BSU Fiesta Bowl from last year certainly intrigued me as far as matchups go; but as a National Championship? No. Neither team went in as one of the two best teams in football in terms of our accepted ranking systems, so to me it actually lessens the prestige of a "Championship" to be awarded to such a team.

Last year we had the top 10 teams take all 10 BCS bowl slots, which was fantastic in terms of getting good games; but I think to have awarded the National Championship to any team other than Alabama or Texas would have cheapened the very notion of a National Championship.

Ha!

To each his own, I guess. But if there was a playoff (or even a plus-one), and Boise had beaten TCU and Alabama/Texas (or both of them), not even you could argue that they weren't a true national champion.

The cream rises to the top. Look at baseball or basketball. For every Fresno State (baseball) or Butler (hoops) Cinderella that "doesn't deserve" to be in the mix, there are tons of traditional powers winning championships. Football is the only sport where we are "afraid" to crown a true national champion.
