The problem is it is an indication of a possible problem. While Mullen got a nice, fat raise, word going around is that the assistants got short-changed on their raises. If so, this is a big problem, since good assistants are just as important as the head coach. (See Florida in the past couple of years)

If true, I blame Mullen. He should have asked for more money for his coaches, and of there wasn't any extra to be had, he should have taken a smaller raise to free up some cash for his guys.

The real issue, though, is probably just that Miss St can't compete financially with UT-Austin. Not really that big an issue because no one can. Be patient. If Mullen is the guy you want running your program for years to come, he'll find a good group of assistants and get them paid.

Well, Kirby Smart got a raise at Bama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama has given defensive coordinator Kirby Smart a $100,000 raise and one-year contract extension.

Smart will make $850,000 annually through Feb. 28, 2014 under the new deal approved Wednesday by the university system's board of trustees compensation committee.

Smart had his salary more than doubled last year after winning the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach and helping the Crimson Tide to a national title.

He won't have to pay a buyout to leave Alabama for a head coaching position. Smart would owe the university $72,000 if he takes a job another job as an assistant.

The compensation committee also voted to raise the salary of strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran. Cochran will make $290,000 this year and $320,000 in 2012.

I dunno, like I said, it's just a rumor. Diaz gave an interview to one of the beat reporters and said Texas called him Monday, and he didn't go seeking another job. He said he was happy in Starkville, but Texas was one of the two or three jobs he would leave for. He was making $260k with us, and the Texas job is rumored to be $750k, so I can't blame him there.

I think we will promoted from within. Chris Wilson, who was at OU as the D-Line coach, was technically our "Co-Defensive coordinator", which I always found odd. Odds are he will be bumped to solo coordinator.

Andrew Luck is returning to Stanford for the 2011 season. Start engraving his name on the Heisman? If not that, then that should make it just a bit easier to attract a new head coach if Harbaugh is off to the NFL for crazy money.

Will be difficult to duplicate this season, especially with a new coach (if indeed there is one)

A couple of coaching notes...it looks like Pat Fitzgerald is the latest to spurn Michigan, electing instead to stay at his Alma mater. Also, it's being reported that Dennis Franchione has been hired as the new coach at Texas State (formerly Southwest Texas State) where he coached back in 1990 or so, before moving on to New Mexico, TCU, Alabama, and finally Texas A&M (where he failed spectacularly). The Bobcats are moving up to Division I-A in 2012 and joining the WAC.

Chris Mortenson of ESPN just tweeted this

LATEST ESPN UPDATE: After meeting w Harbaugh, source says Dolphins have decided that Tony Sparano is the best man for job. Will be retained.

Looks like Harbaugh won't be going to Miami

I think it's becoming more and more likely that he'll stay at Stanford.

If he really turned down that truckload of money from Miami, then he wants to stay in the Bay Area - and that means either move to the 49ers or stay at Stanford. His wife just gave birth and I'm sure moving across country at this time is not their preferred choice.

Supposedly Stanford made an offer that exceeded the Niners' initial offer to him. Throwing money at sports coaches is definitely not a Stanford thing to do: their former AD once infamously proclaimed "We are not Nebraska". Well, maybe they are now - or perhaps they're better. :D

I have my doubts about Harbaugh's attributes to succeed in the NFL. He's got everything you need to succeed at the college level, but I don't think his motivational philosophies will work very well on spoiled, overpaid NFL players.

TCU billboards appear in Columbus, Ohio. [ESPN]

I saw that story yesterday. You beat me to posting it.

Check out this article on just how much influence Phil Knight has at Oregon. It's scary, since this is about the same level of control Lowder has at Auburn, and he is in trouble (see the article I posted a while back about all that). I'm surprised the NCAA hasn't come calling yet. Yeah, they may not be doing anything wrong, but stuff like this is usually enough to get their attention.

Harbaugh to the 49ers

Closer to home than Miami and an easier conference
Doesn't have to play the Pats and Jets twice a year

Bah! You beat me to it! I was just about to post this.

As a 49ers fan, I really hope he is as successful in the NFL as he has been at the college level. The real problem with the Niners, though, is at the top. They need new ownership and management. I miss Eddie DeBartlo and Carmen Policy.

Not a good year for the Dawgs period...

UGA VIII has lymphoma, is responding well to treatment

^^^ awwww! I keep telling my wife that one day we're gonna get a Bulldog.

I think LSU is gonna roll A&M, but I'm rooting for the Ags.

LSU has no QB
and I think they are overrated

Not sure how good A&M really is either though
Might be a good game if A&M has enough speed to hang with them

Edit: Nice start for the Aggies

I hope I'm wrong - it'd be nice to see them win. My attitude is probably a byproduct of preconceived notions of the SEC more than anything based in fact.

A&M draws first blood!

I'm just hoping for a close game at the end so the Mad Hatter can make a fool out of himself yet again :)

Edit: 10-0 Aggies already, may not be close at all
Which team did you say was gonna roll?

This may turn out to be a slugfest. I'm not sure attempting that field goal was the best idea ever. Gave them too short of a field, and in their previous possessions LSU was going down the field with ease.

EDIT:
Aggies all the way.

Geaux Tigers

Coming from a Gator fan, that sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard :D

Edit:

LOL
Where did all of that Tiger offense come from??

Sure sounds like Miles is going to Michigan this time
I really believe he was going last time but the news got leaked and put him in a bind before the bowl game

Edit 2:

Texas Tech on two years probation

Tommy Tuberville, who replaced Leach, noted in a statement that the violations occurred before he arrived. He added that the program is "glad to have this behind us."

Doesn't look like much of a hit for the program
Self reported and no real sanctions

This was the institution's third major infractions case. In 1998, the school was placed on four years' probation for rules violations tied to academic fraud and using ineligible athletes. In 1987, the university was put on a year's probation for violating recruiting rules, including cash offers to athletes.

Texas Tech discovered the latest violations in February 2009, conducted its own investigation and imposed a series of sanctions that were endorsed by the committee.

The penalties on the football program included the loss of a football scholarship from its overall total of 85.
