The Thunderbolt is not marketed or intended to compete with a consumer who is buying a Dell home desktop, or willing to only pay $300 for a monitor (to play video games or check email).

The inverse may actually be more true. Apple has steadily gained share from the professional market who previously used NEC MultiSync, EIZO or Coloredge displays.

You have no evidence of that, while we know that most customers who are happily buying Macbooks and Mac Minis are just as happily giving $200-$500 to someone else for smaller monitors. This is a missed opportunity for Apple no matter how you look at it.

If there is going to be a retina iMac it will be just like the Rmbp. A special version that's more expensive. It seems that the world really isn't ready for retina, but that's never stopped Apple before. They push on and force the issue no matter how painful it is for a certain period of time for the adaptors.

Personally I think this is going to be one of the the greatest iMac iterations ever! I think we are going to see a design classic come our way - a new screen enclosure, a teardrop shape, the dropping of the superdrive. This will be a big update for sure.

27" iMac -change anything and it jumps up to 2-3 weeks (UK). Does not seem normal to me.

Yeah, was doing a 21" model.

Sounds good to me :D

Yeah, will 100% be an optional upgrade like the rMBP.

Would love if it looked like a Thunderbolt Display.. they are lovely to look at.

Do you guys think we'll see a chin or not? Would you rather a chin with a small depth iMac, or the same depth iMac with no chin?

Would rip your hands off if that design was offered to me tomorrow.

With both internally in the iMac? How easy is it to partition where things are stored, if I'm editing a project on final cut pro x, how will I know if it's being saved on the SSD or the HDD?

Generally you'll create a symbolic link ("shortcut" in Windows terms) from an area in your User directory on the SSD to the HDD. Look around, there are all kinds of guides & strategies on the best way to set it up. Some people just put their whole home directory on the HDD and link it over; depends on the use case. I think I'd prefer something like "~/Documents/More" pointing to the HDD.

Yep. Some people are still sensitive about ODDs but I think the majority of the people don't miss them and have external ones for emergency or disc burning like me.
It's always a pain with Apple when they revolutionize certain aspects of computing but in the end it's usually for the best. I'll be sticking with classic desktop for a while and jump into the future of retina displays, cloud computing/storage when I'm able to.
Also I'm quite surprised how conservative Apple actually is. You still have some sort of support for legacy I/O via thunderbolt adapters. Remember ADB? They completely abandoned it, ADC display ports that can be driven only with expensive adapters nowadays, going Intel and losing support for PowerPC.
I wasn't there when OS X was introduced but I heard that people were really upset in the beginning with it and lots of customers stayed on OS9 for a while, refusing to let go.

Yes, I would strongly advise against putting one’s home directory on a mechanical hard drive. The home directory contains more than just what you see. The hidden Library folder has a multitude of files that are frequently used by your apps, such as settings and caches.

Putting it on a relatively slow hard drive negates most of the point of getting an SSD in the first place. It’s best to just use symbolic links, or aliases, and move certain directories over, such as Movies and Music.

The ODD in my MacBook Pro died last year in december. Back then i said to myself i will repair it if i need it. Long story short, it's now almost a year since i have no (working) ODD because i had no situation where i needed one. But i still hope they don't drop it in the next iMac.

And to the people saying Apple could use the space for something else:
Remember, it's Apple. If they remove the ODD they would not try to use the space to make the iMac more powerful or even use Desktop GPUs. They would make it thinner and then praise it as revolutionary. Don't believe me? Look at the iPod touch, they removed the light sensor because they made it too thin.

Not entirely accurate (Apple only being able to make products thinner by removing features) but i agree in this case, if they remove the ODD it will only be to make the iMac thinner.

For what it's worth, i can't remember the last time i used a CD. Actually, it was probably to install Windows.

I used to go that route, back in the 10.4 days, on a firewire drive, so that I could hook my home directory up to 2 different macs... then the drive was killed permanently when it disconnected during writing of final cut render files... lost a lot of data (pre time machine) and decided I didn't want that much action going on with an external, at least not with firewire. I've had 2 different external usb drives stop working since then, but those were backup drives, and I had backups of the backups, so it wasn't an issue. I'd like to know the stability of thunderbolt and usb 3 drives, but I think maybe I just have bad luck with externals.

I would not use a mix of internal and external drives with live symbolic links or aliases. I do use TB externals for FCP X though, but again, everything related to the project is on the external only, which in itself is running in RAID 5.

The original question was around a computer with an internal SSD and an internal HDD.

but I think maybe I just have bad luck with externals.

I'd say that you've been unlucky. I've had plenty of externals and never had a problem with any of them. A few of them I've lugged around with me all over the place and they still work! I got externals sitting at 10 years that still work! Well the last time I check anyway...

Apple workers are still working

Midnight Monday here in Australia
and just took a walk past the Apple store
light ablaze and everyone seems to be working inside
all the front windows are covered so can not see inside

Remember with the release of the iPhone 5 Australia and NZ where open for selling, way before the USA, even Woznick flew to Australia to be one of the first owners

Maybe its just a big clean up
But I feel something is happening

so at 9am in the morning I may be here with my brand new IMac
or maybe a shopping bag full of toilet rolls
who knows

Post a picture of the window!

just seems odd that they are already preparing something before the event, they can't possibly have new stuff around before any new announcements and its still a day to go in the US

On a number of occasions products have been in the stores here, covered with large cloths so you can not see them, to be uncovered
It may only be advertising show boards

Apple love a great mystery, and the Australia press just lap it up.
Free publicity is one of the reason Apple is now king of the hill

All I know what ever it is, its taking up a lot of room, and I don't think there will be that many mini ipods in all the apple stores on first release

But as I said you could be right
1000 boxes of toilet paper
for the people who have the sh..ts when there is no new Imac

Just saying what I see, my x ray vision stopped when I sold my 2 GS

No off to dream land and tomorrow will be another day

On a more positive take and for all those patient long time waiters, we could also rephrase the thing to something like ...

The imacs?
Don't drop tears
Cause yeah they'll be coming
Better than your girl
Shiny, new, and all stunning
They'll blow you off the spot
Make you feel good
(And your girl nice, wet and hot)

Kind of a nice side effect
Of gigs of space
The fastest pace
Better leave without a trace
And get ready to embrace

Next Tuesday's truth
Now is the time to get loose
And don't let those ghosts of the past get you haunted
It'll be more than you ever wanted ...

Maybe better than YOUR girl he he... sorry, no electronic gadget is hotter than my wife lol... but nice little nursery rhyme.

Maybe 9am on Wednesday morning, but not 9am on Tuesday morning. The iPad mini event is not until Tuesday morning US/Wednesday morning Aus, and I doubt new products will be available until after it . . .

Why isn't there more chatter about new iMacs? The educational theme might be a good thing, but not as reassuring as I had hoped. God lord please help us in this hour or 1st. world need.

Im hoping that we hear of some solid rumor that says the iMacs will be introduced tommorow. The education theme may not be a bad thing as all the products rumored to be introduced at the event can be used for education.

Random thoughts.

I figured that the iTunes update would be a great segue into the new iMac...

What if the screen lamination issues were really preparations of Apple switching screen suppliers? If Samsung provided screens that is...

What if C A T really spelled dog.
