Im prolly one of those who got really and thoroughly ****ed by this update. A research grant was supposed to pay for this iMac, and it would have paid the hi27" model. However... the grant runs out in december, and it only grants purchase through one certain retailer who gets hardware a bit later than everybody else, and I guess that counts double for a low stock Apple machine.

This means, that after all this waiting, I was pushed into buying a base 15" macbook Pro.

Anyone feel like waiting for haswell with me ? Im guessint it will be announced in 2017, launched in 2019.

ODD is a dead format. Move on.

And not having a WIRED keyboard? Really? That's an issue? I'm sure you can easily swap that with a wired one if you ask. Gees, some of you guys will complain about anything.

I believe harkr100 described valid concerns, even though they have some remedies, and those concerns do not seem too grand in the scheme of things. In the end, I wouldn't poo poo what he expressed as unimportant.

Lots of people know, but they won't be posting that information in a forum like macrumors.com.

Spoke to an apple reseller today. He is expecting stock of 21" 3rd week of November.

----------

i feel your pain brother. I too think that the fusion might be risky in terms of its effectiveness. I really wanted a SSD for everything but the 768gb ssd option I think will cost as much as 700-800 pounds as BTO, which is INSANE! Did you ever consider maybe the mac mini you could max it out with an ssd 500gb 16gb ram and quad core i7?

I'd say give your daughter an ipad 2 and say its a 4 she'll prob not know the difference.

OR

If your daughter is in school get an educational discount and buy everything you'll prob save hundreds!
I priced up a Mac Mini today online. Trouble is by the time you add the ACD it's not any cheaper. Thinking more about 2011 refurb if I can get the right price.

Trust me she would know!
She's only 11 so I don't think she would qualify for educational discount would she?

I wonder what that means for availability directly from Apple?

Well the same reseller thinks his stock of Mac Minis is arriving by the end of next week, so I would say by the middle of November for iMac standard configuration in apple store.

FYI, for those who want to max out performance and speed, fusion isn't for you. Fusion is a price compromise that gets you there with a combination of off-the-shelf components and software synthesis. A max straight SSD and a thunderbolt HDD RAID gives you the perf+speed configuration. A bit pricier but that's the trade-off.

Looking at the difference between the two, I'm now seriously considering a 27 over the 21, been saving since jan so cost isn't an issue building a monster mac, trouble is I'll need a new desk. Anyone from the uk got any recommendations on places to look for a suitable one? Ive got a nice corner in mind measuring just over 1m x 2m. Ta very muchly.

Shane I looked so hard for a suitable desk for my planned 27" in the UK and I found nothing suitable for the size and weight. Now that the new version is lighter, it might be easier. However, in my case I had to give up and have a corner desk custom built!

You could buy a dell 27 ultra sharp for 400.

Trust me she would know!

Kids nowadays huh! I thought you did get a discount for schools. Not totally sure. If you know any students tho could be a good look.

I've had my fill of Dell! Not had good experiences with them in past.
I'm 38 so don't know too many students these days. I guess I could pop down the local college and hire one for the afternoon! What sort of discount do they get?

How do you know that, Mike? It doesn't seem that there is enough info to arrive at your conclusion. Also, at the conference, Apple had given a visualization that it anticipates the performance of the fusion drive to pretty close to having a straight ssd. Am I too gullible concerning Apple's representations, or put another way, do we have a reason to doubt Apple's representations regarding anticipated performance? I cannot see them exaggerating regarding something like that bc people would end up calling them on it, and they would not want th at kind of publicity. Usually, with performance specs, apple does not exaggerate in a way that would make them look bad at a later date.

To be fair, he's technically correct. It looks like Fusion is about 5-10% slower for about 60-70% lower cost for the same capacity. It IS a compromise.. but a perfectly reasonable one.

Yep, great point.

Does anyone know it the fusion drive for the 21.5" is only available with the slower rpm? Or can you only get the 7200rpm fusion in the 27"? My monitor now is a 23" 1920x1200 currently, so I'm really torn as to which size to get. I'm afraid 27" will just be too in my face huge. I was hoping they were going to come out with a 24" mid-tier.

Random question here. I'm about to order my refurb, but I've heard a lot of people talk about Apple upgrading their orders for free somehow. Is this just a random thing Apple does, or is there a super secret special code to tell the phone sales rep? I was looking more or less into the 3.1GHz i5, but now I'm leaning towards the 3.4GHz i7 since I might as well get the most bang for my buck if its already "outdated".

Thanks for the reply, sounds like I'll be hunting down a carpenter in the very near future then! How much did you end up paying for that if you don't mind me asking? I'd like a nice black/dark desk to match my other furniture and make everything on it stand out more.

It's random. Sometimes they have a model listed as the 3.1GHz i5 but it was actually BTO to 3.4GHz i7 by the original customer. So the refurb buyer gets a super bonus buy.

Damn. That'd be pretty awesome, but I dont know if I want to take the gamble haha.

I'm biting my nails waiting for December now, but I've got one small issue... I was planning on finally also buying a cinema/thunderbolt display to go with it, but unless they do a silent update on it next month to match the iMac's laminated screen, I don't think I want to spend $999 on one. I don't see any reason it shouldn't look exactly like the iMac, except of course without the chin and without the big bump in the back.

You get 15 percent I think its equates to over 300 I'd say!

Does anyone know when CTO-option-prices will be available?

What do you think, how much is (for the big 27"):
- i7 option?
- fusion 1TB option?
- GTX680mx option?
