The 2012 iMac does not seem to have an IR sensor for the Apple Remote.

Maybe the sensor is behind the screen, or behind the Apple? Is that possible?

Where is the IR sensor on the old IMAC?

I just looked at the technical specifications, and IR sensor does not appear to be listed.

I had thought that Apple shipped all of its latest devices with an IR sensor, then i noticed that probably, I was assuming too much, and it appears that my 2011 17 inch macbook pro may not have an IR sensor.

Maybe at this point they expect you to control your Mac with your iOS device that is always at hand... I've never had a use for the remote.

I used the apple remote with my 2010 MBP often it might have been removed in 2011 I'm not sure.

Make sense. can you control the volume of your computer with the remote app?

Well that was the end of this thread :(

Still undecided with this redesign, I'd like to see how they are managing the heat in this thing.

If I am to buy one. I would BTO a 27":

3.4GHz quad-core
Hopefully there is a 256GB or 512GB Flash option, because i dont want the fusion drive or 768GB (too expensive)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX

Otherwise, i might try the hackintosh route.

thats funny I never had a use for an iOS device. remote yes.

I just discovered that there is an IR sensor on the 2011 17" MBP. It is located on the right front corner, as a slot.

I looked at the 2011 IMAC manual, and it appears that the IR Sensor is located behind the Apple logo on the front.

I cannot determine from any of the information so far published about the IMAC 2012 if they had removed the IR Sensor from that model.

I have used the remote in ITunes for teaching dance and music. It comes in quite handy to pause and restart the music and control the volume during those kinds of situations...

Does anyone know when CTO-option-prices will be available?

What do you think, how much is (for the big 27"):
- i7 option?
- fusion 1TB option?
- GTX680mx option?

I would think that the i7 upgrade and the graphics card upgrade in the top of the line model would be consistent with the 2011 model, so that being said...
i7 option - $200
Graphics card upgrade (from 1GB card to 2 GB card) - $100

You can add the 1TB fusion drive to the current high end (non-server) mac mini and it costs $250, so I'd assume that will be the same as well since the upgrade will be the same (from 1TB HDD to 1TB Fusion Drive).

I'm waiting myself to see what the 3TB Fusion Drive looks like for cost. If it's more than $350 ($100 more than the 1 TB Fusion) I may just have to wait until they have a 2011 BTO with the 256GB flash drive and buy an external thunderbolt drive. I guess either way I wind up overpaying for something.

will we be able to order the 27" and get them before Christmas? I hope so or this is ridiculous and horrible planning on Apples part.

I'm also going 27", primarily because of the RAM self-upgradability disparity between 21" and 27". Have to say waiting to end-December will be hard...

Amen I decided I was buying an iMac in july 2011 but wanted to wait for a refresh.

Patience everyone.

The Question is:
When will November really start.
I'm just paying down my other bills while I wait. I will use my old systems till I can upgrade. Not having an optical drive on the new units, and still having the same basic price range tells me that we have a price increase with out increasing prices. How cool is that. My wife and I just need new equipment, so when it's available, I will order it. Then I will work on paying it off.
All the best to all of you. Enjoy your new MAC"s, when you get them.

I am also in the boat of trying to decide if I should update. Currently have a 27'' 2.8 GHz i7 with 8GB RAM, 2TB HD and the Radeon HD 4850. I bought it in 2/2010, so I still have AppleCare on it until end 2/2013. At this point, seems like its resale value will the highest I can get for it before it slowly drops down. Especially after the AC is expired. Just not sure how much extra performance I will see from the new iMac.

Is there any benchmark for the i7 (Lynnfield) against the i5 (Ivy Bridge)? I am assuming the big upgrade would be the new GPU vs the Radeon HD 4850 that is on my current iMac. In addition the other big upgrade is a SSD/Fusion Drive.

Anyone else thinking about upgrading from the 27'' 2.8 i7 to the new iMac?

Woah finally got access to some proper internet >.>"

Has there been any more info on fusion drives and the like?
Like if getting the 3tb+FD will have issues installing windows?(partition problems)
And on that note how will one install windows on the new iMac?

Glad to see the prices are up for them at least. :D

You got my hopes up then :(

Time to revive this thread. What is the bloomin date, ey?!

Good question, but I don't think there's any way to know, alas. What I would like to know though is when will the 21.5" be displayed in stores? Same day they go on sale for pre-order? Same day they start shipping? Not until both 21.5" and 27" are available? I'd really like to go check out the display in person before ordering. What is the historical precedence for release date/vs. ability to play with one in the store?
