Having owned a 2009 iMac and now using a 2011 iMac (both top-spec), I concur with those above me who note that the difference in overall performance is noticeable and tangible.
...

Sure, obviously a 2011 is going to be better and faster than a 2009, never meant to imply otherwise. Unless you have some very specific needs though it seems like the 2009 should be able to do anything that a 2011 can do (just somewhat slower, although I'd guess rarely more than 50% slower) and for me it wouldn't be worth the cost and inconvenience of updating.

My terms

I'm going to poop in a paper bag and mail to apple every tuesday until I can purchase a new iMac - @apple - you've been warned.

I own a 2009 Mac and I want to buy omnisphere a CPU raping synth. I don't think my 2.66ghz dual core imac has the Cardio Vascular for such tasks. It already taps out in Ableton with Big projects that really annoys me at times. Although there are work arounds. If I was browsing the internet I wouldn't even dream of an update. To be fair my mac works fine. And I got it free when my 2007 imac Hard drive died and they couldn't repair it. Apple Care Bonus!

Tbf I think most photo shop, video editors and music production enthusiasts just want an update to raise their game without having to do the hard work in improving their craft. I include myself in that statement.

I really should just stop checking for this update and get back to it! And so should you people (you know who you are)!

Hey Cook, while you're at your desk writing apology letters, maybe you could take a second longer to write one to your desktop customers, now that you've groveled at the feet of the enraged masses of iGadget consumers!

Who tend to be easy come, easy go whilst your desktop customers are very sticky. Demanding (of the very best, naturally) but very very sticky customers. Don't f*#% it up

Since we are just playing around here...

I know I've posted this at least twice over the past four months but I am REALLY starting to run out of faith now. Hoping to keep running my old mac until it arrives.

People shouldn't start taking bets on the iMac release until October 16. The iPhone 5 will get at least one month, uninterrupted spotlight. It has been like this for every release of the iPhone. And considering this is the biggest iPhone release yet, I'll be willing to bet the end of October.

People who are panicking or losing faith, need to take a step back and realize Apple's immediate agenda right now. Consider this for a second: they've just had the biggest consumer product launch in history. Right now they need to deal with it first. Everything else that isn't an iPhone is going to be on the back burner for now. Let the iPhone 5 release window ease up a bit first and then lets get ready for the iMac release.

So apple, bring on that new iMac for all the other users here on the forum!
Stop losing desktop clients. Soon when all the gadget collectors become angry about the lack of a decent iPhone, you will have not that much clients anymore.
Stock will never pass 800 bucks, this will be the top.

I'm in your boat, 2009 iMac 2.93 24" core 2 duo. According to Geekbench, I pull about a 4600 vs the New Retina MPB pros at 12k+, hopefully a new spec 2012 iMac will be at least that. Don't know how that translates on Aperture and FCXP but if its close to 2x or 3x, that's huge. Surely the USB3 is major for offloading the massive files I'm generating each job. My time machine backup is over 2TB and I am selectively excluding to keep it below 2TB.

I had to take it all into Apple this week for a problem related to the new Aperture 3.4 upgrade. 4 hour remedy to restore a critical 300gb library and reinstall. Great support. And they were packed with iPhone 5 customers too.

I am on pre order for the new Drobo 5 units that have SSD, plus 5 HDD bays plus TB and USB3.

I will benefit every which way from a spec update -- CPU, GPU, USB3, TB, SSD. I need it all!

Retina display is non-essential (i have the new iPad and thats great for portfolio and client meetings) but I will consider. If it launched without it, I will buy immediately.

iMac 2012 for $2000-2500;
New Drobo 5 at 15TB plus SSD for about $1800.
I'm ready to do my part for the economy!

I have been sorely tempted. Have priced it out about 20 times. But I would want a TB display. At that point the way I want it, it's a $4k investment. And I still need a big RAID. Patience. I am trying.

Okay now that 2 people have said it, may I know what 'distracting' really means here?

What i meant was white as an edge border often distracts the eye instead of making it easy to focus on what's on the screen - which is what black does. If you go into a tv shop and look at those tvs with a bright edge you'll see what great difference it makes compared to the blacks. Personally I think iMac is a too expensive device to make a fashion statement in white. But your concept looks great though! :) and apple has made a white iMac before. So I guess they disagree with what I think. So it could happen :D

I doubt we'll see anything this coming Tuesday :( no rumors and the iPhone still attracts a lot of attention. From 9th of October it's time to start being really inpatient.

Maybe they will WANT to provide a distraction to flagging iPhone 5 sales. If you haven't noticed first weekend sales of 5m unites fell below Wall Street expectations (6-10m unite) and in particular people are looking at the steepness of the growth curve outside the first 3 months and extrapolate that the tide has turned with iPhone. It will remain a 25-30% market share but it won't ever again dominate. Certainly wherever I look, I see Samsung GSIII adverts so the competition is fighting back.

At the end of the day NONE of us has a clue when they launch the new iMac. We are all wishfully thinking. Especially if there is an iPad-mini keynote in mid-Oct, I wouldn't imagine anyone at Apple is spending too much energy on desktops right now. Personally, I believe it will be a quiet, press-release launch (which means it could be any time, this Tuesday or the second Tuesday in November) and the changes will not be as dramatic as people wish them to.

You think they told all their iMac people to go take a vacation?

Don't worry, there are just as many people at Apple working on the iMac as ever. The fact that we haven't seen a refresh yet means that either they didn't think the new technology warranted it (Ivy Bridge is mostly valuable for its reduction in power consumption which doesn't make much difference for a desktop, and Apple probably isn't that impressed with USB 3 since Thunderbolt is twice as fast) or they are going to do a major overhaul and/or they are experiencing production problems with some new component. It isn't a conspiracy and frankly, the difference between waiting 501 days vs. 500 might seem like an eternity but it is actually not THAT long. This is sort of like small children waiting a couple more days for Christmas. Waiting until mid-October or even December should not make that big of a difference to adults.

I think you would regret buying a MBP at this point. Even if you could hook it up to a nice monitor. I thought about it myself very seriously for half a day. I think at the very least I want to wait for the imac to be released before making an educated decision.

You seem like a power user and power users I believe still need desktops, laptops are not quite there yet in terms of power I don't think.
