Maybe they will WANT to provide a distraction to flagging iPhone 5 sales. If you haven't noticed first weekend sales of 5m unites fell below Wall Street expectations (6-10m unite) and in particular people are looking at the steepness of the growth curve outside the first 3 months and extrapolate that the tide has turned with iPhone. It will remain a 25-30% market share but it won't ever again dominate. Certainly wherever I look, I see Samsung GSIII adverts so the competition is fighting back.

I wondered about that, then I saw a report that the difference between the predictions and the actuality was down to shipping time rather than lower sales. But, I don't think it will be 2nd. Or if it is, there won't be a big press launch. A) we haven't heard anything, no invites going out and B) if Apple have got a choice they won't get near the press so close to 'mapgate'. I can just imagine the first journalist question "So, Tim, cool new iMac, what about maps on the phone?"

I have been sorely tempted. Have priced it out about 20 times. But I would want a TB display. At that point the way I want it, it's a $4k investment. And I still need a big RAID. Patience. I am trying.

I think you would regret buying a MBP at this point. Even if you could hook it up to a nice monitor. I thought about it myself very seriously for half a day. I think at the very least I want to wait for the imac to be released before making an educated decision.

You seem like a power user and power users I believe still need desktops, laptops are not quite there yet in terms of power I don't think.[/QUOTE]

I couldn't wait anymore longer, if you need something, buy it. I know the release is imminent but like i said, i need it.
I like it, but i want to upgrade with a ssd in the future. Now i am back on track and for about 500 bucks you can find a decent monitor, maybe way better then the monitor of the imac. If i need an imac, i can buy one in the
future (or may be new mac pro). Now i have something decent and portable.
I think for myself that i made a good decision. If i want to work outside i can go outside. If there's to much noise, i can leave the place. One thing i miss about this macbook is a better resolution, but retina was not for me.

I pulled the trigger because there was a 400dollars (euro) discount.

Portability is nice on the one hand if you travel alot. But I would dread carrying something of such economical and sentimental value with me. It literally would be 5 years of my collected samples and sounds not to mention programs and unfinished projects etc...

By no means do I think buying a macpro is a mistake for sure it must be a very fast and capable machine. im sure you will enjoy it and wouldn't regret it. Its a beautiful thing to hook it up correctly to a nice big 27 inch monitor and have the best of both worlds. However I heard that they don't quite have a dock ready for the new mac pro's. I would want one that has all audio connections etc in one doc. (I could be taking out off my a$$ on that one.) Only did like 20 mins of research.

I could even get a significant discount by having my Mum pick me one up on holiday in FL. I live in the UK. But I just have to wait for this imac it would be rude not to.

Like all of you I have waited anxiously for the new iMac. I need both a laptop for my consulting business and a desktop to play with at home. I heard so much about the rmbp that I sold my mid 2011 iMac and ivy bridge laptop and purchased a rmbp and a Thunderbolt Display. However after using it for a while I realized that it still wasn't an iMac nor could it take the place of one so I took the TB back to BB and exchanged it for a 27" low end iMac. What a difference. Text seems clearer and I have the 1TB HDD to fill up. I also have till Nov 27th to return it if the 2012 iMac ever comes. My best guess is if it is coming, it won't be any later than the middle of October so that Apple can take advantage of the holiday sales. By the way, the only problem I had with the TB display was the stupid magsafe 2 adapter I had to use. I had to keep wiggling it to get a good connection. My advise for anyone waiting is not to get a laptop but keep waiting and if you really need an imac now, get one at BB and you have either 30 or 60 days to return it should a new one come out. In my opinion BB is the best place to buy an Apple computer ( i do not work for BB nor am I affiliated with them.

Why would you want to sell your mid 2011 iMac I have a 2010 iMac with 8gb of ram and its running great all apps and games I get from Mac App Store, although i would have hanged on to what you got and wait till the retina iMacs come out which I am doing sure a MacBook 15 inch retina looks great, so does the ipad but can you imagine a 27 retina display the only problem is software and websites to support it.

I sold my 2011 iMac because the money I received for both computers bought the rmbp plus some of the TB Display. At the time I thought that would be all I needed, but really missed the iMac. If I had the luxury of hindsight I would have kept the 2011 imac and just sold the laptop. However, getting the rmbp was my best computer decision. Once you see the screen, speed, and size of the rmbp you just can't go back to another laptop.

I own one so I can agree with you on speed it takes less than a minute to load up and shut down my iMac takes a minute unfortunately, the only thing I don't like with the MacBook retina is its harder and more costly to fix, I hope the iMac does not go that way yet.

What i meant was white as an edge border often distracts the eye instead of making it easy to focus on what's on the screen - which is what black does...

there is a reason why museums + art galleries have white walls; the white doesn't distract your eye from the artwork on the wall. I'd argue that - at least in my studio - that when in my peripheral vision, a white border would dissolve into the white-walled background + the image on screen would be more present. I'd imagine it would sort of "float." considering w/ a 27", the border would make a big difference. of course, YMMV - especially if have darker tonal values behind your imac.
I like the idea of a black or white border, and the ability to choose what's best for our working spaces.

I don't think it'd be late October because apple usually does their 3th earnig calls late October and that's the last thing apple usually does for the rest of the year

It's October or never (i.e., meaning next year)! Apple will not release products "before the year's end." Those statements are just plain stupid and make no sense. November marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Why on earth would Apple release new products (i.e., 2012 iMac, 13" rMBP, and iPad mini) after this time, and fail to take advantage of this lucrative time of the year. Surely they would release the remainder of their products before the "year's end," meaning sometime in October. Some thought processes around here clearly defy logic. If October passes without the release of the 2012 iMac, then you'll just have to kiss the 2012 iMac goodbye! Sorry folks!

There are two old but true sayings "Everything comes to he who waits" and "patience is a virtue". At the end of the day it will happen when it happens and on the plus side my 2011 iMac is still the latest model. I will only begin to worry if there's been no update by 2015.

Look on it as a form of personal development.

More powerful than a low specs iMac, maybe ... more powerful that a top specs iMac, no way ! My opinion, though ...

Well... It's a fact that the top end MBPs get higher processor scores than the top end iMacs currently. The top end GPU in the iMac is still slightly better than the top end GPU in the MBP, however.

Price to performance ratio and better GPU are the only thing that I see the iMacs winning in currently.

Went to the Paris (FR) Carousel du Louvre Apple Store this saturday. Was considering buying the current 27" iMac.
The Apple Genius I talked to told me he had no clue on anything but it would be wiser just to wait a little and see in October...

Even if they know, they will not tell you anything.

Well that comment is not selfish at all.. Yeah it's nice for you tell me about waiting for some of us who have been waiting since April computerless.

Just curious on the two displays as I am in the middle of deciding on iMac and Mac air or rmbp/Mbp and tb display

I thought the 27 inch Mac and the 27 tb cinema display (they are the same right meaning tb display ismthemcinema display) would be exactly the same but I see you say they are different. And the iMac display is different. Are they supposed to be the same.

Are you glad you bought the Mbp. Or now since you had to get the iMac anyway would you do it different.

Buy whatever you need the most, no one else knows more that you what you really want or need.

Of all the things I have read on here this guy has hit the nail on the head. There HAS to be a new one this year. I don't know why people are saying October or next year. There is no way they would skip a year, because apple want to take your money now in 2012 and want to take another load of money in 2013. If they released it in 2013 they would only only be taking your money once. Makes perfect sense, you don't need a business degree for that.

EVERYONE knows that those imac are old hat. Amazon says 2011 version newest version for petes sake. No way there gonna let 2012 go without giving it atleast a spec bump.

Everyone just needs to be patient. Its funny but I was reading an old post from this forum from like March 2011 and people swore down that they had been waiting ages for an update and that it was never coming. Then it was released in May 2011.

Don't get sucked into the Fear whirlwind its gonna drop soon!

I think you're probably right, but probably not for the reason you think.

Of course companies can release products in late November/early December and still catch most of the holiday shopping season. It's not like there's a magical drop-dead date of November 1 and nobody will buy a product for months if it isn't released by that date.

BUT ... thinking about it ... if iMac sales start ramping up at the beginning of November and Apple releases a refresh mid-November, then they will have a LOT of irate customers coming back to stores demanding exchanges, refunds, etc.

Looking at the MacRumors buyer's guide, it looks like Apple hasn't done a product refresh in November or December since at least 2005. I would guess probably for this reason.

storage size 2tb hdd plus 256gb in an imac clear winner over macbook pro size of 768gb mind you size not speed

If you are really going to be hammering the CPU/GPU then I would much rather have a desktop than a laptop. I'm sure Apple designs these devices to be able to run full-bore 24/7 but I feel much more comfortable doing it with the iMac's enormous heatsinks and fans vs. tiny laptop heatsinks and fans... plus I imagine the MacBook gets very loud too.

The imac display seems a little clearer to me plus it has more ports on the back. I love my rmbp and am glad I purchased it. Nothing comes close to the clarity of the screen and the speed. I just wasn't happy with the TB display, mostly because of the magsafe 2 adapter needing constant tweaking everytime I connected my rmbp to it. Glad I have both actually.
