Personally I would say that the iPad mini would get a separate launch event, with the iMac not likely to receive any event. Also the iMac will not be touchscreen for a long time. The mac desktops have the trackpad for touch inputs:)

The iPad mini and iMac 2012 each don't justify a full-on press conference, and as very different products don't justify one together.

But is there some unexpected twist that WOULD warrant a joint announcement?
Like a touchscreen iMac?

Hey, why not? Considering how many times I go from tapping on my iPad's screen when it's parked in the dock next to my other screens, to unthinkingly tapping on the PC screens with the disappointment of those not responding in kind, why not just add touch ability to the iMac? I'm not saying replace any input method, not saying require using it for any reason, just add another no-brainer no-impact user interface so if the user wants to touch a button on the screen he can.

Introducing that capability WOULD warrant a separate press conference, AND in a context where an iPad bump and iPad mini introduction would make perfect sense.

In hist last interview at AllthingsD Steve Jobs said they had tried out touch input for the desktop, and they found it to be irrelevant and not working.

Why are people so adament on this ? its... trisomia 21.

Also apple arent a company to add a feature without a CLEAR direction. They wont just add touch and not redo the entire OS in some shape or form.

After waiting for this iMac since November 2011 (I hoped it would come in january), I just opened a fortune cookie today and it said: "You have been patient for a long time now. Your patience soon pays!"

Thats the prove we all wanted. Its coming next week!

Back on topic guys! More speculation on release and less on fubar touchscreen which has ALREADY been put down :)!

----------

For additional data points, MacMall is completely out of stock and J&R has only low-end 21" (with Spanish keyboard) and low-end 27".

But again, this tells us new models should be arriving shortly, but doesn't exactly give us a date. Or a week.

Do you think big 3rd party resellers like those you meantion would be left with no inventory for more than 2 weeks ? Has this ever happened before ?

Like I said... it could be Apple (for the first time) has a made a huge overestimation of how long their stock would keep up, and arent actually ready to launch yet ^^

I'm really thinking 25th or later.

  • It will be after the back to school promo
  • After the day the iPhone launches (yes the stores will be busy from now until after Christmas with people trying to get an iPhone)
  • After iOS6
Would also work out nicely for Apple to feature the latest World of Warcraft expansion on the section of the iMac portion of the site that goes over graphical performance / gaming capabilities.

If not, tomorrow is a slim chance, and basically any Tuesday from tomorrow until 10/30 is a safe bet (unless within the next few weeks we learn of another Apple event schedule for some time in October).

Oh well. I will keep waiting along with everyone else.

I don't see anything with wrong with a touchscreen desktop. It probably wouldn't be meant for extended use anyway, and if so, the computer could change to a horizontal position, if necessary. I'm sure they've thought of this kind of stuff. They're not gonna just release a touchscreen computer and say I don't care if your arm gets tired, live with it. It would be nice also to have touchscreen as an option if you want to do one quick task, like check the weather or put your computer to sleep.

Anyway, if an iMac's coming this year, it's October or nothing. After that would be absurd for a 2012 release and any earlier would be a disservice to both the iPhone and iMac.

Personally I feel like this is a completely marketing driven decision in anticipation to Microsoft's massive Win8 release. I would be willing to bet they've got all the new products in production and getting ready to go and will wait until MS does their big event.

And honestly I'd do the same thing. Look at the opportunity: Metro is seriously pissing off windows power users. Metro is clearly aimed at the unwashed masses in an attempt to cut into iOS's pie. So you've now got all these people who are professional Windows users that are now seriously considering changing platforms, and the most "desktop-like" experience they are going to get is OSx and they can install Win7 easy as pie and run both.

Apple might capture a healthy exodus with a move like that.

Fascinating thoughts. Windows 8 was what finally pushed me over the edge to go back to the Mac.

Earlier someone posted an embarrassing episode where they ran out of 2001's in July '02 but the new ones weren't ready till Oct '02. Don't expect a repeat.

Why are people so adamant on this ?

Because I keep reaching for my PC screen.

I've got two monitors set up portrait orientation, with my iPad likewise in its stand right next to them. I tap away on the iPad, then look at the PC and reflexively start tapping buttons on the PC screen.

Yes, I know it's a far from ideal interface. The keyboard and mouse/touchpad are more efficient and usable. Yes, I'm aware of "gorilla arm" etc. In no way do I mean a touchscreen monitor, mounted vertically on a desk, would by any conception be a primary interface - but it's still a sensible interface when I find it sensible, unto instinctive, to just reach out and touch a virtual UI component.

Adding touchscreen capability would vanish into savings from other cost reductions (remember, Apple almost never reduces prices, just adds more capability), would have zero effect on size/volume/weight/etc., would further move toward OSX/iOS fusion, etc. If the capability is there and you don't want it, don't use it. If it's there and you find yourself reaching for the screen instead of searching for the mouse and wiggling it to find the cursor, you'll just touch a button and it will respond (instead of "aw, crap, confused iPad with iMac again...").

Sure, might not happen. Don't see why it shouldn't ever.
And it would nicely link iMac 2012 introduction with iPad mini introduction.

Not like there's anything else to discuss while we whine about "ok, THAT date flew by..."

I've been waiting months to buy a refreshed iMac. Now my current desktop is on the fritz, dropping its network connection every few minutes. Kind of annoyed with Apple. If they would just get on with it and do their refresh I could go out and get a new computer without feeling like I'm doing something stupid.

I've got an iMac7,1 at work and iMac8,1 at home. At work I've just bought the current MacPro 6 core with the 27" screen, I'll be buying a 27" iMac for home when it is released/refreshed next month. The smaller iMacs just don't have enough screen real-estate. Yes, a 20" or 21.5" display is better than a laptop - but 27" is great for anything work-related from word-processing to video...
(For work I actually tried to buy a Mac Mini but was eventually only allowed to get the hexa-Pro!)

back to the Ming-Chi Kuo sourced Appleheist image from Sept 14th...

As much as I would like the release to be soon I think this chart is the most realistic chance we have of a release. Early oct for the iMac and rmbp!

If it was today ...

I know it's not gonna be and I know it can sound stupid, so don't start attacking me for my post ... BUT if it was today (as I've learned that Apple loves to show its products on Tuesdays), is there an hour of the day when they usually launch them or is it just fate ?

I'd say in the morning, Cupertino... that would make it in the (late) afternoon for us. Magari...

It would normally be within the next hour or two. I don't think we will see them released today.

this wait is killing me! I hope some more concrete date rumors appear soon. :( :( :( Macrumors should remove the bad language filter at the iMac forum for a while, to et us release some frustration.

It's pretty pathetic that people have waited since the start of the year for an iMac update. I bet you won't even see one in 2012 then you would have wasted 12 months+. Why not just wait for the 2014 update?

You should buy an iMac when you want one and not let false rumours dictate when you make your purchase.

Everyone thinks differently about that.
From your point of view it's wrong to wait for others it's OK.
It's called opinion/point of view.
Why do people try to persuade others of their personal decisions?
