I think this thread is the most looked at thread on a discussion board for me in the past ten years.

I'm biting my nails waiting for some news, because I just REALLY don't want to pay full price for old hardware.

While it IS possible they will abandon the desktop, it's not likely, because of people like me that HAVE to have a Mac for iOS development, but also need screen real estate for design/photo work.

I COULD get a MBP + thunderbolt display, but honestly I can't justify that expense.

my answer:

This is what I'm hoping for... my old iMac can't take much more pressure

I think its what Cook want we to do.:(:apple:,
but at this stage would even better to take a quad mini for Osx work
and
microsoft machine for games .
This if Cook doesn't discontinue LED Cinema Displays too
making the useless TB (due to the non sense decisions of both Apple and Intel to
make thunderbolt crippled and expensive ) the only one available .
Would be soo good to see iMacs after 2009 with no Target display mode being opened
for non TB devices.
But you wanna force us to wait..and buy notebooks year after year...so ZERO CHANCES.

Seriously Apple's board..are you serious? All the point of strenght you have are
just killed by yourself? For what?Money? Are you serious?Do you know how many money
you could do it opening the Target Display mode?
Wanna exit desktops?ok..then :
1.Just say it ,
2.Set Free the Thunderbolt and make Gpu external docks happen or even better release the yours!

But..Apple..doesn't listen..the sad wallets left outside.
Wanna an Imac?Pick an Iphone 5 ,an Ipad and magnifyng lenses, one for 21 and one for 27.. .
Apple would sell the lens too because as it is now seems very deaf and blind.

I have bad news. I'm picking up my 2011 iMac tomorow, and seeing as I have a 2 weeks full refund period, the new macs won't be coming for another 2 weeks. I'm so sorry guys.

Uhh you always have 14 days refund even if you buy it one day before new release.

Teehee...

I think DKZ is saying that he has jinxed us by buying a 2011 iMac so we won't be seeing a 2012 for at least 2 weeks.

As another long time reader of this thread, just to say thanks for all chiming in with your ideas.

I guess we are all as frustrated waiting as each other...

In the US maybe, but not here in DK. I have 14 days because I ordered it over the internet. If you buy something in the store, it's yours for good as soon as you break the seal on that big beautiful box (unless of course the store says otherwise, which they don't).

To the rest of you, again, I'm really really sorry. :p

whatever works for you man.

so with so many of us waiting impatiently for this new iMac release, will there be a long wait to actually GET one once they are released?! I'll wait in line for it if I have to... I can't hold out for a new iPhone, iPod or iPad until the initial rush is over, but I want the new iMac on launch day :)

Kinda premature to get anxious about delivery dates when we don't even know if it will be released this year

Supply constraints can't be ruled out.

As long as it's released, I don't care if it takes a little while longer. It's the doubt about WHETHER it's coming out soon or not, or indeed at all, that's annoying for me!

----------

I was just noticing that Wikipedia lists a few devices that were released well into October, a few even in November, during the past few years. No idea how accurate this information is, but it's interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Macintosh_models

I believe he's implying that his personal storm cloud will prevent a new release from arriving until after his return period.

Ahhh gotcha. I'm just so straight and innocent sometimes. :)

It's not even 8am in California. Not many people working at all.

October 10th is about to end over here.

A laptop can be desktop replacement. For some though, it's a concern of price and aesthetics.

In my opinion, if you see yourself frequently needing a mobile workstation AND either don't want another machine or can't afford one then a Laptop is great. But if you rarely need the mobility, it's a waste of space and money. And if you REALLY need "mobility" then get a cheap 13" laptop for your mobile work and keep the desktop for your regular work.

Price
Laptops are great, but when you start to get into a solid "Desktop Replacement" territory the price goes up.

Aesthetics
For Macs especially, which have all of the cable-ports on the "side" things can get messy, especially if you want Ethernet and/or USB mouse+keyboard.

Power cord
Video cord
Ethernet
USB

All coming out different sides of a box in the middle of your desk. Some other PC manufacturers put a bunch of those on the BACK of the laptop so it's less annoying, and there are the (rare) cases of docking stations.

At least with a desktop you can hide the box under the desk and put some of those cables out of the way or they at least come out the back and are easily hidden.

And, of course, with an iMac you are removing some of those cables: video cord + video power cord.

what do you wish for the new iMac?

As if that meme hasn't been done to death on this forum.

Oh look! A dead horse! And a stick!

:D

1.5x pixel retina
USB3
No OOD
Laminated screen (reduced reflection)
8GB base RAM
1TB flash* storage option
Vertical sockets (facilitating wall mounting)
No "chin"

Nothing worth a media event for iMac alone, but certainly enough paired with another introduction/upgrade like the iPad mini.

(* - "Solid State Drive" has completely lost the meaning of "drive". Like "film" when referring to movies, I'm making a concerted effort to eradicate it from my vocabulary.)
