"One has to wonder if, realizing that there’s little to be done for the MacBook Pro until solid state economically reaches half a terabyte or more, and until “Pro” users can swallow the idea of giving up their optical drive fetish"

That made me laugh.

Hello, I'm too going to buy my first Mac with the new refresh.

Hello, I'm too going to buy my first Mac with the new refresh.

I was wondering if there is anything MacBook pro's are missing? I know basically nothing about computers and could someone explain if they are?

Thank you!

Nope. They are (almost) perfect. And the ports which are "missing",such as HDMI, can be adapted through the adapters Apple sells.

I am all done with MBPs. I have two ( One 2010 and one recent 2011 model ) and they are both purring like kittens. No need for a new one.

I like thin and all... but the air is just too thin for me. I'd rather keep the current form factor and just stuff a bigger battery in there.

My $.02

This. I'm all for there being the Air form factor, but the Pro is already thin enough. Keep the form factor the same, and any extra space cram in some more Li-Po. Ditch the ODD, add a blade SSD to boot from(64GB), a real GPU in the 13"(with additional fan), and then fill all the extra space with battery; the 13" should have 12+ real hours (and that's with the current chipset, even more with Ivy bridge and everything in).

The 13" is in definite need of a dedicated GPU!

Give me higher resolution (on the 13") and this is pretty much the perfect set-up for my needs. It would also allow Apple to keep the lines pretty clearly differentiated, although, if they wish to keep their current profit margins, it would almost necessitate a price bump.

That being said, I don't think Apple will do this, but it's nice to dream.

Price bump my arse; they already make massive profit margins from every other product they sell, how they could justify a price increase on hardware which costs much less if bought from other manufacturers is beyond me.

1680x1050, as a $100 upgrade from 1440x900, on the 13" and I'll be camping out to get one.

If they shoe horn a 1920x1200(I know it won't happen, but I'd gladly pay $500 for it), I'll fly over to FoxCon and grab one lol.

People gladly pay it, I guess they don't need to justify it more than that.

Give me at least the Mac Mini AMD GPU and a 1440x900 resolution on the 13" and I'm all in. Got the Thunderbolt Display (soon) for any desktop/big screen needs, the only way I will go away from the 17 inch.

I forgot to mention I also want a dual hard drive! I want to be able to run an SSD + a big (1TB) HDD! I need this! Oh and 1080p screen would be nice :D

...?

They've been doing this for years...what else is new? I only stated that if they wanted to keep the same profit margin, than they would almost certainly have to increase the price. Whether they decide to do that (who am I kidding, they aren't going to do what I'd like them to do anyway) is up to them. I am assuming that they don't try to cut costs elsewhere and potentially reduce the overall quality of the machine.

@DWBurke811: lol, me too, that would pretty much be my dream machine right there.

my fingers are crossed for all you guys, but as someone who's been riding the roller coaster of iPhone 4S/5: waiting for months with an "ideal" upgrade in mind and nothing but vague rumours to support it is a game that can very easily lead to disappointment :p

Lol okay, that's a little weird how you put that. I like apple too but it sounds like you worship them

I understand what you mean though

Yes, no one uses Thunderbolt because you don't. Or because the users you've talked to don't. That's how many people? A handful maybe? A sliver of the total group of Mac users.
Sure. No one uses it. I'll take your word for it.

Dude chill with this guy. So what he doesn't like the thunderbolt? No need to troll:p It's allll good man :p

Actually, apon further reading your comment, I found you're sane and actually brought good advice. I'm just use to apple cult freaks "ahhh, pro apple everything!!" Ya know? I do like apple, just not most of the culture with it, rumor blogs are fun though but I'm talking about those actually weird, "gotta have whatever apple makes" attitude. They worship apple and its creepy. Really? put your worship in an inanimate object? But before I get a lot of hater comments from people refusing to look from other peoples shoes, I do like apple a lot, and Lord-Willingly I will have my first mac with the new refresh:)

Removal of the ODD would only be justifiable by placing in a nice dedicated GPU in all models, gave a little bit bigger battery, and put in an SSD. I doubt that they would remove the ODD from the Pro, though.

I think the writing is on the wall for the ODD after it was removed from the Mac Mini. It won't be around for much longer.

how bout, for the 13", 1680x1050, 15" 1920x1200, 17" 2560x1600?

Then the 15/17 will basically be the iMacs to go! And while they're at it, bump the iMac back to 1920x1200 and 2560x1600. 16:10 rules!

Optical drive could stay on the 17, or in lieu of the drive, have a 2nd SSD to run in RAID 0.

But the Mac Mini is to the iMac as the MacBook Air is to the MacBook Pro. I am not saying the Mac Mini can not do professional level work, because it is really powerful this time around (so is the new MacBook Air), just the target market is different. For some people I could see why they don't need or want an ODD, but professionals still use and need them! I can not see them taking away the ODD from the iMac or MacBook Pro

Yeah I know what you mean. It's a 'Pro' machine. I'm interested to see what next year brings to the MBPs.

well... i would bet for this (knowing apple)

New MBP line this year, no ivi bridge (they always sell the old specs and then get the last, like with mba)

*Same processor (or slightly but slighty change)
*Same GPU (same as above)
*No Opti Bay (this will happen, yes or yes, they already dumped with
macmini, so its going to happen :)D:D:D:D))
*Same Batt Life
*Default 128GB SSD + 500HDD Custom
*Same Ress Screen, but the Black Margin gets thiner so two choices:
*Smaller MBP (like .6" less)
*Bigger Screen and same dimensions
*Thiner

Next Year:
*Ivi Bridge
*68xx GPU (Hopefully they get back to NVidia but prob they wont)
*More Ress
*Default SSD 256

+1

Apple can do a lot more with the 0.1 or inches they don't shave off than I can with the same 0.1 saved in my bag.

Yeah it'd be cool to keep the optical drive on the 17". I wonder what they're going to do though.
