havent got it yet, i just ordered it and shipped it home. im deployed and will pick it up in a month when i go on R&R leave.

back on topic, i agree with the ssd, thats why i bought one (256gb) also it would be nice to have the usb drives spread out a little bit more, just a tad.

someone mentioned an hdmi, i think thats nice, but the mini-display port/thunderbolt port will do all of that and is much better than having multiple hook ups on the sides or back of a lap top (or notebook, sorry)

either way, i have the protection plan and before i come home if something should "happen" to my MBP, hopefully i can get the new one without paying too much, not sure how it works but probably not that easy

and since we are dreaming usb 3.0 and blu-ray. yea right on the blu-ray i know i know, but 3.0, come on, its a much needed upgrade but might make apple weary about its FW port. (my external is a goflex so i have usb and firewire 800) all i would have to do is buy the cord for 3.0
Mine external hdd is 3.0 upgradeable

Would Apple update Ivy Bridge next year on the MBP first? Or the iMac?

Or both at once? :p

So I'd say there could be a small update end of this year, around November time, what do you think? If so, what would they be able to update it with??

Can't see any redesign coming until next year.

For some reason though, I can imagine a 15"/17" MBA coming before the year end. Just speculating.

On that note, they MIGHT bump up the clock speed in a BTO as they did in Nov of 2010 but a larger hard drive than the 500G 7200 or 750G 5400 is unlikely. Bumping up the ram or video is just as unlikely. Honestly there's nothing to upgrade the current MBP to or even provide as an additional BTO until Ivy Bridge

It seems highly unlikely that the MBP line will be refreshed AGAIN this year..The last two refreshes were 300+ days in between each other.. its been 190 since the last.. why would they do this... makes no sense.

No one uses thunderbolt anyway.

Seriously if they only add one more thunderbolt port to the next redesign, I am going to throw my current MBP out of the window and get a samsung.

Yes, no one uses Thunderbolt because you don't. Or because the users you've talked to don't. That's how many people? A handful maybe? A sliver of the total group of Mac users.
Sure. No one uses it. I'll take your word for it.

There are maybe half a dozen Thunderbolt peripherals available (I know of two available at this moment). So, no, (almost) nobody uses TB. It's going to be amazing in a year or two when there are more than a few products that can utilize it. If you're so sure that people are currently utilizing their TB port then maybe you could refer me to those products.

Ivy bridge?

Are you guys sure the new Macbook Pro (early 2012) will bring Ivy bridge? I hope a lot, but it seems higly improbable...! Hope I'm wrong!

So basically everybody wants thinner, more powerful, longer lasting MBPs...

Thinner. (Less space)
More Powerful. (More power consumption)
Longer Lasting. (Provides MORE power in LESS space)

Maybe it's because I'm more from the Wozniak school of thinking (i.e. think brilliance within the realms of feasible practicality), rather than the Jobs one (i.e. think brilliance beyond the realms of feasible practicality), but you guys really do tickle me sometimes. :D

From what I've heard, the Ivy Bridge chips are supposed to be 30% faster and use 50% less power than Sandy Bridge. If this at all true it would be possible for Apple to make a thinner, longer lasting, more powerful MacBook Pro. Also, remember that 50% less power consumption equals 50% less heat since the electricity is converted to heat energy. It's still wishful thinking, though.

is that true or what? it sounds darn too good to be true...

Intel Roadmaps say nothing about a change in TDP classes till Haswell and therefore they will mostly be faster only a little better in heat output. The whole 50% number is just somthing people implied after Intel said it is like a two node step and each node 30% less results in somthing like half. Who really knows what is true until the first samples see the wild and maybe some of these overclocker guys get their hands on one again.

I sure hope it doesn't get thinner. The MBP is perfect the thickness it currently has. If I wanted a thin macbook I'd buy the Air. Ugh.

prepare to be disappointed. "Air is the future of notebooks"

I would bet money the pro is getting thinner.

In that case they can scratch the entire MBP line since MBA is essentially a thinner version of MBP minus some ports and optical drive.

that's probably what will happen. they will get rid of the air brand as well and just call all their wafer thin laptops just macbooks.

When will the buyers guide change from e buyers guide change from

"Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle"

to

"Don't Buy - Updates soon"?

When there are leaks or official word about the new MBPs. I personally think we won't see anything until Q1/Q2 2012

Aren't there some new mobile Sandy Bridge CPU's coming in the next month or so with slight speed bumps? Maybe Apple will use those in its new model if:

A: There is actually gonna be a redesign

and

B: If Ivy Bridge doesn't release until Summer 2012.

Starting to seem this way. If that article would hold some weight and Ivy Bridge will be pushed back to June/July, Apple might just tide us with the upcoming revision of the Sandy Bridge chip on it's next refresh (perhaps on time for the holidays) unless they'd leave us be til July.

Before the young guns scream hell and flame me for not getting their refresh fix as soon as they wish, check out the Buyer's Guide. The longest that Apple had gone in refreshing the MBP line had been 317 days. While the shortest was 231. We are approaching our 200th day. If we'll take the 300th day route, we approximately have 3 months and a half til we see a refresh. That'll be around the holiday season. Now if Apple would just leave us dry and wait for Ivy Bridge, that'll be another 6 months from New Year (180 days) at the latest.

I'm also waiting for the Ivy Bridge refresh as many of you. But I'm afraid we'll see one more refresh of Sandy Bridge before or around the holidays. If we'll have silence way after January, it'll be a long dryspell til the end of the second quarter/early third. But expect Apple to deliver us with Ivy Bridge next year as soon as Intel gets their cr@p timeline together.

Is it just me or is anyone else not enthusiastic about a tapered design for a future MacBook Pro? While I respect how small and light the MacBook Air is, I always thought the tapered look was a bit of a necessary evil. It has to have the thickness in the back, because of components. I think the iPad 2 looks better because it maintains the same thickness everywhere. The curved sides of the iPhone 3/3GS and iPad 1 were there to hide the thickness in the middle. It never sat well with me. I'd actually prefer to have things a bit thicker (iPhone 4, current MBP) and maintain clean edges. Again...maybe it's just me.

No, it is not just you. I myself prefer the old MacBook Air design, the first generation. If Apple use that 1st Gen MBA design on the new MacBook Pros, they get a sale from me. However, how they are gonna put the ports without the use of drop down door is beyond me.:p
