Macbook Pro is meant for professionals, hence 'pro'. I seriously doubt Apple will drop the CD drive from the Pro line, because tons of professionals still use disks today.

They could make a Macbook Air 15" and 17" and make them only a little bit thicker but have more 'Pro' features, like dedicated graphics, more ram, faster processor, etc.

What I really want to see Apple make is a mid-range upgrade-able desktop tower, hope my dream becomes a reality

While I wouldn't like to see a Carbon MacBook Pro, it obvious you haven't seen real top grade carbon. It's literally nothing like plastic!!

Go check out some naked carbon fibre, like the stuff they put on Pegani Zonda's, or parts of the Maclaren F1, or even the bonnet or a Megane R26.r

WRONG! You know that carbon fibre is just plastic right? It's plastic reinforced with carbon fibres. They coat the fibres with a type of resin and becomes rockhard and indistinguishable from plastic because it IS plastic!

Knock on it and it will make the same sound as plastic. Stroke your hand against it and it will feel like plastic. Give it a nice paint job and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between regular plastics and plastics that contain carbon fibres.

It is plastic in every sense of the world. Its just reinforced with carbon fibres. Just like fiberglass is plastic reinforced with glass fibres.

I think a dark version of the Mac-book Pro similar to the pictures that are rumored leaks would look great. I think they should just ditch the optical drive and leave space for a nice GPU. Also add a 32GB SSD for the OS. I don't quite understand why people want apple to use the space that removing the optical drive would save for an extension on the battery. Is 7 hours not already more than enough??

Here's what I would consider and imagine how the future MBPs will be designed like:

-They won't be as thin as the Macbook Air: Being as thin as the Air would mean they would not support HDD and can only use flash storage. For media professionals, large amounts of space is important. It is very clear that This would mean the thickness of the new MBP would be at least as thin as a HDD. Apple could also make it dual drive system. Optical Drive is very likely to be excluded.

-Macbook Air will not replace the MBP 13. This is because Macbook Air is missing a lot of essential features such as ethernet port, and other ports.

-Standard screen resolution would be higher

Maybe theyll make it like the mac mini where the user can add a second
HD

I would like to see mores colors available on a mbp just like the ipod or even just 2 colors like iphone or ipad. would be great specially black aluminium :D
Dream 13" MBP
Black Aluminum, same unibody design, no ODD, room for AMD GPU and more battery
user-upgradeable ram
SSD, 256 standard
HDMI, no ethernet
better speakers
better display
quad-core standard

The ram is user-upgradeable though.
I do agree that there should be higher resolution displays used for the 13" model.

I think there is one thing that you might be forgetting !

A USER replaceable battery ;)

Now that would be great if they do decide to do a redesign.

Of course the next round of MPB`s need to have ( as standard ) SSD`s.

I`m OK with keeping the optical drive , and see no need to omit it , although given current trends I think there will no longer be an OD in the next MBP.

One last thing , way better speaker system , something a Mac owner would be proud of !!

Me ___ :D

The 2012 MBP 17" I purchase will be my first Mac, so I guess I'll have to get used to not unplugging the battery sometimes.

whats with the ivy bridge, when does it come out? some say march/april, some say in the beginning of 2012...
i read that theyll use up to 50 percent less power at the same ghz, is that true?

and what about hd7000, read somewhere that we can expect up to 50 percent power boost...

if all of that goes into the redesigned 2012 mbp it would be one hell of a machine, cant wait!

Can't Wait!

I really can't, I've just reformatted my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro and given it an overdose of Lion. It's not a shabby OS, can't say I notice much of a difference (not really using most of the new features yet). However the new mail app, that is where it's at people!

Anyway, on topic. I would love for them to get rid of the optical, and give me one hell of a beast of a system.
Things that I specifically want?

8GB Ram
Matte High Res Display (they better have this on release day)
Black/Charcoal Grey paint job
More Battery. - Yes, you can always have more.

Obviously with a hugely increased processor speed and GPU, but they go without saying really.

A quite recent rumor says Ivy Bridge mobile chips were pushed back to April. I expected that all along. It would have been quite surprising if they actually stuck to the plan of launching 22nm chips in Jan 2012 as they planned a view years ago.
The last times it also took Apple a few months after the new chips were available to update the MBP. It depends how much they pay for the first charge of chips that Intel sells. In any case it takes at least 1 month after Intel's launch so they have enough chips to have enough notebooks ready at launch with the usual run at new Apple toys it takes quite a bit of preparing.

Everyone hates the optical drive until they have to load a CD to upgrade their 3rd party SSD's firmware...
I very rarely use the optical drive in my Windows laptops anymore.
Thus I would personally like them to remove the optical drive from the Macbook Pro.

Well i hope they dont remove the optical but a good compromise. if they make a dock that comes with a extra battery, optical, and some other ports that docks into the laptop like some very small dells had. That would mean another port some were thou. that way the ones that want the optical to stay and the ones that dont are both happy if this happens i wold leave mine docked all the time cause i like the all in one so dont have carry anything extra.

Tell me about it man. This board gets really annoying at times.

mac RUMORS dot com... and this board gets boring. maybe join another forum? or contribute what you've heard. Its all speculation and rumors anyways, but its bound to happen sometime.

It would be nice to shed some weight, maybe ssd's, who knows... i can't wait though i just bought my 17" MBP last week!

Nice, I'm thinking on getting the 17" 2012 MBP next year.

Are you enjoying your 17"? :)

And to keep this on topic, the optical drive on laptops is annoying, since most of my music is my iPhone or laptop.

And I'd prefer a SSD over an optical drive any day.

havent got it yet, i just ordered it and shipped it home. im deployed and will pick it up in a month when i go on R&R leave.

back on topic, i agree with the ssd, thats why i bought one (256gb) also it would be nice to have the usb drives spread out a little bit more, just a tad.

someone mentioned an hdmi, i think thats nice, but the mini-display port/thunderbolt port will do all of that and is much better than having multiple hook ups on the sides or back of a lap top (or notebook, sorry)

either way, i have the protection plan and before i come home if something should "happen" to my MBP, hopefully i can get the new one without paying too much, not sure how it works but probably not that easy

and since we are dreaming usb 3.0 and blu-ray. yea right on the blu-ray i know i know, but 3.0, come on, its a much needed upgrade but might make apple weary about its FW port. (my external is a goflex so i have usb and firewire 800) all i would have to do is buy the cord for 3.0
