If Apple don't have their Macbook Pro out by September then they have shot themselves in a foot a little. If the redesign had been delayed to September, and they aware of this it would have made more sense for them to just do a silent spec bump to IvyBridge the day after they were announced and then delay the redesign to coincide perfectly with Haswell.

They're not amateurs. Or stupid. Their decisions on upgrades will make perfect business sense.

My best guess now is that Apple's just decided to wait until WWDC to introduce the whole new line, it's the best BIG MAJOR event coming up, it would have much more bang to introduce at a major expo/event like this than to do a silent update a few weeks prior. That's just my guess -- I think we will be waiting about a month.

This seems like the most likely course of action for Apple to take. If not WWDC, then maybe May 15th (Tuesday in mid May). I highly doubt if Apple would begin its Back to School promotion without new MacBook Pros for students to buy. There are plenty of undecided buyers who will go PC or Mac, but who want the latest chips.

Lol. Of course they're not, I never even suggested they were.

I was talking on the basis that someone said that it would make sense to release the redesigned Macbook Pro in September. I am confident that the new MBP update, whatever it entails, will be out by June.

So tell me, is releasing an Ivybridge laptop with a complete radical redesign less than 6 months away from Haswell good business sense, and thus ruining your MBP line so it always comes out well after the latest Intel generation of Processors?. To me it definitely doesn't. Oh and then factor in it falls outside of the peak time people buy macs, the BTS campaign?

Whether we like it or not, Apple's Macs are dictated significantly by the release dates of Intel's processors.

By the time Haswell comes out, Apple will have discontinued it's computer business and will only be selling iOS devices, software and music and still be raking in mega-bucks. You must realize that at the current point now, Apple's computer business makes up less than 10% of their total profits. Much different than the 1980s and mid-1990s where Macintosh was supreme on Apple's revenue books. iTunes store, iOS store, iPhone sales, and iPad sales make Apple's computer sales look pitiful today. I could easily see Apple getting out of the Mac business and going complete "Post-PC era" on us, in the not-to-distant future.

Deluded.

'Post-PC' is years and years away. Even then that doesn't mean PCs are just going to die. PCs are going to be with us for many a year. Simple fact is that iOS are pure devices to consume, they're not efficient working devices.

From Tim Cook at the Back to the Mac event in 2010:

This means that if Apple were to spin off the Mac business, it alone would be the number 110 business in the Fortune 500 list of companies, Cook noted.

Also, one of the most important things for iOS is the developer ecosystem. Unless Apple does something like release XCode for Windows  then there will always need to be at least some Macs left.

Even Steve Jobs himself said that there would always be a place for traditional PCs:

"PCs are going to be like trucks," Jobs said. "They are still going to be around." However, he said, only "one out of x people will need them."

If a new MBP is announced in June, it will probably begin shipping in June. It will probably mmediately available for sale.

The current MBP will stop being sold by Apple. The remaining MBPs in the stock of retailers will probably be sold for a lower price.

So the moment they announce it at WWDC (IF that happens), then the current macbook pro's on the website will be discontinued (I don't want refurbished)? That sucks, I want the DVD drive.. but at the same time, want the new version =(. what other retailers you think might still sell the current ones after new ones have been released?

Whatever shops sell Macbooks not including Apple stores.

You could try a retail Apple store also. Why don't you want refurbished by the way? As good as new, with a full warranty, but less money.

Solid state is getting cheap ($200-256gig).
I'm bummed apple is waiting.
cs6 is up for preorder, but I can't buy it until I know if I need to go mac or pc.
A 17" MBP w/4x ram slots (32 gig 3rd party max) would be sick for After Effects and Premiere.
Truly a desktop replacement.

Loose lips sell ships.

Just about every monumentally bone-headed business decision in history has been made by intelligent professionals. ;)

Stupid amateurs never get far enough to make really bad decisions.

Interesting article I came across about the new iPad:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57...-for-the-third-generation-ipad/?tag=cnetRiver

Would be interesting if this was true and if Apple faces a similar issue with the upcoming MacBook Pro. Perhaps Apple is pushing for a full redesign but are facing production, design, or supply issues- could be anything from possible new battery/power management system, Retina display or IGZO displays, slimmer design issue. Maybe, just maybe, Apple would deem the redesign unfeasible to meet the June or Summer release date and instead, release a spec bump with the same chassis.

Simply said, even though iOS devices > Macintosh in terms of focus, sales, profits, etc., Apple still doesn't want to lose their edge or niche over the computer/laptop industry to PC. If they push a release of anything whether a redesign or a spec jump past June or Summer, they'd be losing too much to competing IB desktops and laptops, sales from students, etc.

In terms of the "lack of rumors or leaks", I totally agree with you that its been quiet and some of you may have even bought refurbed 2011 models already- trust me, even I debated that ($1700-1800 for a BNIB 2.4Ghz 15" Late-2011 MBP is tempting). However you cannot compare the "amount of leaks" of MacBooks with the iPhone and iPads. iPhones were allegedly left behind in bars blah blah blah. Pretty hard to leave a 'MBP prototype' behind or really, find the need to take it outside to test anyways. iPads were mainly leaked from inside sources in Foxconn. MacBooks, if I remember correctly, are made elsewhere in Shanghai, China, NOT by Foxconn. Its facilities are under much less pressure, attention, and heat from the media.

Last thing worth mentioning... I love how all of the sources or "news" on the 2012 MacBook Pro surrounds the image of the two adjacent hard drives and larger battery. I mean really... a poorly photoshopped, out-of-proportion image from Reddit is the best source we have? I should totally photoshop a MBP logo on a potato and send it to Slashgear so I could make headline news ;)

Very interesting article, thanks! You've got some great points in your post. I, for one, think that a redesign of the MacBook Pro would be a very difficult feat for Apple. There are too many components that need all the depth that the current chassis supplies. I guess we'll see this June (hopefully).

While I might agree with you, there are two things you'd have to consider. First, you're on MacRumors. Everyone here is speculating and guessing as to what the new update might include. Rumors are predictions, not estimates. Leading to the second point. You're on the Internet. Not everyone has done their research. Not everyone has read everything there is to read online. You're going to have to learn how to ignore and skip over redundant and absurd comments. I mean people here are asking the same questions and posting the same comments. So what? Just skip over them. I mean, about three people commented earlier with more or less the same message in your comment yet you chose to say the same thing. But here's the thing, there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone should be able to and can speak their own opinion. Just don't be a downer and whine about people speculating on a forum dedicated to rumors. If that's the case, why'd you join the forum to begin with?

Anyways enough time spent replying to your comment. Maybe you could save us all some time and ring up Tim and ask him personally for his prediction on the specs and release date of the MBP :)

The last time the Macbook Pro was updated (October 2008) we had a fair few leaks.

That's just a small selection of them, and as you can see they started months before they were released. I hope however that Apple has just tightened up on leaks this time around.

It depends. Perhaps Apple wants to introduce a redesigned MBP with retina displays, and for some reason it can't do it in June, but will be able to do it in September. Apple may hold the release of the redesigned MBP until September so it comes out before Windows 8. Apple has learned to "wow" people without having the best hardware.

Yes, we are. But it's been so much fun, and that's all that matters! We're not being paid for predicting the release schedule of Apple (and there are lots of people - so called consultants or analysts - who are actually being paid for that and who are also completely wrong).

Thank you, that's great. I don't believe we will see such a significant update in the future. Apple was certainly experimenting with the unibody design at that time. If we see a redesign (and I think we will), it will be a subtle one.

Does anyone have a spare time machine that they could use to travel to WWDC in June? The wait is killing me right now.

Thanks for those links! Definitely interesting looking back at those pics almost four years to date.

I would definitely be leaning with Skaertus on his last comment saying that most likely we'd see more or less the same chassis in the next MBP. If they do stick with the same design... my only question surrounds the future of the ODD. What would they do with it? I mean if they really did take it out, they'd definitely have to rearrange the internals to map out possibly a larger battery or even a second standard hard drive bay. Also, they'd have to redesign the outside slightly to account for the cd-slot for the ODD. Would they design it such that the logic board allows them to put in more TB or USB hubs on the other side? I for one would love to see that happening.

At this rate, if you took a picture of a potato and make it look even close to an interesting looking mac notebook, you'd make front page on every apple related blogging site! I think people are just getting desperate/impatient with the lack of information that Apple has leaked/released/etc, myself included.

For me personally, it's getting to the point where I really don't care what they release, just release something!

I know right.. aren't we on macRUMORS site? Shouldn't we be talking about rumors regarding apple products? sheesh.

My point exactly. The problem is,there are NO rumors, except the ones you create yourselves. It is this huge groupthink echo chamber with no evidence to back anything up.

Not that I care, except it drives me crazy when people are so willfully blind and stupid. Oh and for the guy who quoted my "rumor" without realizing it was a joke, nice one, You nailed it. LOL

I'm surprised no-one (including my-self) has mentioned 802.11ac yet!

Personally I would LOVE gigabit wireless, fast wireless file transfer is one thing, but finally being able to stream uncompressed blu-ray rips throughout my house would be amazing.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is the very first brand to introduce it. They were ahead of the curve with 802.11n and still one of the only brands who use dual-band wireless cards.

With Qualcomm already producing 802.11ac i'm proposing it will be a major new feature in the 2012 MBP!

Bring on 802.11ac!!! :):):):)
