I am just really curious if they keep the old storage format (comes with HDD but with SSD upgrade option), what are they going to put in that huge optical bay space

More battery hopefully. Even if they do HDD+SSD they'll likely use the blade style SSD which sits on the logic board and doesn't really take up much space.

After buying a new MacBook Air, I don't know if I can ever go back to HDD, SSD may be the biggest jump in general computing experience since OS X was introduced imo.

I hope they at least have the option of swapping out a larger HDD for a smaller SSD at no/minimal extra cost.

Source? Or just guessing like I was?

They already ship machines with SSD+HDD combos (iMacs) and they already buy the blade style SSDs in large quantities. I bet that they're cheaper for Apple because they don't have a case and mounting hardware like a normal SSD and because they buy them in such large quantities.
I was just speculating. Now that you bring up the iMac argument, which I had forgotten about, I suppose a SSD + HDD combo is in the cards. I just don't think that Apple would remove the MacBook Pro's ODD just so that they could add an extra hard drive. I think a larger battery makes more sense because they'll need it to drive the Retina Display, similar to the new iPad getting a much larger battery.

If it comes with the blade style SSD like mac air, and with the option to add a second 2.5" drive, how much storage space do you think will the default have? similar to the air storage?:D

But I don't think a blade SSD would take up any of the space from the ODD. It would sit on the logic board (above something other than the CPU and GPU for heat reasons). The HDD could go where the ODD goes now, and then the battery could stretch across the whole front of the notebook.

Apple isn't about to remove the optical drive just to fill that space with nothing or another hard drive. They're not going to introduce a blade SSD + HDD setup either. We're looking at a typical 2.5" long, 9.5 mm deep hard drive with SSD option.
My guess is that it will have a 7mm deep 2.5" SSD (e.g. The Intel 520)

The Bloomberg article that just hit the front page specifically mentions flash memory:

The MacBook Pro machines, to be unveiled at Apple’s annual developers conference starting June 11, also will feature high- definition screens like those on the iPhone and iPad, as well as flash memory to cut startup times and extend battery life, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been made public.

For those who don't read the front page:

"Apple Inc. is preparing a new lineup of thinner MacBook laptops running on more powerful chips made by Intel Corp., people with knowledge of the plans said.

We now have three somewhat independent rumors within a week, the last one seeming quite reliable, and we're a month away from a potential release date. Now the supply shortages should start dripping in :)

It better have space for an HDD. I love SSDs but I can say many of us here could not make do with JUST an SSD. We need space for stuff.

Giggity!

Liquinn must be so jelly right now! :p

Well if you look back a few pages you'll see that he is going to sell his 3 week old macbook (that he religiously defended the purchase of) and is going to get the update. Must be some rich kid to burn money like that.

Or horribly misguided with impulse buying issues? :p

Yeah, I remember reading that. I wonder if it will actually happen though.
