I've always tried using external ODDs anyway as I didn't want to wear out the internal one.
I might buy two MacBook Pros so I don't wear out the first one

My perfect laptop:
15" screen,
Highest resolution possible
fastest available quad core w/ HT *such as the rumored 2.7ghz 3rd gen i7.
16GB RAM
180GB SSD
Backlit keyboard
Gigabit Ethernet,
3-4 USB 3.0 and esata (or TB->esata I guess?)
Weighs 5lb's and last 6-9 hours on battery
There's a lot of portable, USB-powered optical drives out right now for fairly cheap. It's not a huge setback if an optical drive is needed. I've always tried using external ODDs anyway as I didn't want to wear out the internal one.
If they are going all SSD on the MBP, they should be 512GB as standard, 1TB as a pay for option.
These are Pro machines, so small storage won't cut it.
With this MBP redesign I can also see an overall price increase, but can see the MacBook airs prices staying the same or even being lowered.

Do you think it is possible to install 10.6.8 on the new machines ?
The largest Apple retailer in Portugal (which is a French multinational) as just launched today a 300USD-500USD price drop on the 13' MBP.
I also noticed that the spanish shops of the same retailer do not have any stock available (just on a couple of models).
This is not a typical campaign and can indicate something is about to happen.

I feel I may have sold my MacBook to soon as it looks like there will be no redesign with rumors quieting down after a big hype all we see now is iPhone and ipod touch rumors, but we see no parts to macbook pros. The clocks thicking down I hope apple proves me wrong.
FNAC tends to lower dramatically the prices of MBPs before a new release. It's quite a typical sign that a release is going to happen. However, that is no news at all. Bloomberg already stated a WWDC release.

Just because there were MBP rumors last week an iPhone rumors this week doesn't meant that one is more likely than the others. The iPhone and iPod touch are most likely still scheduled for October, just like they were last year.

I haven't analyzed FNAC pricing behaviour when there were changes on MBPs on the past, however they did this same campaign 2 months ago with severe drops on MBP and MBA.
We cannot forget that Portugal is deeply sunk on a crisis which is afecting all Europe and therefore price drops will tend to be "business as usual".
The only fact that leads me to think that something is going to happen is the lack of stock on Spain plus the fact that Bloomberg wouldn't risk its reputation on a rumor without a solid and credible source behind.
Don't worry, those MBP leaks were classic "from Apple" leaks: controlled info to Bloomberg and the WSJ. You can pretty much bank on a redesigned MBP at WWDC. If we don't see leaked parts, that just means the rumors sites haven't found them yet.

Back in late 2011 the crysis existed already, and such discounts already happened. Fear not: a new MBP should come by WWDC. I'm betting the 12th of June, because it's simulataneously a Tuesday *and* my birthday![]()
I don't know about you guys, but I am hoping for dual HDDs... SSD to boot from, and an optional SATA HDD for space. Also the ditching of the optical CD drive would be my dream! That would make this a true PRO machine, along with USB3, Retina Display, and the thinness of the MBA!!!
Super pumped for this refresh!!!!![]()
