Apparently rumor has it that they are still including an optical drive too, so I won't get my hopes up regarding an additional drive bay (which I agree, SSD to boot and HDD for storage!)

As far as I know rumours either say nothing about the optical drive, or they say that is disappearing. If Apple do get rid of it it's highly unlikely they'll use that space as a second hard drive slot, they'll make the MBP slimmer instead. The only way I can see an SSD HDD combination would be if Apple had blade style SSD and a hard drive slot, but there is no evidence they are doing this so that would just be wishful thinking.

Just because there were MBP rumors last week an iPhone rumors this week doesn't meant that one is more likely than the others. The iPhone and iPod touch are most likely still scheduled for October, just like they were last year.

But the iPhone 4 was released in June 2010, so imo I can't see why it would be an October wait; some 4 months after people's two year contract would have ended. Didn't the 4s come out around about the time when the contracts would be up for those with a 3gs? Just a thought I had..

I currently have the 13 in 2011 base model and this is what i want for the 2012 13 in base model:

-full hd screen ( seriously the resolution that we have now is super crappy)

-the ability to play games like half life 2 and portal 1, 2 at decent settings without the machine overheating to 80-90c ( and the fans going crazy loud)

-a minimun of 8 hr of battery life with everything on medium+ wifi and 1080p videos ( ok maybe 7 hr with full hd videos ....)

- make the ram and the hdd ( if it is still going to be normal hdd for the base 13 in model) faster ... seriously.

Thats it for me, the only reason why i ll change my current pro for the 12 model is if they get a full hd display+ decent graphics for games. Please make it happen!

waste of money getting a new mac it looks to me.. it seems like your a gamer.. you can get a high performance pc laptop that will run games like that very well for less price.

I have a good gaming pc+consoles and yes i am a gamer but i use pro manly for studying+surfing the net+talk to friends. I would really like to play some of my steam games on it tho, i remember taking my pro abroad and wanting to play some half life 2 and the fans going crazy loud and then then it froze:eek:
I just want to be able to do some light gaming if i wanted to.

Doesn't sound normal, were you in Windows or OSX? Unfortunatley the fans have always been wild when gaming on all the Apple laptops I had from Powerbook to Macbook Pro to Unibody Pro and I don't see things changing for the 2012 one especially if they plan on making it even thinner.

If you want a gaming laptop your going to have to get an Alienware or deal with the fans. Pro Tip - Get some headphones.

Totally agree with you!

We're paying high, we deserve the best with a nice discrete gpu, even in the 13"!

Don't want to have to buy the 15 inch only because of the gpu!

Come on Apple!

And as i can see in this forum, most people who advises you to buy an Alienware or a gaming pc are blind fanboys! Why should we buy another laptop If we already have the technology and are paying the price to have the best of both worlds in only one?

I Love Apple, but i'm not blind and the actual 13 inch MacBook doesn't suit my needs because it lacks a dGpu! So i had to carry the extra weight of the 15 inch until i finally gave it away!

Ummm the point of the 13" BASE model is to be a mobile platform that has a bit of power while still being very mobile. People already complain that it gets too hot, adding a dGPU will only make matters worse. The 13 inch has one fan and cannot fit another.

And have you even opened one up? It's already cramped inside.

In most games there's no framerate cap meaning your machine will always deliver the maximum FPS it can without overheating. That means that even if you play an old game with crappy graphics, your MBP will get super hot just because it will try to generate a very high framerate.

Since 80-90°C is considered a normal temperature (the laptop is hot but doesn't cause damage to its internal components) and that the MBP's heat dissipation relies in part on its case acting like a big heatsink to reduce the need of fans, the case does get very hot to the touch compared to plastic laptops.

What I suggest doing is putting a FPS cap on your games. It should be a setting in the game options, but most of the time you have to edit some file with a text editor to achieve this. Just try to google a tutorial on how to put a framerate cap on your game.

I put a 40FPS cap on StarCraft II and it helped me keep my temperatures lower. It also reduced the frequency of framerate drops while in big battles, since my lower average temperature apparently lets my GPU perform better when more performance is needed. There was a separate key in StarCraft II for a FPS cap while in the menu (there are 3D elements in the background) so I also set a 20 FPS cap while in the menu so my Mac could cool off a little in between games.

Both the 3GS and iPhone 4 were released in June/July. The 4S was released in October.

The pattern so far is that the new iPhone always ships with the new iOS, and Apple always previews the new iOS a couple months in advance to give developers time to support it and test it.

When the iPhone has been updated in June/July in the past, there was an iOS preview event in March/April with the final iOS being released with the new phone in June/July.

With the 4S, iOS was previewed at WWDC in June and released with the phone in October. Since we're just a couple weeks away from WWDC and there hasn't been an iOS preview event yet it looks like we're on the October release schedule again this year.

Another quiet day/night of rumors...worry is building.

----------

On an interesting note I did talk to a friend at best buy who works in shipping and receiving. He states a lot of MacBook pros are coming in and have been coming in. He states it could be due to main warehouses clearing supply/space for new arrivals and getting the soon to be older models on the shelves for customers to walk out with during the sale. All speculation.

I've had my unibody MacBook since October 2008 and am looking for a new laptop to buy.
I have my eyes on the 17" MacBook Pro.

What do you guys think: will the 17" MacBook Pro receive a re-design at the same time as the 15"?

If the chances of the 17" MacBook Pro receiving a re-design is slim, I'd rather not wait but go ahead and buy the laptop now.

That's a tough question to answer and I don't think anyone here has a better idea than anyone else. Here are are couple things to consider however:

1. There was the rumor that the 17" MBP is going to be discontinued. How much truth there is to this rumor, no one really knows. The article is below:

https://www.macrumors.com/2012/04/23/apple-predicted-to-discontinue-17-inch-macbook-pro/

2. The 15" MBP was updated with the unibody redesign several months before the 17" MBP received the unibody update so it has happened before. I'm not sure the reasoning behind this staggered update but perhaps someone on here does and would care to elaborate.

3. If the 15" MBP gets updated with the 'Retina Display' with a resolution of 2880x1800 and the 17" doesn't get updated for a couple of months, then the 15" MBP would have a higher resolution than the 17" which would be a little strange. Yes, the 17" would have more screen real estate than the 15" Retina in HiDPI mode, but still a lower PPI

Those are the main things I could think of for now. If you can wait, WWDC is only 2 1/2 weeks away. If the 17" does get updated with the slimmer design in the next few months, it would be then and if it doesn't get updated at WWDC, I would expect it around September/October as the 17" unibody update came ~3 months after the 15" unibody update.

These are sources I want to hear from on these forums!!!

Or the rumours have died down because the only 'rumour' was a controlled leak.

Interesting point i don't mind waiting till june for these new features, however i heard over @ cnet the editors growling about the retina screen on the 13inch macbook and how it will make the viewing experience awkward with smaller icons and font.

My friends brothers dogs boyfriend works at Apple Corporate it told me the Machooks are going to have Hologram retina displays and Siri will be a 3D model wearing a Bikini

You're going to be disappointed, and rightfully so. The 13" is not meant to be a gaming machine, so they wont target to that niche.

These CNET editors haven't a clue as to how Apple will implement a retina display, so I'd take what they're saying as rubbish for now.

Games that run on the Source engine (Half Life series, Team Fortress, Portal, etc.) are definitely not very demanding games. In fact the Ivy Bridge integrated graphics will probably do pretty well running them at medium or possibly even high settings.

Another quiet day/night of rumors...worry is building.

No fresh new rumors/leaks about new Macbook Pros for one week: Apple has obviously cancelled the entire refresh

So they you mean the way that happened on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad when they went to retina? Except it didn't. Apple's implementation was to give more detail and clarity in text, photos and videos, not to make things smaller. And it will be the same on their computers.

My friends brothers dogs boyfriend works at Apple Corporate it told me the Machooks are going to have Hologram retina displays and Siri will be a 3D model wearing a Bikini

I've learned from bitter experience to never trust anything dogs tell me about computers.

Damn the waiting is killing me till then I am looking foward to a 15 inch MacBook pro with:

1. USB 3.0

2. Retina Display

3. Graphic bumps

4. Faster HDD access

5. A new design and thiness since the 2008 release

6. Mountain lion preinstalled

7. CPU bumps

8. Longer battery life

What I least look forward to:

1. Loss of the optical drive if apple can place a USB 3.0 port against its rival thunderbolt why can't they place a blu ray drive which would complement the retina display.

2. Those extra costs for going retina
