So, AppleInsider is still sticking to the old rumour that the new MBPs will look like the airs, which is directly against the 9to5 sources that point to a thinner MBP, but still with the familiar and distinct MBP look.

Let the battle of the rumours begin.

(I hope that apple insider are wrong. Luckily their sources can be traced back to Digitimes)

The source article makes no mention of what they will look like, and appleinsider just reiterate earlier rumours that the new MBPs are going to take some design cues from the airs, which could just mean thinner and no ODD.

The article does say
The sources expect component shipments to continue to rise in June, with the new MacBooks possibly to launch in July.

but it is digitimes, so lets hope it's wrong and they launch in june.

Very interesting. However on the appleinsider article one can read:

" The supply chain is expected to ramp even faster next month ahead of a 'possible launch' of the computers by Apple in July."

So are we going to see a delay in the announcement on WWDC, or is July the month when they will be available ?

I'm a video editor and right now I have a 2011 i7 2.2ghz Macbook Pro. For me it was essential to replace the optical drive with a second hard drive and use the express card port for a third external hard drive or if I have to go completely mobile I could put an Express SSD Card in that slot and have my 3rd drive that way. It's a great set up, although even with the i7 Sandy Bridge it's still a bit slow for editing long projects. Anyways, if the rumors about them discontinuing the 17" model, or they get rid of the optical drive and the express card slot, then I'm sadly going to be leaving apple and going back to PC. :( I really hope they keep those features for professionals who rely on it. I think there's a possibility that the 17" model gets upgraded specs with pretty much the same body, and the 13 and 15" models get the slimmer redesign.

I've created a poll so you can vote on the features you most anticipate on the new MacBook Pro: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1376216/

Well, if the MacBook Pro is launched during WWDC, it will be released before its average release cycle (at least according to the Mac Rumors Buyer's Guide). Although I expect it to be released during WWDC, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets released a month later. It wouldn't be off the rumors that are already circulating...

I could not agree with you more! However, my expectations are very low. I do not mean to be crude, but Steve Job's has passed and despite his ingenuity, he lacked giving customers what they wanted. I love my Apple products. Windows 8 looks very appealing (if it works) and I fell in love with the new HTC Sensation - It makes my iPhone look as antiquated as a rotary dial phone! I have high expectations for the Macbook Pro and I plan on buying one. However, it is some heavy block of aluminum with minor changes - I will be deeply disappointed! - We all will be! Jenny

Well, I think we can all expect something else at this point. For the following reasons:

1. Over 100 different ultrabooks are going to be released in 2012. We will have 15" ultrabooks, and ultrabooks which are also tablets. Lots of different products and great designs. Too much competition for Apple.

1.1. Asus is about to release its Zenbook Prime. This ultrabook will have a 1920x1080 IPS display which reviews are saying is much superior to the screen found in MacBook Airs. One of the versions of this ultrabook will have a dedicated video card.

1.2. Sony has managed to put a standard voltage Core i7 inside a 13" laptop (the Vaio Z) which is even lighter than a 11" MacBook Air.

2. Retina Displays are coming and Apple can't wait anymore. If Apple doesn't adopt them, somebody else certainly will.

2.1. These displays are already available from suppliers, and they cost only US$ 100 more. Just waiting for someone to put on a notebook. If Apple doesn't do it, somebody else will.

2.2. Windows 8 is going to be released in October (probably) and it will support high resolution displays. It's just a matter of time before we see the first high-resolution Windows laptops.

2.3. Mac OS X Lion already supports Retina Displays and OS X Mountain Lion will support them even better. That's obviously for a reason!

3. Not too many rumors, but there are solid leaks. Bloomberg published an article citing a reliable font.

I think we may expect something else from Apple this year. The competition is very aggressive, and Apple will fight to remain at the top.

Lol, so you have low or high expectations?

Im just messing with you :)

But this is getting ridiculous, is apple really going to update its whole mac line at the WWDC? Something is amiss.

I'd say it doesn't have to be either considering it's only a rumour, so would take that July date with a pinch of salt at the moment.

Hey guys, I'm sorry if this isn't in the right place but I'm sure you guys would be able to help me with this.

I've been involved in lots of web-development and Android stuff and it's really my only "job" as a 16 year old. I've made a good chunk from it and certainly more than the $2000 I'd probably need for a Macbook. I'd like to get into iOS development as although I've been getting really good at Android, apparently iPhone and iPad apps are where the real money is at if I ever have a good idea for a paid app.

I still just have a hard time justifying $2000+ for a laptop. Is that a good estimate? I'm thinking it will be $1800 retail again and another $350 for AppleCare which I might have to forgo. But again, is the potential of a good iOS app reason enough to drop $2000? I have more than enough to pay for it, but it still would make a huge hole in my bank.

I'd just generally like to know what you guys think of all this. I'd like a nice, shiny new Macbook with all the bells and whistles that come with it, I just don't know if it's a good idea.

If you just need a Mac to develop on you can just go get a Mac Mini and hook that up, but the MacBook Pro is definitely the best laptop around and is worth the $2000+. It just depends on your taste.

I had another idea. Would a hackintosh laptop setup work too? I fear that if Apple's strict about things, they would know when I try to submit apps for approval.

Hackintoshes take a lot of work, if your building this for work and time is money, then I personally wouldn't go that route. As others have said the Mac Mini is the cheapest way to get a Mac.

Though you might want to wait for the 2012 Mac Mini, I hear they will have a retina display ;)

Good one :) Problem is it needs to be a laptop for other reasons. A hackintosh sounds like a very logical solution to this. It would give me motivation to build an app that makes money and once it's made enough for a Macbook, then I'll go with what would then be the newest generation MBP. Plus, this would more than offset what Apple "lost" by me using a hackintosh.

While WWDC might be a little earlier than the average release cycle, the last time there was an update in october, the next udpate happened at WWDC. That was back in 2008/2009 when the unibody was introduced on the 15" MBP in October 2008 and then updated along with the introduction of 13" Unibody MBP at WWDC in June 2009.

I'm really hoping that digitimes is wrong about this delay. They've been wrong about so many things that I wish were true so I'd be pretty upset if this was one of the very few things they were right about.

Everything, except maybe the clearly sun-setted Mac Pro, will get Ivy Bridge. I'm guessing that only the MBP will get a redesign, though. As for retina displays in the iMac, I doubt it.

I think you're setting your sights a little high.
Realistic options are the Nvidia GT 640M, or the AMD 7770M. There is the outside chance of a GT 650M, but don't get your hopes up.

Well of those two the 7770m is clearly the better choice atleast. 640m isn't even an upgrade from the current 6770m in terms of performance.

I just want a few things...

1. Ivy Bridge (which I'm sure we will get)
2. Retina type screen (chances are good)
3. if no OD, then room for 2 drives SSD or HDD ( ?)
4. Potent video card

If the new MBP has "retina displays", 4 times more pixels as stated, it would need 4 times GPU power if you don't want to lose some performance.
Very unlikely, they could do it in the iPad but I don't figure how they'd do for MBP :/

My prediction for 15" mbp is:
1.) OD gone,LAN port gone,firewire gone
2.) 2 Thunderbolt ports
3.) Integraded SSD on mainboard (Basic model with 32GB for OSX (by that i mean entry model with lowest price))
4.) No place for second 2.5" Drive
5.) Bigger battery
6.) Thinner design
7.) nvidia 650GT 2GB
8.) 2880 x 1800 resolution (optional to choose)
9.) Basic model with 4 GB of ram (2x2GB)
And entry model will cost 1799$

No you just need an integrated graphics card that can handle the resolution. Apparently that has arrived.

I don't see integrated graphics playing Diablo 3 in 2880*1800, and even discrete graphics should be then in the top range (nvidia 660 GTX / Radeon 7770...)

As someone already pointed out, you would play games at a lower resolution than the display itself. You would play Diablo 3 at 1440x900 or lower (if that's the base resolution of your screen).
