i have already posted about this on here, but i just want to remind you all, since youre all seemingly losing track of what you want or what is possible.

if it gets slimmed down like most of you hope, you can kiss a removable/changeable/upgradeable hdd or ssd good buy and say hello to built in flash storage. (you would seriously rather have a thin design?)

with that said, its not getting any slimmer without replacing those with flash storage.

so do you really still want that, and/or do you really see them doing that?

if not, lets forget about the whole idea of it being thinner. its as thin as it gets for now my dears.

You...don't know what you're talking about.

Are you following the Tim Cook interview?

Walt: What's coming out next week?

Cook: That's a great question, but I'm not going to answer it.

Walt: But what's coming out?

Cook: Some great stuff!
Yeah, I was wondering about that. He can't actually mean next week. He must mean WWDC. I'm welcome to surprises though.

how and why? so i can clarify for myself, and adjust my thoughts accordingly. unless your going to bring in the idea of them using the newerish 1.8" drives that are still not as readily available on the market. which is likely, i will agree, but that would be the only other option besides built in flash.

The Macbook Air, which is even slimmer than the rumored slim MBP, has a replaceable SSD. It's not soldered or built in to the logic board, it's a removeable card.

There's also no real physical reason why a 2.5" HDD wouldn't fit into a slimmer MBP.

I understand with the MBA the RAM is already maxed but if the RAM went bad is the RAM module replaceable in the MBA?

No, the RAM on the MBA is soldered on to the logic board. That will probably be one of the key distinctions between the new Pro and the Air. Even if they go as far as removing Ethernet and switching completely to SSDs, I think they will keep the replaceable RAM slots.

RAM and HDD are the two biggest things for me that needs to be replaceable. Battery is important also. It's a deal breaker if they are not. Those are the 3 components that fail the most often.

I'm looking forward to trying out mac but if they soldered basic components I'll probably look back to PC.

I highly doubt they'll be soldering on the RAM/Storage on the new MPBs. That'd be ridiculous.

Exactly. Apple has a winning model now why would they change it or make it "thinner" ?

I really think you're just going to see ivy bridge, gpu update, and some misc updates like sata 3 and usb 3. I don't think it will be thinner. It doesn't need to be thinner IMO. Oh and a display upgrade. The whole retina thing will be the "redesign".

That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it.

Solder ram = deal breaker also non replaceable HDD or SSd = same
No 1080p screen would also be a deal breaker... Which is why alienware 14x is out

Is it happening!? I hope so!!

would they take out the ethernet port? The school where I'm going next year only has wired internet in the dorms so I need that port

Given the amount of space above and below the hard-drive area in the existing 15" Macbook Pro I would be very surprised if a standard SATA drive or SSD would not fit in the redesign (assuming the renders are close to being correct).

Add in the fact that you potentially also have the space previously allocated to the optical drive to play with and I really don't see why you think standard RAM and drives will not fit??

Edit: Added maxfischersweet's original quote for clarification.

I agree. I also think it would be equally ridiculous to make the HDD/SSD not a user-replacable item.

Think about it. Early MBPs had user-replacable RAM, but not the HDD. In the unibody design, both are user-replacable. So to make either or both not user-replacable would be a big backward step.

By user-replacable, I mean without voiding the warranty, not that it isn't soldered to the logic board - the HDD in my early '08 is a standard 2.5" but to replace it I have to open the case
