Interesting that there are no rumors about a standard SSD plus a second conventional hard disc for mass storage instead of the drive bay.

While there were rumors about the ditching of the optical drive, there was no hint what would be in its place.

An MBA flat design would be impossible by maintaining computing power and a dedicated graphic chip without a melt-down.

So, it's pretty much open - or there will be no radical design change after all.
Yeah I agree. I've read some reports that Ivy Bridge is going to be announced or either released on the 23rd of this month; could someone clarify which it is as I've of course heard conflicting reports. Thanks.

They should keep one line of Macbook Pro with optical drive (for people who still have CDs). May be high end macbook pros with SSDs. They could postpone the refresh until OS Mountain Lion is available.

What would they gain by waiting for Mountain Lion to be released?

I agree it's too quiet. I wish they would hurry up, the current version of the MBP is pretty old (just updated specs) and I really need a new laptop! Just due to the lack of rumors and Intel delays I am going to guess July. I heard a few people throwing that month around as a possibility and it sounds about right to me. Apple probably won't make a big deal out of it though, unlike a new iPad or iPhone.

Personal predictions:
New Air-like form factor
No optical drive
SSD still optional, not standard
Ivy Bridge
Higher resolution screen
Thunderbolt but no USB3.0
Longer battery life
15 and 17 inch models only.

Which Intel delays are you referring to?

News and rumors are always scarce over the weekend. I think we will hear more things this week and next. As far as a release date, I'm still sticking with April 24th. The real question is if we will indeed see a redesign or just an upgraded MBP without a SuperDrive in the same case.

I see. Why April 24th though?

Well it's mosty just a hunch but the 24th of April is a Tuesday; and Apple likes to refresh Mac lines on Tuesdays. However, they have done it on Thuesdays too. Also, if the last rumors are believed to be true intel is going to announce/release the ivy bridge CPUs on the 23rd now instead of the 29th. Apple is a very big customer for intel and usually releases Mac updates with new chips a week or so before they are released to the public. When the early 2011 MBPs came out it was a week before intel released sandy bridge publicly. Apple is also holding their financial conference on the 24th. I don't know if that means anything but it could.

This is what I found from here (ignore the date in the URL): http://9to5mac.com/2012/04/12/ivy-b...hunderbolt-ships-likely-to-land-in-next-macs/

"Today, we have two pieces of Intel-related news with reports claiming a solid April 23 launch date for the Ivy Bridge introduction, while others report Intel has begun shipping its next-generation Thunderbolt technology."

I see.

"Ivy Bridge CPUs most-likely to land in future Macs would launch between April 22 and April 28 with availability by April 29."

That's about the Macs right?

I'm assuming that it will either be 1. Redesign without SuperDrive or 2. Updated Specs Keeping SuperDrive, in the same case. (hope not!)

Apple would redesign it once they get rid of the Super Drive, its the perfect opportunity! :apple:

OK ... here it is.

1. Superdrive retired. Space freed to allow for 2nd HDD and hence SSD to become standard on the range.
2. Ivybridge (quad cores available May and dual cores late June)
3. USB 3 included but not emphasised at launch
4. Thunderbolt port included, Firewire 800 dropped
5. No standard retina displays (... yet). Possibly options on high end models.

13" may lag the higher spec models and remain on Sandybridge and eventually go EOL.

I'll try to get more info when I see Tim for beers later today....

Yes to all of these but what about GPU upgrade?

My wish list includes:

  • Retina display
  • Drop opitical drive
  • Dual drive - 128gb SSD + 500gb HDD
  • 3x USB 3.0 ports
  • Drop firewire 800 (thunderbolt adapters would be amazing)
  • And last but not least Quad-Core Ivy-Bridge in 13” models

All in a snazzy new 13” form factor.

What……..up

Perfection right there. Please make it happen :apple::D

Digitimes points to a report in Taiwan's Economic Daily News claiming that Apple is planning to introduce updated iMac models in June, a bit later than some had initially hoped given Intel's Ivy Bridge launch schedule that would see quad-core desktop processors launch at the end of this month.

The report repeats a claim from earlier this week indicating that Apple will be using anti-reflective glass for the new iMac, and also suggests that updated MacBook Pro models are due "at the end of the second quarter".

END of second quarter is also June. This falls rights with the time period of mountain lion which is stated on apple's website to be "coming this summer."

I can see it now, with the 13" mbps also due around then they all come out the same time period with Ivy bridge; by which point the 17" will also be ready!!
IN JUNE.

sounds late but cmon, there has been like no rumours lately except for the old "in production." Would the mbp release come out with the 13" for 2 months?... no. most likely if not at the same time, maybe september - october the airs get released along side the New iPhone. and then possible a new ITV or whatever apple has in stock for this "exciting year," says Tim Cook. ;)

my 0.02$

I really don't think they would push the MBP refresh all the way back to the iMac refresh and especially until ML. They say ML will be summer buty guess it will be late summer. But if they did wait until June/July to refresh the MBP that would SUCK.

To all those waiting for the 2012 MBPs....

Isnt it quite clear that Apple will release the updated MBPs with Mountain Lion? And thats most likely sometime in late June and early July, everything points towards a mid year release, the supply chains, the timing of the IB chips, the sheer lack of any solid evidence floating around right now.

To top it off Apple isnt going to make you buy a brand new model only having to update the OS a couple of months later. I'm sorry to those guys waiting for an April/May release but its simply not going to happen.

No.
