To top it off Apple isnt going to make you buy a brand new model only having to update the OS a couple of months later. I'm sorry to those guys waiting for an April/May release but its simply not going to happen.

Wrong. Software can change. So, just like any other previous early hardware releases, if Apple chooses so, they can offer a free upgrade through the App Store as a download as they did for Snow Leopard users to Lion.

There have been numerous instances where a hardware refresh preceded a new OSX release by a few months in the past and in those instances Apple gave discounts to those who bought after a predetermined cutoff date.

One such instance comes to mind; 2009. IIRC, MBP refresh happened in June and then Snow Leopard was released in August. I recall I got SL for free due to my machine's purchase date.

When Apple says something is going to be released in "summer" it means the last day of summer. Don't expect ML until late August.

As to them being concerned about people buying new macs with an OS update around the corner: they did the exact same thing last year with Lion. Also, Lion was a huge leap. It was a brand new OSX version, and it even came with a new distribution. It switched to digital download only and came with no physical backup. Despite all this drastic change they still released new Macs (Feb MBPs and May iMacs) even tho people had to upgrade to a full new version. Mountain Lion is more of a small incremental upgrade to Lion; not a full new version.

Perfection right there. Please make it happen :apple::D

Hah, I remember these floating around last year. I love the black and would be cool if they went to liquid metal or some colored magnesium, but I'm not sure the shadow really makes sense in that shopped pic :)

Some more thoughts after reading some of the comments.

Dual HDD/SSD setup: I really don't picture this happening. They are great right now because SSD's are pricey in the large size, but moving forward their will be less and less of a need as cost goes down for SSD and capacity increases.

Now, I know they have the iMac with the ability to do that configuration, but it's really in a different market. With the iMac, the standard configuration is just 1 HDD with the wasted hard drive bay free for an SSD. Even though the 13" is labeled as a "pro" machine, we all know the dominating market aren't exactly pros users. The general consumer, not likely those of us on macrumors all the time, isn't going to want to manage which drive to add stuff to and mess with file placements between HD and SSD. I don't see that fitting in with the existing thoughtfulness of apple and their products.

If they try that same setup with a macbook pro, it's going to increase the cost of the laptop. It also wouldn't make much sense as a build-to-order option. They aren't going to want to ship the laptop with an empty slot for a hard drive. I've yet to see a laptop where they purposely would want empty space in the standard configuration. They will keep the SSD in one location and either shrink the size of the laptop, add battery or use the needed space for the cpu/gpu.

Redesign: I don't think there is really anything wrong with the design right now. If anything it would be a minor design change due to the removal of the ODD. I still imagine the aluminum enclosure, only with a few different line changes in the casing. I am sure there will be some complaints about the minor adjustments if it does come to fruition, but like the iPad...there's only so much that can change.

My wish list includes:

  • Dual drive - 128gb SSD + 500gb HDD

All in a snazzy new 13” form factor.

What……..up

i'd skip the 500gb hdd
saving

- weight
- energy/battery
- money

you can live with an external HDD or with the saved money, if you need, a bigger SSD or a second SSD, keeping high the performances

Isnt it quite clear that Apple will release the updated MBPs with Mountain Lion? And thats most likely sometime in late June and early July, everything points towards a mid year release, the supply chains, the timing of the IB chips, the sheer lack of any solid evidence floating around right now.

New models came out last year before Lion came out, and they also came out pretty quietly. Obviously the smaller amount of manufacturing needed to be done with MacBooks vs, idevices helps apple keep a better control of leaks. It makes little financial sense to release absolutely nothing in the second quarter. Expect new MacBooks within the next few weeks. Probably alongside 10.7.4.

The black MBP pictured is lovely. First thing that came to my mind looking at it was the finish that HTC give to their new One S phone.

Personally:

Basic form: Same keyboard and palm area design. Slightly slimmer overall, but no wedge design. Same finish to the alu.
Optical drive ... I think it'll go.
SSD/HDD ... optical drive space reduced to space for second hdd.
Space saved used for more battery space.
Retina display ... a build to order option and not standard.
15" will be announced / availble before 13". I dont think they'll wait to announce all as one.

It would be great to have a build to order option for the retina display but i really doubt it will happen since it takes a lot more power than a standard non retina display. Apple will either build the macbook pro with retina as standard or there will be none at all.

I tried to live with an external HDD on my last macbook. That solution, quite frankly, is terrible. I am now wiser to get as much storage as I need internally, and leave it at that. Dongles, external drives, and even network drives aren't as handy as having everything with you.

I think that retina displays - whenever they come - will come as standard, and not as an option. These screens are a big deal and Apple will want to market it, like it did with the iPhone 4 and the new iPad. And to keep them as an option is not a very good market strategy, IMHO.

As for the refresh, no new rumours so far. It's been less than 180 days since the last update. Maybe it will take a little longer...

Sandy spec bumps do not count as updates, It's been over a year.
Why don't sandy bridge updates count? XD

Also appleinsider.com has removed the "15 Macbook Pro constrained" from the top middle of the page.

I feel as though as we have a while to go yet. ;/

It's still there. Relax.

Liquinn, I'm curious about what your agenda might be that you feel the need to come into all of these threads and be the Debbi Downer, replying to every comment with "no no noooooo no! no! they're not coming out soon and I know this for a fact! noooo!". Are you just trying to temper your own high expectations, or what exactly is your motivation here?

Am I the only one praying the SSD doesn't become the standard on the new MBP? Sure have it as an option but don't make it the only choice. One of the biggest reasons I'm buying a new MBP is because my 2007 Macbook has a 120GB hard drive which is constantly full, so I'm looking at getting the 750GB current model.

I have an external hard drive, but it's annoying to have to connect it every time I want something off it. If they make it the only option I'll be looking for a refurbished 2011 model.
