Ok this is why I'm not going to bother wasting my time on macrumor's forums anymore. I create a thread about my thoughts on what the next 15" MBP will be like, and some "genius" moves it to an existing thread with 86 entries and counting, guaranteeing along the way that it will get lost in the discussions!

They probably just thought your post just fit the general discussion in this thread. No biggie.

Argh! I need a new MBP. Come on Apple, give us something. Supply of current gen MBPs are contracting at BBY, there are no more left in the DC, throw me a bone. Everyone knows something is coming . . . and soon. I need to know how much, so I can budget.

The way things are beginning to shape up, I would say the following:

May 2012 - updated iMac (silent update, no redesign)
June 2012 (WWDC) - OS X Mountain Lion announced, redesigned MacBook Pro released (or MacBook Pro/MacBook Air merge)
July/August - OS X Mountain Lion released
Seems reasonable, and probably correct!:)

This is pretty much my view on it as well.

Are you just going around to every thread and copy/pasting this nonsense?

MOD NOTE: We try to strike a delicate balance. If we allow too many related/similar threads to be active at one time we end up with people posting the same post to several threads. This also lets things get lost in the noise because you no longer know which thread to respond to one of those many duplicate posts with...

I agree.

I'm stupidly going to be ordering a MBP 15" Monday.

Ahh well, there's always something new just around the corner.

I was able to sell my 2010 mbp last week, so now I'm just stuck on this macbook air until I can order a new mbp.

I really don't mind waiting, but once fedex has it... argh I'm anal about checking that.

Not sure about this week, but I think it's possible. I wouldn't say any later than mid-May. Everything else I think is correct.

This would certainly fall in line with the IB chips that are/aren't released.

I drove past Intel last night and cursed them for only releasing the quad cores btw.

That's true but there is a lower wattage quad-core ivy bridge out that can be used in the 13" MBP

Yeah, currently both the 13" MBP's are running what I believe are 35W TDP CPU's, so the quad i7 IB with 35W could also be used.

Of course it's harder to say how this will apply with a redesigned case.

Why are the dual cores the keystone, here? It doesn't HAVE to be a dual-core, and in all honesty, Apple should make the 13 a quad. That would make it HIGHLY desirable and competitive in the 13 inch market segment.

It doesn't matter. IB processors can be "under-TDP'd" (if you will) by OEMs by about 8W.

I'd love a 13 inch quad core but as I've said, Apple likes to offer more than one processor for each model and there is only one 35W quad core from Intel.

Does anyone know if Apple has ever offered only one processor for one of the MacBooks/Pros in the past?

Think whether we will see a refresh in the next week/two weeks depends on whether Apple want to be generous and offer an i7 quad as standard in the 13", or use the 35w i7 quad as a BTO processor upgrade.

I hope it's the former. If not it will probably be released at WWDC, which will suck.

No they've always offered two options :(

I saw this earlier and I'm a bit confused on why it matters. Is it a cost issue? If the 13 inch gets a quad, and only a quad, is that a bad thing? Or is it just the thought that they may still wait for a dual core option?

Edit:Saw Pvisitors post.

I think now that the macbook air's are so competitive and they run only dual cores, why not leave the 13" with only one option: a quad core?

This would create a more distinctive line between the two in terms of power; a huge problem and common question here, "should i get a 13" mba or mbp???"

Apple would be able to Clearly distinguish the two machines to the "not so savvy" customers, that the mba is a DUAL core machine, and the mbp is a QUAD core machine... with a few extra bells and whistles of course!!!!! :D

What say you?

This is what I want to happen. Purely for selfish reasons in the hope it will be released earlier! Starting to lose faith now considering all is quiet on the western front.

It would definitely make sense as well. Assuming the Pros are going slimmer, there needs to be a way to distinguish the 13" from the overlapping Air. It's either that, or they're going to kill off the 13" Pro which would be stupid.

Truth be told I think the redesign shouldn't be a complete change. I think replacing the glass bezel/screen material with the one used in the Air (less weight), taking the ODD out and flash storage (with a HDD slot possibly still available), then slimming it down slightly due to the lack of ODD would be perfect. It would be significantly lighter and again not clash too much with the air design.

Then maybe release the 15" tapered Macbook Air at the same time of the general MBA refreshes. Sorted.

Does anyone think Apple may use this refresh to "lock down" the MBP as they did with the air?

Say solder the ram (offering you 8gb, while effectively making it non-upgradeable), offering HDD+SSD (but virtually impossible to swap out on your own), that limited quad-core processor (trying to balance processing power with energy management), maybe eliminate as much of the bezel as they can (to make it sleeker), and possibly retina display (with sufficient batt life to back it up, making use of the space savings).

I see that a lot of people on these forums opt for the pro primarily because of its upgradeability, effectively letting leapfrogging the air in terms of horsepower.

So what are your thoughts? Would you still go for a pro if it were just a soup'up air?
