It isn't the ODD that is causing the current thickness, its the ethernet slot. To be fair I don't see an issue with the current thickness of the MBP, if anything, the screen is a little thick, but that is all.

Ethernet slot is king. Sorry, but I like my 100 MB/sec transfers through my NAS using a gigabit switch. Good luck with craptastic transfer speeds on wireless... lol

If they add 802.11ac and/or a usb3/thunderbolt ethernet adaptor then there is no need to keep ethernet for the minority that use it

-AMD/NVIDIA: 50-50, I hope NVIDIA, just personal preference

Both brands are good so if each manufacturer produced chips of the same speed then personal preference would be all there was to choose.

However, by the numbers AMD GPU's are still the faster for a given TDP. If you take the max TDP the cooling can handle (currently 25W) and select the fastest chip that you can within that max heat load, then AMD chips come up faster each time.

NVidia are still using their fast and toasty method for making chips. Make it fast then figure out how much cooling is required to stop it catching on fire ;)

An AMD 7770M is (hopefully what they will use) around 25W tdp, to compete you would need an nVidia 650GT/660GT which are 35-45W TDP.

IMO, likelihoods on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the most likely:

Physical redesign with next refresh: 7

If there's a redesign,

Ivy Bridge: 10
New generation discrete graphics (HD 77X0M/GTX 6X0M): 10
USB 3.0: 9
Thunderbolt: 10
Slimmer and lighter: 8
ODD dropped: 7
Ethernet dropped: 5
FireWire dropped: 5
SDXC slot dropped: 1
Higher standard resolutions: 10
Retina displays (double current resolution): 4
All SSD standard: 5
Better battery life: 7
No more glass over glossy screen: 5
Soldered RAM: 3
Even bigger trackpad: 5
802.11ac Wi-Fi: 6

Actually, a higher resolution without a retina display is very unlikely. If Apple was to release a higher resolution laptop without doubling the current resolution, why would it adopt HiDPI in both Lion and Mountain Lion? A retina display would be even harder to achieve later if Apple just bumps screen resolution. Apple will either adopt retina displays or leave the current resolutions as they are.

I think I saw it.

I'm am not 100% sure, but I was at the Apple Store today, and there was one 17" MacBook Pro, closed, and hooked up in the corner. I opened it, and the screen was matted. I thought it was a screen protector, but there was nothing to peel off. It looked different from the other MacBook Pro's

:apple: iPod touch 4th gen. 32GB
:apple: iPad 3rd gen. 32GB

Are you sure you weren't just looking at a 17" with an anti-glare display? The first time I saw one, it looked like a matte screen protector. Lol. Just guessing though.

macbook pro 15" ivy bridge predictions

Based on extensive research on the current state of the laptop market, I've come to these estimates. In all honesty, this seems pretty fair.

  • 15" screen with retina, which equals about 2x the pixels of 1440x900
  • glossy is standard, but antiglare is optional and cheap to add
  • No superdrive
  • USB 3
  • 2 thunderbolt ports
  • No FW800 port, but there is an adapter to do FW800-TB
  • bigger battery to support the larger density screen
  • improved cooling due to the extra space and that ivy bridge runs cooler than sandy bridge
  • 8 gb of ram standard, 16 gb optional
  • 500 gb hd standard with a 256 or 512 ssd optional
  • a little thinner, but not much as ethernet still needs the height
  • amd 7770 GPU [1 gb for base model] [2gb for high-end]
  • 3rd gen ivy bridge quad core cpu

HP just announced new Pavillion laptops with Ivy Bridge. They start shipping May 8th. I have to believe we will see the MBPs and iMacs refreshed together this month, sooner than later because of WWDC. Waiting until WWDC just has no purpose. Apple doesn't care about waiting to refresh Mac hardware to coincide with a OSX upgrade; we saw this last year. Lion was a massive upgrade to OSX and they still released new hardware before it; they just offered free upgrades. ML is more of an incremental upgrade, not as dramatic.

I don't know if anyone has brought up the isight on the macbook pros, but I for one would like to see a 1080p isight in the next macbook pro. :)

Could that be at all possible? Are there any HP, DELL, ACER, ETC. laptops that have 1080p webcams?

Well my Sony Vaio C series laptop says it has an HD webcam, but I'm not sure if it actually is HD. When I compare the quality next to the iSight on my MBP, I can't really tell a difference, but that may be due to the bad lighting in the room lol.

Knock back the gpu to 512 standard, 1gb optional, and no retina display - may be higher res, but not 4x 1440x900 and maybe knock off the second tb port for good measure.

I have to agree. What purpose would it serve for them to deliver the new, refreshed MBP's at, or after WWDC? Furthermore, what benefit or purpose would releasing the new MBP's to coincide with the new OSX serve for them?

I simply don't see any advantage, or even strategic value from a marketing perspective, that Apple would have by delaying the release of the new MBP's, especially now that other companies have made their notes official like HP.

If the updated Macbooks aren't up to your liking just pick up a refurb at a reduced price. It's a win win.

Im swedish and refurbished are, as far as Ive been able to find out, not available in Sweden. I have to rely on the pathetic excuse of reduced prices that the premium resellers give.

The dual core variants of the Ivy Bridge chipset that's likely to be featured in the 13" model is being released in June.

Agree, releasing now(ish; certainly before 21st May) also gives them two bites of the cherry with the Back to school promos starting on 11 June (if I am not mistaken).

But there is no need to use the dual core processors in the 13", a quad core processor is available in the power range of the 13" and it is available now.

I would love a quad core chip in the 13" but unless they increase the size of the battery or go with the with the 3667U i7 model which isn't being released until June anyway, I cant see it happening with out battery life taking quite a hit.
