WANTS to be ?

They ARE an elite team, tied with Arizone leading the NFC.

That doesn't mean they haven't been slacking a bit in yesterday's game, but they do this on occasion when the win is easy.

When the pressure is on (like last week against NE), they are doing what needs to be done.

GB has not been a team that would just pile on. They just do whatever needed to win.

Pardon me. I come from a conference heavily laden with tough defenses.

Means nothing.

GB won their last Superbowl with a WEAKER defense than today.
Sure you gotta have SOME defense, but it doesn't always have to be top rated to get the ultimate win.

You know it helps, especially in Super Bowl who rewards great defenses. I will take a great top rated defense over a star quarterback any day of the week.

While I don't disagree, how is this relevant to my point about the Packers ?

Their D plays better than the year they won their last Superbowl, and Rodgers is playing better as well.

So what exactly is your point ?

While I like Rodgers I believe your D will let you down this year given who there is in the NFL.

We are in a different age of the most elite QBs we have seen. When you won the Super Bowl, and rightly so and convincingly so, that may as well have been a million years ago. Look how many QBs are over 90 in rating today.

While Rodgers is the best of the elites, that makes no difference if you can't stop the pass and/or run as well as Rodgers lights up the scoreboard. I also have doubts about Rodgers in the red zone and he's like our SF quarterback now who gets huge yards but has issues with turning easy passes into touchdowns. In the past we almost always won anyway but it's bitten us badly this year on O.

Yes Green Bay is good now and they were the year when they won the Super Bowl but look at who you are playing and how much better they are in comparison to what you faced back then. In 2010 I knew about Brees, Brady, Manning, and maybe the other Manning. But look at the list now with a whole bunch of new great QB names to add to the list. It's the golden age of great QBs unlike any time we have seen before.

I think while you are among the top of the NFC, I still see Dallas, Philly, (possibly) Detroit, and Arizona as scarier teams. But if this game was about who is the best QB, then GB has it all over anybody this season and any season in the history of football. His 106 career QB rating is totally off the hook.

I think a lot of people tend to look at the great passing of Green Bay but forget about the rest of the team. During Favre's peak, his team's D was just as stellar as him and I just don't see it this year. But being football, anything can change and you could have the best D your team has ever seen next year. I just saw the dominance of your D far more intact in your Super Bowl run than at any time.

But all this being said if GB wins the Super Bowl, I won't be shocked but it's more that there are so many great teams in the NFC who can go all the way this time around. Anyway, it will be a lot of fun to see who is the last man standing in the NFC. Sadly the Niners are most likely out of it but partially because there are so many great teams in NFC and NFC West seems hot and competitive with Seahawks or Cardinals likely being good candidates to win NFC.

We all know the Seahawks and their ability to win in postseason, but I think too many are downgrading the Cardinals but this team plays small ball so well and scrapes out win after win and teams like that, minus some luster, have won quite a few Super Bowls.

Until the Lombardi, the press will focus on Manning vs. Brady, and the arm of Aaron Rodgers to the exclusion of a lot of other great football.

Anyway, numbers here for Ds:

pretty much agreed. just like in baseball when good pitching beats good hitting...

I think people are being blinded by the great QB skills this season (especially) of Aaron Rodgers while downplaying that the team is a terrible #20 against the pass and even worse #25 against the run on D. This can't easily be indicative of a team that wins a Super Bowl.

In baseball I agree that all the glory goes to the hitting though we all know pitching/fielding wins championships, and I was the first one out there freaking out over Barry Bonds and just how rare his stats were, even with drugs being that many others were doping, too. But in the end the great pitching of the LAA Angels downed SF in the World Series. We had the great Pacific Sock Exchange of the Giants in 1989 which had all of the city seeing stars but Oakland's lights out pitching helped the A's sweep us in that World Series.

It's never popular paying more attention to football defenses and baseball pitching over handsome, commercial friendly quarterbacks and muscle bound MLB hitters, but in the end the quiet stuff that many find boring is what wins far more championships than the glittery stuff.

That being said I am very excited about possibly getting two great sluggers from Atlanta during hot stove time and even now I get excited about big hitters. When we lost Sandoval on the Giants most people were sad we lost a guy who hit three home runs in a single World Series game, but I was also sad we lost a totally amazing third baseman.

Rodgers is a great QB. I will give him that.

The Packers have some good receivers. I will give them that.

Now lets look at what happened last year with Manning and his high-powered offense ..

People were saying the same thing about Denver last year.

Then the made it to the Super Bowl.

They lost ..No..They got wiped out by a very strong defense. They lost 38-3 to the best defensive team in the NFL.

If Green Bay plays Seattle in the play-offs and Seattle keeps up it's dominant defense while staying healthy they don't stand a chance against the Seattle defense.

Their first game of the season they lost to Seattle 36-16.

Green Bay has gotten better while Seattle dealt with some injuries for 3-5 weeks.

Seattle is healthy ( on field and off ) now.

A very good defense will beat a very good offense.

They beat Philly at home 53-20. That score probably would have been different had they played in Philly.

Seattle went to Philly and won 24-14 IN Philly.

Sorry man. I just don't see Green Bay winning the Super Bowl if they have to play Seattle. IF Seattle is healthy.

First here in Niner land, I HATE Seattle.

But if you are healthy and with your D you can win it all but I still maintain, "Watch out for Arizona!". I think it's possible that if it comes down to Seattle versus Arizona in NFC Championship, that could be the two best teams in the NFL. I am so over starry eyed fans of great offenses and I don't know why people keep on keeping on about offense after what happened to Denver in Super Bowl. Denver was not only good offense, but most prolific offense in history of NFL and look what happened to them.

While I don't want to see Seattle win it, I think my top picks to win it all are on the NFC side (of course including Seattle) with exception of the Colts.

Ahh... Panda... he will love that short porch at Fenway... IMHO his power was incredibly sporadic though... might play out differently there.

The Ravens won two Sb's based on D. The Bucs beat my Raiders by having superior intel on D...

Seahawk D annihilated Peyton and Co.

Very often "D" is the key. But in SB's I don't think it is always the case.

Arizona beat St. Louis 12-6 but lost their starting QB.

If he's out for 2 weeks Seattle just might beat them in Arizona. So if Seattle can win at home against San Francisco the next week they visit Arizona for the winner takes the NFC West title game.

mmmmmm... i'm eating some crow this morning... thought for sure the rams would do them in. 12-6... i almost made my point.

and now the Cards have to rely on their 3rd string qb... seattle will beat them.

SEA should win the west... imho.

I thought so too. The Rams defense played well but when you start the second half with 5 (?) straight 3 and outs, I don't care how good a defense is, you're going to get tired.

Overall I think the offense played badly. The Cardinals didn't hide that they were going to blitz, yet the Rams didn't put in another blocker and when they did (Jared Cook) he/the Rams couldn't pick the blitz up.

Regardless of all that, the Rams' record is what I thought it would be this year. The last three games shows that the Rams have the defense to win, they just need some sort of offense and with rumours that Bradford is likely to come back (I hope with some sort of restructured contract), things are slowly coming together but next year, if nothing produces, everybody and I mean everybody (Les Snead included) needs to be put on the hot seat.

IF, I think the way both teams are playing Seattle is going to crush SF.

I have this weird feeling that the 49ers are going to get up for this game and surprise Seattle with a win over there....Of course I could be horribly wrong on this lol.

With the NFC West, you never know...:D

Isn't that the truth. Rams won a SB as well as Seattle, Niners have won, but now with 11 wins at this point, it's not out of the question that the Cardinals can get one.

It was a real ugly game but it's all about D and within their own locker room they are proud. I am sure the announcers thought that both offenses sucked, and America will again underestimate teams like the Cardinals, but it's the win in the end as long as people did a job akin to their talent level.

Well, of course they are. Lose this game and they will be out of the playoffs, guaranteed. The NFC is not going to tolerate a 7-loss playoff team, (except, of course, in the South, but SF is not in the South). If they are not up for this game, fighting tooth and nail, I would have to assume they are not interested in the post-season and Jim must have other prospects for employment lined up.

he he he...

i do too. but i bet it will lead to more bad things than good. SEA by 18.

With Cards at 11, it will take SF every game which they have to win to get the wild card. At 7 wins they can't do better than 10 wins so division is not an option. We also have to hope Seattle has a slide.

Well of course they are going to give it all they have. On the other hand Seattle can win the west by winning it's last 3 games. you don't think Seattle is going to fight tooth and nail for a possible #2 seed ?

[edit] With the GB loss to Buffalo Seattle has a chance at being the #1 seed [/edit]
