Should I use the dedicated GPU all the time then? I have the 455. Will it make the laptop run hot all the time and reduce lifespan? Btw it's always connected to AC power on my end...

Using dedicated graphics will not get rid of the lag in most cases. It is a software issue, the integrated gpu is powerful enough as it is.

The new 2016 MBPs don't have any lag compared to other Macs

That might be YOUR case, but unfortunately in MY case I do notice the ocassional UI lag, and certainly more so than in last year's model.

I own the 2016 15" MBP, BTW

A simple way to see the lag is to go to View -> Customize Touchbar in Safari, you will see a huge lag spike. Now try it with the dGPU and it is silky smooth. If this doesnt get fixed the Macbook is going back. The whole system is really laggy

No lag doing that for me. It is smooth. I get lag when minimizing and maximizing chrome, Xcode or any other intensive app you can find. I am on a 2015 15 inch mbp without the amd card. You should definitely return yours.

You are right, the dGPU is way smoother than the iGPU in this case. For other cases such as scrolling its fine though. Anyone have a fix for this?

I am the author of the youtube video demonstrating the UI lag.

I have been contacted by Apple engineer who is investigating the issue.
What if the issue is just an underpowered igpu? Would that be something they'd admit? To be honest, tho, I think the integrated gpu is fine.

If my old 2012 retina mbp had no gui lag theres not any underpowered igpu, the intel 530 score more in geekbench than the nvidia card in my 2012

Just think all hardware have crappy drivers now since the this 2016 model got rushed out

Can anyone with UI lag try and see if its still an issue in the new Sierra beta?

My non-tb 2016 13" has this UI lag and it's worse with the latest beta for 10.12.2

Could this mean that it really is a software issue then? Since yours got worse by an update. Im guessing the software developers at apple are just ****ing up

Could be just software or could be both not to sure but the latest beta is just really bad the whole system is super laggy, lucky I have the beta on a different partition so I can at least have a usable system with 10.12.1

How many times should we post about Quartz's overhead and ever increasing resolution screens before cognitive dissonance ends and people learn to read instead of nag?

Apple would prefer that you start using full screen modes and mission control. You'll notice how fast it is. They introduced it to break away from the ancient Xerox paradigm of resizing and dragging windows around and then like a wally complaining it's no smooth when you should be working. Full screen = focus mode.

A huge number of use cases include being able to see multiple applications at once, full screen & mission control is not a solution. Why would I swap to making all my applications full screen when all that does is make it harder for me to work, having to *constantly* swap between two desktops to compare or view updates between two different applications (e.g. code editor & terminal or code editor & browser or code editor & simulator, etc, etc).

I'd just like it if Apple sorted out the performance issues on retina Macs, you can load Windows 10 on the same machine and it's a much better experience in terms of UI performance.

Apple do seem to be on a mission of slowing things down the UI lag is really annoying as its not just in finder, just comparing benchmarks (its not scientific but gives numbers) the latest beta is a little slower I posted this in the beta thread.

If any of you own a MBP mid-2015 15", can you help with this test:
  • Open this in Safari - http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~axj/pub/papers/lambda-calculus.pdf on the native display (not connected to external monitor)
  • Do NOT zoom out or in after opening, it should by default expand to occupy almost the full width of the display.
  • Make sure you are on the iGPU (via gfxCardStatus or using Activity Monitor) and you are on the default resolution/scaling
  • Scroll up and down
Do you see any stutter as you scroll up and down? It's very very noticeable on the late MBP 2016 15"

I presume it's better if people mention their MacOS version too for reference and comparison.

I've mentioned it in other threads before: This stuttery scrolling only occurs when PDFs are opened in Safari. If you open the same ones in Preview, scrolling becomes perfectly fluid. Therefore it's something that can be fixed.

How many times do we have to repeat that using fullscreen mode isn't for everyone, in a lot of cases it is LESS productive.
Apple should have fixed this stupid lag issue already, there are no excuses after all these years, quartz or not.
