the up/down keys seem to be a function of the key's shape and less a true malfunction. I have tested several and they all feel similar. if you press them evenly with enough pressure they always hit. it seems like its only when you tap that you miss button presses.

Funny that you say that. I just replaced my laptop for the 12th time yesterday and the "U" button doesnt work 50% of the time. It either doesn't register, or it registers twice like that.
I currently have an external keyboard plugged in. I'm going to exchange it AGAIN on the 14th day. I will keep exchanging till they fix this problem.

Anyway, whatever it is...this is the first time I have this issue in 30 years of computing. Keys, if pressed, they should either register or not, they should not allow half presses.
I made my wallet decide for me. Returned for a full refund.
I bought a 2016 macbook pro (no touchbar) and it had four keys that would snap or click loudly when the computer warmed up. When it wasn't warm it would sound normal (although normal on this laptop is louder than my macbook air). Watching a 4k video on YouTube was enough get it warm enough to click. The hotter I got it, the more keys would snap. One of the most clicking keys was the e key. I exchanged it at BestBuy. The new computer only has one snapping key: the number 6. I'll settle because I like the mac, and I don't type 6 much.
I'm reporting it here because this sucks and I want to help draw attention to the issue.

I purchased a stock 15 inch 2.7/16/512 tonight for our business. Like the 4 I purchased and returned in November and December, this unit has the keyboard issue. This particular unit seems to have it on I, W and caps lock the most. As I type this, I'm running "yes > /dev/null &" 8x, the fans are spinning and I and W continue to click/stick. Manufacture date is 1/23/2017.
Compare this to the 13 3.3/16/512 I purchased on launch day with a manufacture date of 11/7/2016, that unit's keyboard is PERFECT! Not a single weird click ever, not even once, even when fully stressed.
I guess this one is going to go back too! It's a shame...

BTW if anyone wants a reliable way to reproduce this when needed -- plug your MBP into a secondary display (not in clamshell mode). That much heat, even at idle, causes my B key to "pop" all the time.
It is definitely heat related. And if you are not using a secondary display or thrashing the CPU, you're probably less likely to run into this issue. Mine happens much less when the machine is cooler.

My MacBook pro 2016 15in makes these random out of no where sound like a click. It sounds like a static thing or something. This issues has been a while, but it hits are the most randomest time. Does apple replace it?

someone on reddit says apple may have finally decided and settled on a solution. his keys were fixed by installing some sort of mini shims under the keys
There are some other threads about this you might be able to find answers in. (I don't know myself.)

I brought it in to genius bar and I hope they either fix it or they replace it with a new one. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It's not a keyboard click, but more of a static discharge randomly or somethign
My 13 inch without touch bar randomly makes a weird almost spark like noise. I also have the issue where certain keys make very loud clicks when the machine gets hot.
did anyone bring I in genius bar and figured anything out? Did the fix it or not or did the swap it out?
I'm currently stress testing the crap out of the CPU and GPU of my (first) replacement MBP.

I did take it to the Genius guys. We were able to re-create the issue. They offered to send in for repair which will replace the whole keyboard. I have issue with only one key "X". As I have read all through this thread that repair/replace will not work as they most likely will replace another defective keyboard which might increase the defect to more keys.
I asked if they can just replace the key which is problem. They could not as they don't have the keys with them yet. Asked me to check back later. After a week I called Apple support and explained this and asked if Apple has accepted this defect and if they are working on any fix to the keyboard. I provided this thread link to the support guy when asked. He said he will check with their engineering team and get back. Its been 10 days since then, i have not received any reply. I just sent the guy an email again today asking if they have any update.
I am hoping Apple accepts this as a defect and provide a fix. Then only all repair/replace will work. Until then you can try your luck with repair/replace or sit tight and wait for apple to fix the issue. I have chosen the later.
My keyboard isn't the issue, but more of random noise, kind of like a static pop. I bought it in and hope they can repair the issue.
Can someone explain to me why a logical person would go and exchange their MBP 10 times or more? When I bought mine, it had the clicking keys issue amongst other issues (battery not lasting more than 2h on external display)... I brought it back within a week as a "no thanks, go back to work and make something better".
I did some testing with iStat today.
No External Display - 95 F (CPU Proximity) / 130 F (Radeon GPU)
External Display Plugged In - 140 F (CPU Proximity) / 159 (Radeon GPU) <-- reaches these temps in about 10 minutes
With the display connected, the lowest I've seen it go is 138 F for cpu proximity and 149 for GPU. But the B key still makes the loud noise at those temps.
On both tests my machine was near idle. I had a few apps running, but I wasn't doing anything intensive.
With no external display connected, I don't really have any issues with the keyboard, so it's definitely heat related. It's only when the second display is plugged in and it switches from the Intel GPU over to the Radeon one.

I won't reply to this thread again unless the problem starts on this replacement, but should it start, I'll make sure and come back to report.
What a pain in the butt to be afraid of clicky keys. Such a basic feature to have a working keyboard. I consider myself lucky I only needed to go through one replacement.
