So, what's the difference between "scuttlebutt" and the rumor mill?

Rumor mill would be the usual industry rumor sources ... analysts, insiders, etc.

Scuttlebutt usually refers to talk around the office water cooler, or local bar. Maybe twitter these days, too.

Glass? Come on Apple. How about doing like Motorola and coming out with a virtually unbreakable screen instead.

I've spent tons fixing my dropsy daughter's iPhones.

Here is my thought, the next phone will be the iPhone 6se. Much like the 5se, that is the 3rd iteration of the iPhone 5. And the 2017 will be the true iPhone 7.

Th problem lies with not what you could, but what you should put on a phone. These you called game changers are only great in theory/pictures, but not in reality.
A fully glass phone offers little to no real purpose, as well as way too many disadvantages. You will basically see light from behind the phone which would hinder your ability to read whatevers on the screen itself for no good reason. Not to mention there must be some parts of non transparent material on the phone to accomodate batterys, ports and what not. Even if it is techonologically possible i cant think use of it for vast majority of users.
Making your phone thin as paper shares similar problems with the glass scenrio. No one has any use for a foldable paper thin phone, and neither would physics allow it unless we have mutliple breakthroughs with all aspects of technology, for a feature who one is asking for.
Projector is also almost useless, with other drawbacks. However its current technologically possible. Can you tell me any practical use for this feature though?
It is not your fault for wanting a phone like the ones you suggested. Internet and movies seem to portray these holographic and transparent screens as a easy way to demonstrate a futuristic look without thinking about the actual practicality of them.
The next breakthrough for phones, as I see it, is not on hardware. It will be software. And it is AI. And it wont be just applied to your phone, but everything in your life. Once a consumer level AI can understand and perform whatever you ask them to do, then that would be the biggest breakthrough of humanity of the last hundred years.

We don't know its practical applications until it actually exists.. The ability of an iPhone to project a 100 foot screen on a wall would be game changing. The ability of a phone (or a watch?) to project a hologram upwards from a screen would be game changing. In terms of the watch, it would allow a bigger screen to exist apart from a smaller physical device. That would be game changing. The ability to fold a large electronic piece of paper into your pocket that can wirelessly change whats displayed on the screen would be game changing.

How far away from all of that are we? I have no idea. Probably pretty far off, although I do remember seeing series of patents from Apple that at least shows they are/have been working on projection/holographic systems for quite a long time. I also remember I think Steve Jobs talking about the ability to roll out a foldable screen before he passed away.. So these are things they have at least considered and/or are working on currently. But to say that there are no "practical" applications for these advancements is rather silly. What is the "practical" application for having a touch screen interface? What is the practical application for having a non physical keyboard? Technological advancement finds a way of creating applications that make people wonder how they lived without it before it existed.

I'd be willing to bet that the 10 year anniversary is not the main reason (or anything close to it) why this phone is not coming until 2017. Apple is a publicly traded company focused on making profit. If they're not releasing this phone in 2016, it's because it's not ready for market in 2016. No rational company would deliberately sit on a product for a year like that, especially with sales declining.

Especally with leaks leaking and companies trying to rush to add the features first - like the pressure sensitive display which was added to an Android handset (sorry I can't remember the brand) a few months before iPhone 6S.

What about projectors and projection systems? Wouldn't that be a game changer? What about making the device a solid piece of glass, essentially making the entire phone completely clear when its not powered on? What about making the device as thin as a piece of paper, as well as making it flexible?

Those would all be game changers and substantial leaps in technology. Are we saying that those things are impossible? That they will never be done? Of course they will be eventually. Just a matter of when it happens.

So pretty much like the phone Tony Stark has been using in the last several Marvel movies?

There has got to be a way to pull off the speaker in the screen without requiring a hole. Proximity sensor would be easy. Camera lens seems tricky...but the TouchID sensor has to be the most difficult of all.
Speakers without a hole is not difficult. But it would definitely reduce sound quality by a ton, and there is pretty much no way around it. So when you think about the point of a phone (to call), it doesn't make sense to make any move to reduce the quality of calling.
Camera: impossible without sacrificing all the megapixels. Basically wouldn't be called a camera by today's standard.
Touch ID: Actually it has been implemented into androids phones since forever. fingerprint sensor in a phone is not hard, but reliability is so low that no one uses it.
And why would Apple want to sacrifice all these things for the display that is received as on of the best display out in the market? There is no benefit to have an edge to edge display for any practical reasons, just like how Samsung curve screen edge feature is pointless.

Yay, more BS threads with iPhone "rumors" with absolutely ZERO backing.
Maybe I should start releasing iPhone rumors, too, seems to be good business.

Would be nice, but nothing I need. I really needed a bigger screen, and now that I have it I'm happy. I have no plans on upgrading.

Ah but if this phone were real then you could have a 5.5" screen on a device the size of a 4.7" iPhone. I love the screen on my 6S+, but it feels very bulky after my old 4.7" iPhone 6.

I don't get the whole case thing. Never used one, not an issue. Most cases (other than hardcore work outside, otter box industrial cases) do NOTHING if the phone is dropped on its screen hitting a sharp heavy object at an angle (like a rock).

If you care about the back of your phone not getting a few dings, yeah a case might help. But in reality, it does little to protect from the screen cracking or shattering. Totally a myth. I don't understand the fascination with cases. They are not necessary or required.

Why would I want to make the sleek and light phone I just bought, heavier and thicker? I don't get the case thing people -- I just don't. Do people put cases on their apple watches -- no! The whole case thing just happened because of antenna gate -- that's over.

No, antenna gate had nothing to do with cases.

Everybody uses their iPhone in a different way and there are some very good cases around.
But they should be combined with a screen protector. Again some very good ones around.

It's not about heavy and thicker , it's about protecting an item that costs a lot of money.

iPhones are very slippery. Daily use with sweaty fingers eventually attacks the aluminum finish (Makes it glossy)

My daughter works in a very dusty environment (Woodshop), so she needs the phone dust proof.

Some people work around wet areas, splash proof needed. My 4 S with a case fell into a vat of alcohol. Pulled it out quickly , was enough protection to keep on working after it dried out.

There are too many reasons where a case is needed or at least would protect the phone.

Do people put cases on their Apple watches - Yes! Sometimes just bumpers.

I see plenty of broken phones every day. I guess people who are against cases, just don't care if their phones break and they have to shell out more money.

And, as you write: You don't get it!

Do we think its impractical/impossible? Technology will obviously advance tremendously over the next 5 years. Its indisputable. It always happens. Human beings are not going to just stop advancing technologically. The question is how far will be the advancement, and how soon can some of this stuff actually be implemented into consumer devices.

I really don't understand the appeal of edge-to-edge display. It seems as much of a gimmick as curved TVs or motion controls for gaming last gen.
If anything, I would find it annoying to always be pressing something by accident everytime I use my phone or having to deal with app freezing because the new Home software button is not functioning while it's happening.

And this is the iPhone that will bring me back to the days where I was actually excited to stand in line 24 hours before the release. This is where Apple should be by now. iPhone 7 is nothing
More than a bridge to this rumored design.

An all-screen front would also be a good reason for the return of the glass rear o the device. It would simplify the look of the device beautifully.

I don't see how making a phone smaller, while keeping the screen size large, is a gimmick.

I have an expectation that Apple should be able to produce software that can detect accidental/incidental contact on the edge of a screen (which already exists, so why can't Apple use this and improve on it?), and to be able to problem solve their way into using the power button as a hardware backup to the software home button.

I have wanted a phone like that for years, but the phone on the picture looks too oblong for my taste.

I would like Apple to just cut off the area that is not a display, at the top and the bottom. I don't mind if it gets a few millimeters wider.

Finger print sensor could be put on the rear side. Most people have their index finger over there anyway.

I don't think that the edges would be used to press anything. They could easily be used for notifications, or for information such as time, date, and battery, or maybe the last caller etc.

Surprised this story wasn't posted sooner. Heard this over the past weekend. I feel confident the serious redesign is coming next year and this fall is just a battery/camera upgrade with identical form factor.
