I find all this quite bizarre as I thought this phone would be named the "3rd version" of the iPhone 6. All this talk of the 3year cycle made me believe that so I was surprised to see this small step as the 7th gen phone.

However. If these rumours regarding the iPhone 2017 (surely it won't be the iPhone 7.5 model) are true then I'll hold out for that one.

What a mad numbering scheme they have now. No courage to call this latest model what it is.

No doubt it was always Apple's intention to have this design after the iPhone 6 design, but they just couldn't do it in two years and had to stretch the iPhone 6 design out to last three years. Nothing about being lazy or not innovating.

Apple hires more lawyers than engineers. If that was the other way around,
maybe, just maybe, they would be able to make a great iPhone sooner,
iPhone being their ONLY product...

pretty sure there will be other manufacturers trying to get this out before apple does.

It takes an enormous amount of planning even at this early stage, so I imagine there are over 100 people inside Apple who have know about the design. Starting down from Ive and the design engineers, to the mechanical engineers working on the body, to the electrical engineers working on the screen and embedded buttons, to the software engineers working on the OLED display controller and iOS changes, to the business and logistics employees working on the deals to secure the OLED and parts needed, to the marketing people already working on how to position the premium model, etc.. etc.. etc..

You have to wonder how "ready" it already is? I mean we usually see pictures cases (to show holes) and back plates of new iPhones in the early part of the year and they are almost never wrong come launch time. The first rumor of the headphone jack being removed was in November of 2015 I think.

They made a big deal about the button this year. They're just going to get rid of it?

edit: Oh hold up. 'Built in'. Okay. That makes more sense.

edit2: " will be completely gone in 2017, and fused with the OLED display, along with Touch ID functionality. "

I'm done.

I hope for next year that Apple will work with SolidEnergy's new Gen 3 Lithium batteries that last twice as long. Between a 10nm chip process for the A11, possible next-gen Fusion energy improvements, and Gen 3 Lithium batteries, they could probably make the the next iPhone nearly half as thick and still offer several hours of extra battery life. I'd be all for that, especially as lighter devices are less likely to break when dropped. My problem is when they make devices thinner without increasing battery life. But if the iPhone 7 numbers are to be believed, they're already in a pretty good spot now.

The biggest issue that remains for thinner iPhone devices is that stupid camera bump. Will they still keep making phones thinner but with an ever-increasing bulge on the back? I hope they're able to figure something out with micro-lenses so they can shorten the focal length. If they must have a bulge, it would be great if they could at least center it. But then it might look too much like an Android device? I always thought it strange that as much as Apple talks about symmetry, all the camera stuff is off to one side.

As for the display tech, I hope they skip OLED altogether and go micro-LED, or MLED, or is it lowercase mLED? Whichever. That sounds a lot more promising, but it depends on if they can get them to scale to production in that time frame. Ming-Chi Kuo is pretty good at predicting things based on the supply chain, so it's pretty unlikely right now.

As for the curved edges of the display? I hope Samsung sues them over that because Apple would be ripping off their "iconic" design and I really don't like displays like that. I was playing around with a friend's Galaxy Note 7 the other day (risky, I know, but I didn't get burned or explode) and I just really still don't like my UI rolling off the side of the display. It's really annoying and distracting. I'm all for the curved edges like the current iPhone has, but please don't bleed the UI off the edge of the device. It's a huge pain. Don't get me wrong, I think the display on the Note 7 is gorgeous (the contrast is amazing), but the curved display just seems like a gimmick to me.

As for the reduced bezel—I must say I'm pretty stoked about that. I hope they make the new iPhones shorter and the display a little wider. I think 5" would be a great dimension for the mid-size iPhone, and 6" for the Plus. They wouldn't be physically bigger than the current devices—you'd lose a little height since the iPhone forehead and chin is so huge—and you'd gain a little extra real-estate for the display.

There's going to be a lot of people who can't afford a new phone every year who are already regretting buying the iPhone 7 before they've even bought it!

Apple is supposed to be the leader when it comes to design. If you compare the Note 7 to the iPhone 7 plus, the iPhone looks so dated in terms of design. TF is up with those bezels Apple? I'm keeping my 6 and thinking about switching to the Note 7 until the next iPhone is out.

I'm betting ceramic as the main material and iPhone X as the name
Why X? They removed the X from OSX and just call it MacOS....

iPhone 8. As in: this iPhone 8 into my bank account because I needed to have it.

I feel like if this phone does exist next year it will be a single model phone released alongside a 7s and 7s plus before all models switch to the design in 2018. At this point if all phones are like described expect to see a price bump.

I'm willing to bet that after the iPhone 8 hits pockets everywhere, there will be many people who say that the iPhone 7 design was better, just as people sung praises to the 5S design after the 6 was came out.

I'm not sure that I want an all glass front. How will you put a case on it. I'm a tight wad and still have my iPhone 5s. I was going to wait but maybe I'll get a 7. Actually, my best move would be to wait for the 8 and then buy a 7 if I prefer the 7 vs the 8.

Realistically, the reason I prefer iOS vs Android devices is that Apple keeps my equipment relevant a lot longer than Android manufacturers do by updating the OS. My iPad mini is showing its age but it has had a long and useful life so far. The only thing my iPhone 5s doesn't have is Apple Pay which is the only reason I'm considering a phone upgrade.

Nice, let's start rumors before new phone is even out. Ya'll got any of those mac rumors/leaks?

This is exactly why I opted to keep my 6s Plus and forgo the 7 Plus. I really hope Apple brings back the headphone jack, but I highly doubt they will. The lack of a headphone jack is a deal breaker for me.

Why is it a deal breaker? Have you tried bluetooth headphones on the 4.0 spec? I've been using them this year, cheap ones at that, and I won't go back to wired. I suspect that good ones from Apple or others available next year will be much better than what I'm using now.

No doubt it was always Apple's intention to have this design after the iPhone 6 design, but they just couldn't do it in two years and had to stretch the iPhone 6 design out to last three years. Nothing about being lazy or not innovating.

According to Walt Mossberg that is exactly what happened

Don't forget wireless charging that works from a greater distance than existing wireless charging implementations. This way you don't need to plug the phone into anything when using a CarPlay 2 compatible automobile. ;)

Ceramic? The ceramic for the Watch takes a long time, if Apple's marketing materials are to be believed (they say it takes days to make the case). If true, that's unworkable for iPhones at this time.
The ceramic Apple Watch costs four times as much as the aluminium model so it's probably a bit too expensive to use on the larger iPhone case.
^This.
As soon as I saw the ceramic watch I thought, "Well, there is next year's iPhone material". But maybe only as a Premium 10th Anniversary Edition (with a premium price to match).
I agree that the next major release of iPhone will be made of some type of ceramic. (Series 3 of iPhone 6 aka iPhone 7 is the end of the line for the current generation of iPhone design. Jony Ive hints in the iPhone 7 Design video that iPhone 7 will be the last in the current design language — “When complete, iPhone 7 is the most singular, the most evolved representation of this design.”)

I completely disagree that ceramic is unworkable with phones or is too expensive. Ceramic glass was actually used in parts of the white iPhone 4/4s and white/silver iPhone 5/5s models. Not to mention it is possible to source really inexpensive ceramic, one example being ceramic bakeware. In fact, a few years ago, it was mentioned that "ceramic device housing could be used in low-cost iPhone" http://appleinsider.com/articles/13...vice-housing-could-be-used-in-low-cost-iphone

Ceramic in iPhone 8 isn't a cost issue, nor will a ceramic iPhone be a unique special edition model. iPhone in ceramic will be the standard design going forward. Apple has a long establish relationship with Corning who work with ceramic glass, unsurprisingly they even make glass ceramic bakeware. This is a case of using old established ideas in new products like iPhone.

(Just on Apple Watch Edition, it is unnecessarily expensive for the materials used. The website marketing should be viewed as just that, plain old marketing spin. The website states: “Apple Watch Edition case takes days to make”. That might be true. Just the same though, it takes about 24 hours of labor to manufacture iPhone, it takes up to five days to make a single iPad. Our assumptions are that these devices just come to be in a matter of short moments, but they take time, and they have many steps to being made. Apple Watch Edition is not particularly special in this regard apart from its bold price that it attempts to command customers to pay.)

There has been discussion about a zirconia ceramic being used in iPhone dating back as far as 2010/2011. There is also an Apple patent pointing towards an iPhone device with a ceramic housing. I wrote briefly about this last week after the patent came to light ow.ly/yBib3045EG5

There will be no iPhone 6 series 4. An all-new iPhone design made from ceramic glass will be with us next year, in a range of colors as usual.
