Interesting to see how whatever they come up with plays with cases.

Anecdotally, I see case use at- I dunno, at least 2/3 of users. And my iPhone 6 has weathered 22 months a lot more gracefully than the 5 it repaced, and I suspect that's because of the case (in fact, I increase my acceptance of the sacrifices Apple makes to get "as thin as possible" by thinking they make the core thin enough that cases can be like an optional but integral part of the phone itself - even with a sturdy case you still have a relatively thing object)

But that said - Apple, and the companies it has influenced, has always been a balance of pure, designer-indulgent/showoff beauty and practicality - and the devices would not be as good if there wasn't some element of the former, but now it starts to feel like the inmates are running the asylum.

We live with worse batteries because our devices are so thin. Is that because thinness sells, or because that's how designers look impressive?

Maybe some generation I'll experiment with Android... I'm definitely locked in, not only because iOS is generally superior and better integrated, but because I'm lazy about relearning things and finding apps.

I'm betting ceramic as the main material and iPhone X as the name
This. As soon as I saw that ceramic Watch it was clear this material would be used to solve reception issues. NO MORE UGLY ANTENNA BANDS!!!

And yes I hope they do something about the nonsensical naming system they've carried on far too long. I don't see a need for numbers, just go back to calling it "iPhone."

I'm holding out on my 5S for now. Glass on ceramic OLED iPhone? Took a while Apple, but you finally (will do) something to earn my money.

Exactly. It's not as simple as drawing it on a white board and sending it to China to be made. The engineering process takes time, especially when you want to do it right. Then they have to secure all the parts and even create new manufacturing processes to actually build the device. It's a big project.
I have no insight into how Apple does this, but here's a link to a YouTube tour of Microsoft's Surface design lab. It's quite an education. MS can build working prototypes in the lab, using the same machines that their Chinese factory uses for manufacturing. The manufacturing is all software-driven, so they simply send the designs directly from lab to factory. They can (and do) tweak the designs in mid-cycle, as needed.

I would be very surprised if Apple is any less sophisticated.

i kinda hope that none of the parts leak for it, i wanna be genuinely surprised when Apple unveils it during the keynote (assuming that the iPhone is getting a redesign in 2017)

So where does the front-facing camera and speaker for phone calls go exactly?
Dongles for that! Magical.

Can't I enjoy my iPhone 7 for 10 minutes before I read stories like these?

This is Tim's Apple. I don't see him pulling it off with some many features.

He will either the rise adverse route to make it easier on the supply chain. This way he can maximize profits even if it means holding back features on the phone.

Absolutely not. Part of the experience of buying new Apple products is that empty feeling that comes with knowing they won't be the latest and greatest anymore in the blink of an eye.

I envisage that Apple will prove that they can innovate and that the iPhone 8 will be more than just a design change. I am pretty sure that they will have been working towards this phone for at least the last two years. They will have worked out a way to embed the front facing camera and home button within the glass. Add to that complete wireless charging at we would expect wireless charging to be and its going to be an amazing product.
The cost would be high though...for 2017 at least.

Why is it a deal breaker? Have you tried bluetooth headphones on the 4.0 spec? I've been using them this year, cheap ones at that, and I won't go back to wired. I suspect that good ones from Apple or others available next year will be much better than what I'm using now.

I have a pair of Jaybird BlueBuds X, which are decent. I use them exclusively at the gym and my Shure SE425 buds everywhere else. The sound quality of the Shures is worlds better than the BlueBuds. As a musician/somewhat of an audiophile, this is extremely important to me. Also, Bluetooth headphones are yet another thing I'd have to worry about keeping charged. If the battery dies during my 90 minute commute to/from work, there goes my music!

Wait for the 8. Might be great.

2017 will be a bigger breakthrough year than 2016. This year is more S refinements from both Samsung and Apple. S7 edge was not much different than S6 edge. Note5 to Note7 and 6s to 7 isn't much of a leap either. 4K displays will be standard with Android.

Samsung Galaxy Wing (Project Valley)
Samsung Galaxy S8
Samsung Galaxy Note8
iPhone 8/8 Plus

I like Apple trimming the top and bottom bezels but that edge to edge could be awkward. Didn't like it when I had a Sharp Aquos Crystal.

The Jony Ive dream phone design using glass again.

4K displays? When will people realize it's the density that actually matters and 4K is useless in handhelds??

That's my guess. I think they will rename it Apple Phone. I'm skipping the iphone 7 and most likely picking up an S7 this week. Figured I would try something new as Apple really has failed to keep me as a customer.

im all for smaller bezels, but no bezel at all. no thanks. i want to be able to grab my phone without touching the screen and clicking things.
