As far as I know, there are no EU tax laws regarding the VAT. It is an usual misconceptions that EU regulate taxes in member countries. For non-EU readers, we pay the taxes according to the country we live in. Then a fraction of the taxes is payed by the respective country to EU for various benefits so some of these money is going back to the countries.
There is a minimum value set for VAT by the EU of 15% (where 'set by the EU' means the EU member states together agreed on it). Though this 15% was pretty much the lowest rate within the EU when the directive was drafted. Additionally member countries can set lower rates for groups of products (eg, food is often taxed lower).

It’s not only about your local tax but import duty tax on foreign goods. Here in India it ranges from 20-400% to protect local companies. The X costs $ 1450 in India.
Since the iPhone is manufactured in China, import duties are also applied when it is sold in the U.S. (though they are fairly low).

I was also in the mindset of wishing for a Plus model of the iPhone X. However, in the 6 months of ownership I've got used to the size. The screen width is a bit of a concern but I'm more worried about the weight of the upcoming Plus variant. Pocketability is much improved on the 'X' coming from the Plus models.

If that's the case I'll probably hold off until 2019 if hardware changes are (as rumoured) minimal. Hoping iOS 12 makes all the difference to UI etc. Wonder what the exclusive feature on the plus model will be to encourage upgrades

Too big. One big hand won’t be enough to navigate. I barely can on the 8 Plus. If you want a big display for your games or movies or whatever get an iPad, TV, laptop, desktop... This the bigger the better trend should stop.

I'd have to actually handle it in person before I could pull the trigger on it, but provided there's feature parity between the upcoming 5.8 and 6.5, I think I could actually go to the larger phone if it's pretty much the size of a Plus.

At least if I can get a slim yet protective case. Hmm.

I predict a better camera. And faster processor.

Most likely only a slight improvement if anything over the standard lens sensors on the 8+. A10 with the usual accompanying components. Most likely 3g RAM. 32/128 storage options. Display will be on par with an 8+. There most likely will be come savings in construction as well through process engineering.

I disagree with comments that this is for women. I know men who will replace their 7+ with this at a good price point. China will be a good market for this. IMO, it follows the current change in strategy by Timmy to go back to gaining market share. If this device is priced as aggressively as I anticipate it will be the #1 seller by a good margin.

There will still be plenty of iPhone choices for those willing to spent $1,100+ for a device. It will be extremely interesting to see the entry pricing of the 5.8" iPhone X .V2 given the new attempt to gain market share over unit margins. iPhone X SE pricing makes me nervous. :apple:

Agreed. iPhone X is the biggest one I want to carry in my pocket now.
I managed OK with the iPhone 7Plus but the X is much better to carry.
My concern is if it’s bigger and heavier than an 8+ (which it most likely will be?) that’s really beginning to stretch pocketability and portability. I’m hoping the XI will have caught up to the traditional plus size models in terms of battery life... the X isn’t too far off what the 7 plus gives you now, albeit the 7 plus is the worst performing of the four plus size devices they have released so far for battery life.

Bigger bigger bigger

I'm still waiting for smaller&conveniant....
Am i the only ohne?!?

Nope, same here. Wonder when Apple will start selling $400 men’s purses for these giant phablets. I can’t honestly say I care though. I used to like having the newest phone bc it was actually the better phone. Nowadays, as a former owner of the 10 and current owner of thr 8, i would argue the 8 is the superior device.

It's all about the pricing. Apple need to stop charging European's more money than US costumers. In most places the basic iPhone X starts at almost $1400 dollars. That's ridiculous.
And Europe needs to stop charging too much taxes and tariffs. It goes both ways.

Pretty easy guesses here, exactly what I was expecting. Still not sure I want to go with a larger phone, but depends on the added features.

Horizontal Face ID should’ve been included in this version. You can unlock your phone at any direction with TouchID.... just saying...

Isn't that mostly because of VAT? In the US, sales tax is 7-9%. I thought in Europe, the government imposes almost a 20% VAT on Apple. Selling at the "same price" as US would result in making less money in Europe.

Europeans have fancy consumer laws. As a result, Europeans get to pay fancy prices.

Apple actually charge about the same even thou they provide far better service in the EU.

People just likes to blame Apple for socialism..

Let's hope that the 6.5" comes in at $1149 for 512GB. I can see Apple doubling storage for this years handsets to match iPad Pro's capacities. Makes sense...

. . . it's cheaper to fly from say London to New York (you can get return flights for less than $400) and hop on a coach to Delaware.

Have you actually done this yet?

Sounds like a fun way to buy Apple products.

So you’re saying better consumer rights are a bad thing?

Hmmm . . .

Have to agree with this. I just picked up my 7 Plus again from the bottom drawer. Man, that thing is big. One-handed usage is impossible. The X treads nice middle ground.

...well, if Apple can't figure out how to make a product which they will guarantee for 2 years but other manufacturers can, and do it for less money to boot, Apple will lose out since they would clearly not be good enough to do business in the European market.

European consumer-protection laws are not especially onerous; they exist to safeguard the consumer against faulty products or misleading advertising. If Apple does their job properly, those laws and regulations should not add significantly to the cost of any products - not more than the usual regulatory alignment they have to do all over the world.

Again, other manufacturers manage it just fine. If there was some particular burdensome regulation(s), you would hear specific calls across the industry.
