That design looks terrible! Why make it stick out so far from the wall? Especially with the wobblyness inherent in American and continental European plugs.

Oh my goooooosh just freaking abandon Lightning already! How dumb are these Apple engineers??? Just give the iPhone USB-C!

They won’t abandon it yet. Clearly Apples engineers have made millions for this company with its design and functionality. Lightning will be here to stay for a whole, Its a proprietary method that becomes an integral part of the iPad and iPhone, including the AirPods. It binds the consumer to their ecosystem, not to mention Apple has a small monopoly invested with lightning and third-party competitors Alike that are also invested into this.

The 5-W iPhone charging 'blocks' have quite different shapes around the world, depending on the type of electrical plugs used in the respective countries. Below you first see the (North) American version, than the British version (following the rather bulky shape of their plugs) and finally the ones used in most of Europe (Europlug) as well as Africa and Asia:

Thanks, good point. I've updated the post to clarify that the square shape mention referred to the U.S. version of the power adapter.

The 2018 iPhones - especially the Plus - are obviously gonna have big batteries!

Makes sense too, as we’re all addicted to our phones and long gone are the days when we could expect them to last a full day without a top up charge.

Macbook cables are flimsy as all hell.
I have never had frayed cables. Ever. I also don’t yank them, and I wrap electronic cables like I wrap my XLR cables... How they’re supposed to be wrapped. Believe it or not there is a way you’re supposed to wrap cables for long life and minimal wear. This is where I say, “You’re managing your cables wrong.”

Not really, I much prefer lightning. But I'd be very glad to see a 18W Usb power adapter in the box. It's ridiculous to ship a $1000 phone with a slow USBA charger.
What advantage does lightning have over USB-C? I would love for the iPhone to go full on USB-C as it would mean you can use one cable to charge all your devices (in my case MacBook, iPhone, Nintendo switch and others). It's awesome.

why do you prefer lightning over USB-C for the phone-side port?

That's your opinion, not reality. If phones were "purely a commodity" Apple wouldn't have the success. People see value in iOS and the hardware and software support.

Frankly, I don't think iOS runs slowly on older hardware, but you or me can't speak to that. I do know a lot of iPhone 6, 6s, and 7 still are being used.

yes. i have a 6s and iOS 11.3.1 is running smoothly.
i would also say that usually each new version of iOS usually runs not so well on any older device for that 1st new version itself, but very definitely it catches up with later revisions.
usually the guidelines that apple gives are spot on: when they dont make available new software versions for older models its definitely because the user experience (and or security) could not be maintained on those older devices.
its usually a safe bet if you buy the top of the line model that that device can still be a really good and fun device to own 3 years later and maybe even 4 years.

tl;dr: seriously apple, just change to USB-C sooner rather than later, and maybe we'll forgive you for lightning.

I welcomed Lightning when it was first introduced... it was better than MicroUSB and the 30-Pin connector.... however, with that said, as everything seems to be going USB-C, including your MacBooks... it's becoming harder and harder to stand behind Lightning.

BS. MacBook cables are **** and so were the old Powrbook ones and end pieces. Utter pieces of ****.

It's irrelevant to bring up what other competitors do because they are not offering the same product or value story.

Android could offer a $50 bill in every box too and it's still garbage.
So you’re defending Apple for being cheap because you don’t think any other products are great so why should Apple try anymore?

Thanks for th laughs!

They’d better. I use the iPad brick to charge my phone because it’s so much faster. Even brings a dead phone back to life faster.

Agreed. For the money they charged for the iPhone X that should have come with these accessories as well.

That dinky 5W charger was designed for what? The iPhone 4 with its tiny battery? Battery capacity has doubled since then (on Plus phones) - yet we still get a 5W charger in the box. Why? Because it's small and cheap and keeps the iPhone box smaller - so more iPhone boxes can fit on a pallet. When you're talking about literally tens of millions of iPhones being sold, a bigger shipping box is a very big deal. The 5watt charger is included because it saves Apple money, not because it's the ideal charger for the battery.

Even if my next iPhone comes with a faster charger, I’ll likely still use my 5 watt version for daily overnight charging because I’ve read it’s better for the battery.

Android is not garbage, I had all the iphones since the 3, and last year switched from the iphone 7 plus to the Note 8 because I didn't like the X. Guess what, the Note 8 is the best phone I ever had so far. Android has come a long way, any flagship phone these days won't disappoint. You need to get with the times, seems like your still stuck in the past.

This should have happened last year with the iPhone 8 and especially the iPhone X. But no, they have to include the old USB-A cable so you need an adapter to connect it to a MacBook!

Apple can keep talking about how they are courageous to remove the headphone jack and push everyone forward using better connectors but they should really not half-ass the transition to USB-C without any good reason. The real courage would be to switch the lightning port to USB-C. Not only do we need two charging cables now for iPhone/iPad and MacBook but there is also no way to connect the lightning headphones to a Mac.

I am so lucky to still have my iP4s earbuds to connect to my MBP! ;/s

Apple doesn’t hire dumb engineers. There’s a reason why they’re going with C that we just aren’t thinking of. And no, it’s not the pennies they get from the MFi program.

Given the crapfest that is the current state of usb C, I think I would rather stay with lightning for the near, indeterminate future.

What? You mean you don’t like to play Russian Roulette between your phone and laptop?

Unless you're using some hokey off branded peripherals, your mouse, keyboard, and gamepad are still USB A.

And as I said earlier, Lightning poops all over USB-C when you take durability and size into account.

I was more referring to the things I regularly connect/unplug and hook up to different devices. I couldn’t care less about what connector my mouse and keyboard uses but going forward Type-C would be nice on those too.

I’m not too sure on your last statement.
My lightning connector wobbles in its socket while my USB-C devices have always been solid. My MacBook has been yanked while plugged in a few times and still connects up perfectly. Yet my lightning cable has a lot of wiggle.

Type-C is the future, ever other connector should just die off.

Finally, 18W charging. Welcome to 2015!
Umm, it’s 2018 dude.
[doublepost=1525310231][/doublepost]
and where the hell is airpower? still not on the market...
I’m beta testing one right now. Soon.
[doublepost=1525310302][/doublepost]
My Huawei P10 comes with fast charger. If my phone is almost empty, top for 30 minutes, it goes back to 80%. See the point of fast charge? It is ridiculous that almost 1000 dollar phone ( iPhone 8 here in Canada cost 929 before tax, 1300 for iPhone X) that has fast charging capability and not include a fast charger
You do realize this is an Apple forum, right?
[doublepost=1525310332][/doublepost]
iPhone 7 doesn't have 18W capability.

Only newer models like iPhone 8 and X have a USB Type-C Port Controller.
Time to upgrade for me then.

Let's also grow up and not act like the iphone and ios are inferior to Android in every single facet of a smartphone. Simply isn't true. Notifications and assistants, as an example, are clearly better on Android at the moment.

As a long time Apple and iphone fan I'll actually take the current user experience of Android over ios. Problem is there isn't a Android phone or smartwatch that I like at the moment.

Let's also be real, both get the job done and done very well at this point in the smartphone product cycle. It really comes down to what features you prioritize and personal preference.
You are a very confusing person. Do you like iPhone or not? If not, whey are you here?
[doublepost=1525310618][/doublepost]
I don’t disagree, but I have charging blocks that I bought almost ten years ago and they still work today as new. Seems like a minimal loss to me... I have gone through several Anker dual USB-A bricks in the last several years because of manufacture quality.

Quality over quantity.
Agreed. I’ve stopped buying third party charging accessories and buy only Apple because I know their products work.
[doublepost=1525310895][/doublepost]
I don’t care if Galaxy S9 is failing. It does not tell you anything. Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi have seen record growth as well.

Oh my the way, my Huawei Mate 10 has fantastic battery life as well. Easily last me two days without charge.
You have supported the wrong company.
[doublepost=1525311047][/doublepost]
iPhone does not have best battery life at all. When I was with my iPhone 6S, I charge twice a day. I can wake up at 7 and by the noon, my 6S will have less than 20% battery. The battery life is so crappy, Apple has to make the stupid battery case.
What the heck are you doing to that poor iPhone?
[doublepost=1525311190][/doublepost]
That I don’t care. I don’t even care if Apple goes bankrupt, that does not affect me.

By the way, what OS do you think Xiaomi, Huawei or Oppo use? Answer is Android
If Apple went bankrupt you and the rest of us would be in a world of hurt.
