I got my hands on a 65W Lenovo USB-C charger, going to leave it plugged in and see if the same thing happens. I guess it could be some Apple charger issue but unlikely. Worth eliminating it though. I still have my Genius Bar appointment tomorrow.

Anyone know if the 13" has shown this issue as well?

I did get told off a little for not including my charger when I returned laptop, if they can't repro issue with their own chargers, at Apple then they'll have me ship charger too..

It went to ireland to be investigated, they're shipping me a replacement laptop.

I think this is what will happen with mine. The problem is I live in London but I am moving to France on August 11th so I think I might be better off getting this sorted once I get to France as there is an Apple Store in Lyon near where I will be living. I'm not sure how Apple will go about shipping me a replacement to another country?!

I bought mine in UK and am now in Finland, they had the laptop express DHL'd to ireland, and are shipping replacement to me here.

With your situation you should be able to drop the laptop off at apple store and get replacement there and then if not a BTO option, I'd hope?

Is at least what it sounded like they'd have liked to do if was possibility.

But, if there's store in France, they can arrange it via Apple store there, too.

BTO unfortunately. 2.6 i7, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 560X. They don't have any 32GB models in stock annoyingly. I think I will talk to them tomorrow and arrange a replacement to go to Lyon and I can swap this with it in the Lyon store. I am hoping they won't have an issue with getting a replacement shipped to another store/country while I hold onto this one as I can't really be without this computer for a week as it isn't a system breaking issue just super annoying.

I don't think that should be a problem, it sounds like they did mine in an unusual method, getting laptop shipped off first before replacement. I did also arrange my replacement to be a BTO with extra storage, as I hadn't been able to BTO on original purchase. ( not a freebie, did have to pay that out of own pocket! )

Cheers for the details. Will let you know how things go tomorrow. Apple are usually very good so not worried tbh.

So had it plugged in for over an hour now on the Lenovo charger and no chime. Interesting!

Interesting indeed.. I think that's two reports now where a different brand usb charger has failed to do it, but at least one where a different apple charger has still.

I just called Apple support and described the problem. The agent suggested that the recurring power chime was by design and could be there to remind the user that the laptop is at full charge. I was also told that I should hear a chime when I reboot (a la the 2015 MBP boot chime), and that something is likely wrong if I'm not hearing. I did underscore the fact that we were talking about a 2018 MBP. smh.

Whoever you spoke to is definitely incorrect.. it should only chime when plugged into power. Though I'm still expecting it will be a T2 firmware bug of some sort that will hopefully be patchable.

So did you end up with two expensive power adapters and cables? Sending the adapter is a good idea if they sent you a new one, as I don't see that issue on my CalDigit dock.

Right now I don't know, and new laptop hasn't been sent yet!

Oh! I'm still waiting for them to ship my new one before shipping a new one out. I let them authorize about $4K to my card in case I don't return mine.

Interesting -- I switched to using the 61W power adapter that came with my 2017 13" MBP. So far, no recurring power chimes on my 2018 15".

Yeah so far with this 65W Lenovo charger no chime. I am going to monitor it over night (sound activated recording) and see if there is anything.

Ok so no chime all night on the Lenovo charger! Seems to only happen with the Apple 87W charger. Weird!

Maybe they did it this way around to avoid putting charge on card? Though it sounded like they wanted my laptop over there ASAP and then deal with replacement. I did actually end up with spare magsafe chargers from apple before when they've exchanged laptops.

Regards only happening with 87w charger, it wouldn't surprise me if there's extra communication happening with that charger than others.

Quick question for anyone with this issue - Are you using a Logitech MX Master or MX Master 2 Bluetooth mouse?

I did a reinstall of High Sierra but did not setup the mouse and so far I have not noticed the chime issue. It has only been two hours but it was happening more often than that so I am not sure what is going on.

I was using zero accessories or third party programs on last install before it was sent off, completely stock OS install.

Hmm. Guess I will have to keep monitoring my machine over night then and see if it happens.

Todays Update: Chime happens again (roughly every 45-60 minutes) when using the official 87W Apple USB-C charger that comes with the 15" MBP.

Using my Lenovo 65W USB-C charger (that came with my X1 Carbon 6th Gen) everything is as it should be in that there is no constant chime every 45-60 minutes.

Tomorrow I am going to try using the Apple 87W charger with a third party USB-C cable. I don't expect it to make any difference but can't hurt to try! Sadly I don't have another Apple 87W charger to try out.
