The S upgrade was 2018, when the XS was released.
Apple has likely moved to a double S cycle.

6, 6s... Followed by 6ss(aka iphone 7, 2016) which had the same ID, the major 'courage' was removal of the headphone jack. People should stop kidding themselves and giving Apple a break, it was really a 6ss year.

Expect 2019 to be similar to the 7 year. They'll probably give it an all new number, depart from X, to cover up their lagging SS cycle.

Even the iPhone 8(2017) had a very similar ID to the 6/6s/7, but was at least differentiated by the glass rear to allow the addition of wireless charging. It thus required major retooling.

Why would you even need to plug it in to your Mac?

Here is one example that I actually used before it got gimped:

When I travel, I can just bring my MBP, the power brick, and the iPhone. When I needed to charge the iPhone, I just plug the iPhone in with the lightning usb cable. This allowed me to not care about bringing the iPhone wall adapter.

Because of the recent inability to do this, I bought an Anker dual usb wall outlet plug that I bring when I travel. I didn’t buy this usb wall plug until Apple and Tim Cook decided to take nickel and diming to the next level

On a side note, John Gruber did speculate a while back that the reason for Apple not doing this could be simply that Apple just wasn’t able to produce 200 million fast chargers to go with every one of their iPhones. Doesn’t sound that impossible, when you consider that any change made to the iPhone needs to be able to scale to that amount in order to not create supply bottlenecks and impact sales.
That makes no sense at all. It's a charger. It's not like it's a critical, hard to source, hard to manufacture component. Fast chargers are a "dime a dozen" from multiple OEM's with volumes commensurate with Apple's. At best that would have been an okay excuse back around the iP7 era. Again, it's a fast charger, not a triple lens-front facing- AI enabled- infra-red-telescopic selfie cam.

It's possible that Apple is still reeling from the hurried decision of putting USB-C on the iPad Pro instead of using a proprietary connector like the lightning cable.

Maybe they are designing a new Lightning 2 cable with a USB-C thunderbolt connector for the next iPhone for maximum charging speeds with newer security.

If so they will have to walk the port back on the next iPad Pro. They can blame the bending on the old USB-C port and say it had to be replaced. o_O

I personally don't see this as a big deal. I would have preferred to have it with USB-C, but the truth of the matter is there are far, far, far more people out there with USB-A-only machines than USB-C-only machines. Thus, those of us with USB-C machines spend the $5 to get the USB-C to USB-A adapters. I even carry one on my keychain, although it's mainly for USB-A thumb drives, to connect to my 12" MacBook.

I think there would be more complaints about going all USB-C than there would be about keeping Lightning, unless Apple included a USB-C to USB-A adapter in the box like they did with the Lightning to headphone jack adapter.

This doesn't bode well for the new iPads this year either for USB-C though, even though the iPad Pro already has gone USB-C.

USB-C is a necessity to move the iPad platform forward. We just don't yet have an operating system to take advantage of all that it offers.

Really hope this is true! iPhone should stick to lightning as long as it still has a port.

Unpopular opinion: most people are charging devices overnight, and 5W is more than sufficient for these use cases. Also, long term slower charges are better for battery health.

This!
Including a high-power charger with every iPhone makes little sense, neither economically nor ecologically.

However I wish they'd finally move the small brick to USB-C and include the Lightning to USB-C cable.
Also make the adapter 7.5 W, which should be feasible in the same size form factor. Since iPhone batteries have gotten a lot bigger over the last decade, that 50 % increase shouldn't impact battery health too much.

I don't understand Apple...
They believe in USB-C so much they make it the ONLY port on a MAC PRO machine (not the entry level netbook) yet they refuse to adopt it as the standard in their new iphones.

USB-C only MacBooks have been on the market for 2 years now and I can easily say their users are still running with dongles around... USB-A still dominant...

If they did go to a USB-C connector when I upgrade my device I would have to buy a dongle for my mid 2012 MBP non retina running Mojave. Hopefully the dongle would plug into the thunderbolt port for optimal speed and hopefully not a split cable. Anyone remember that split USB 1/FireWire 30 pin cable I had to buy for my iPod? Yikes!

So? apple could provide a software option that switched fact charging on and off like some of their competition is doing(most notably Samsung). So problem solved if you wan to charge the phone slowly.

You have to admit that for the NON-techies, there would be screaming and howling. Remember all the handwringing during the switch to lightning?
Yes but that didn't stop Apple from removing the headphone port and calling it an act of courage necessary to move forward...and make them more money.

Where's that courage now?

However, this is a mere rumor. Fun to chat about but not worth really getting upset about.

Bought my X right after it was released and the 5W brick is still sitting in the box.
Yes,same here but the point is we shouldn’t be paying separately for a decent charger.every body else is supplying the latest technology available with their flagship devices, except Apple.

Lightning tops out at USB 3.0, 5gbps.

How do you know? Apple owns Lightning, only they know what it's capable of in theory.

I'd bet that USB 3.1 Gen 2 (a.k.a. USB 3.2 Gen 2x1), which does 10 Gbps, will be possible using the Lightning connector since it doesn't need additional pins.
