RIP 3D Touch :'(
majority of people will not miss it at all.

These mock ups actually don’t look to bad compared to some of the others.

I hope they don’t ditch 3D Touch.

But Touch ID is dead.
if Touch ID could be placed under display, fast and not in a single spot, then it will be 100% better than Face ID.

I for one hope that there will be a new SE style small phone. Ideal for for a phone for me and they did sell well.

When I want a bigger screen then have iPad.

I like my phone to be phone size!

No, it shouldn't, because that isn't why the product ever existed. No one cares what you would buy immediately.
Actually that is exactly why Apple released the SE...go ahead, watch the keynote. (It wasn’t about creating a budget phone, if that’s what you’re suggesting.) Tim said while introducing the SE that the product was in response to users who wanted the power of the latest iPhone in a smaller form factor. That’s why they outfitted it with the same internals as the 6S — at that time the latest and greatest model — rather than giving it the lower specs of the then year-old 6. (It should be noted the SE didn’t share ALL of the 6S tech: the FaceTime camera and screen were lower quality than the 6S, though many believed this was due to the technical constraints of retaining the 5S form factor.)

After you hear the words, "freeze, put your hands up.", You are going to reach in your pocket to click the side button 5 times?

To my fellow criminals and international masterminds. Just do this... open Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Use Face ID, and disable iPhone Unlock.

When I’ve been arrested and those pesky law enforcement officers attempt to flash my iPhone in front of my face this never fails to piss-off the cops.

You guys do realize these tech companies know about every feature you use on the operating system and base future product features on what is used and what isn't. 3D touch, if its really going away, it'll only be because nobody uses it and the numbers back up the decision.

This is total speculation. My guess is that if the rumor is true, the 3D touch component cost is significantly high enough that they decided it was an easy cut to keep prices the same with the 2019 additions of a bigger battery, extra camera and so on.

The jack was not removed because it was "old and antiquated." It was removed because wireless connection is better than wired, a jack takes up space in the device that can be used for other things, and most people prefer not having wires connected between their ears and a device.

Wireless communication has been around since the late 1800s so it's just as "old."

Wireless does not (yet) deliver equal or better audio quality than a wired connection. But most people do prefer the wireless for the conveniences you mentioned.

Primary reason for removing the jack was to free up valuable space for other internals (like the Taptic Engine), and to embrace a more wireless future.

I’d rather have 3D Touch over the in-screen fingerprint sensor.

If Apple really decides to re-implement Touch ID after everything they’ve said about the chance of that happening... it’ll be one big, hairy, nasty, fungus-infested foot in their mouths.

If fingerprint ID makes a comeback I’ll be able to consider the iPhone again. Loathing the Face ID.

I think you hit on something, it would be great to have BOTH face ID and touch ID. Face ID for the situations it works well, and touch ID for the situations face ID fails.

Samsung has a patent on having both, that's why apple can't do it. That has to be the reason.

You’re right. However, though I recognise that AirPods were released before Bluetooth 5.0, with this generation of Bluetooth the difference in quality is much, much smaller. And internal space comes at a huge premium. One of the most valuable real estates in any electronic device! I actually wondered why did the industry keep using the bigger cabled connection instead of using the smaller headphone cabled connection that is available.

I have enjoyed haptic touch on the XR and it’s close but it’s just not quite as good as 3D Touch. The main issue is it’s not as fast. It feels delayed Vs 3D Touch which makes sense. Really sucks if apple will remove it. It makes sense as per prior rumours but just disappointing nonetheless.
Isn’t it possible that the features of 3D Touch can and will exist without the actual 3D Touch hardware? That is, using the Taptic Engine to simulate 3D Touch through a long-hold screen press, but without having the 3D Touch technology that detects a hard screen press? My iPhone SE doesn’t have 3D Touch but there are some apps and aspects of iOS (eg. Control center) that allow me to get the same software behavior without the 3D Touch technology. Perhaps that is the direction Apple is moving, since 3D Touch technology requires the screen to be slightly thicker and that may now be undesirable with them for aesthetic reasons. Just thinking out loud here ;)

Do these people really believe that Apple will walk back on Face ID? After going with it on the iPads, the company has given more than enough evidence that it is fully invested in it. Never mind the fact that once you use Face ID you realize how much superior it is to Touch ID.
TouchID is better if you just want to peak at your device which lies next to you but from where the sensor can’t scan your face. Perhaps both?

Sheesh. Glad the SE rumour is sketchy as I can't think of anything more underwhelming than an 'SE2' based on the 8. Holding off on getting a new phone to see what they come up with in 2020. Hopefully they have something more compelling than the cheaper Google phones but that is where my money is going if not.

At least there was the rumour that 2020's XS equivalent would be a little smaller than the current phone. Would like to see that corroborated.

If you are reading Apple interns: Smal phone, edge to edge display. Not difficult.
If you are reading Jony Ive: see above. I know you have one in your office.

Full-screen TouchID would be a great security feature. Imagine if it authenticated EVERY TIME you touched your phone, such as while using apps, etc.. It would ensure that even if you had the phone unlocked, nobody could interact with it at all, like swiping to other pictures, etc, and you wouldn't need to enable Guided Access.

Why does everyone think it has to be one or the other and that the technologies can't complement each other

I like 3D Touch and I use it often. But what is the gesture that offers up similar functionality on iPhone models that don't support 3D Touch? Is it a long press? At the least I would expect that to work in future phones and maybe Apple has something better than that to replace 3D Touch. I hope so, anyways.
