This is going to be difficult.

The league has intra-divisional home-away competition and an unbalanced number of those games (with divisional rivals) will cause an unfair advantage/disadvantage.

MLB can't realistically reprogram the entire schedule; many venues have other commitments on the days that the home team is away. They really can't slide the season into late November-December since many parks don't play under a roof; weather is too much of a factor at the end of the year.

The hopefully positive outcome is that the owners see some benefit to a shorter regular season. The baseball season keeps getting longer, the games get longer, the pre-season (including all that WBC silliness) added up as well.

I wonder if they can play a shortened season plus extra playoffs (top 3 from each division or something like that). Two games series for regular season.

I'm not sure that a sport where the two leagues haven't played under the same set of rules (DH) for so long, and once awarded home field advantage in the championship match (again, played under different rules, in the same series!) based on the results of a mid-season exhibition game, is overly concerned with such questions.

I suspect, as in past instances of disruptions, they'll play a truncated season. At least with a 162-game schedule, MLB will feel the least impact of any sport.

As I mentioned I'm not sure if MLB can reprogram the entire season to play two game series. The venues have other users.

For sure, MLB would feel less impact on a shortened season than other sports and I'm aware of the whole DH thing (I'm a National League guy myself).

At least in post-season competition, the DH discrepancy only comes into play in the World Series: during the LDS and LCS, the games are confined to the respective leagues. Post season baseball in itself (both behavior and circumstances) give a little more advantage to pitching. There are more travel days. The games are played in cooler temperatures and at night when the ball doesn't carry as much. Also, teams generally switch to a four-man rotation (due to the extra rest days) which means adding another arm to the bullpen.

Anyhow, it will be melancholy to see Opening Day come and go without a game.

I doubt they'll try to rearrange the schedule to "balance" things out. That would be very difficult, even with the luxury of time.

I suspect they'll just cancel whatever games would have taken place during the stoppage, and simply resume the schedule from the new start date, and perhaps modify the playoffs.

Teams already hate makeup dates regularly caused by things like rainouts, and everyone will have to accept the hand being dealt.

Ironically, MLB is probably breathing a slight sigh of relief that the Astros are no longer the topic du jour…at least until the Red Sox findings are released. Damned Junior Circuit! 😀

8 weeks before any sports resume? The league won't be able to do a full season but will they have to negotiate with the union?

Agreed. I think the season will ultimately be around 80-90 games this year.

I wonder how long it will take, these are still elective surgeries.
What do you mean? These pro athletes are going to some of the finest specialists in the nation.

If I screw up my arm and need to get surgery, Kaiser Permanente isn't going to send me to one of these docs.

A star like Chris Sale (7x All-Star, 1x World Series champion) can probably get the procedure done by Monday.

Young Tyler Beede will have to wait his turn. Maybe rich CEOs with golfer's injuries can pay top dollar to precede him, but it's not like the little people like up affect any top-tier orthopedic surgeon's schedule.

Tommy John surgery is not considered an emergency. It's elective as you can still function with it.

It is supposed to be opening day for our beloved baseball, it is strange not to hear 'Play Ball' across the nation. Although not in the US now, I was looking forward to watching online and seeing the first crack of the bat.

Doesn't look like the season will start before Memorial Day weekend (end of May) when I have tickets. I'm wondering what will be done for people in that situation.

There is no way they play a full season so I assume they will refund the games not played.
