The NFL has been slowing expanding the playoffs for years. What started out as 5 teams from each Conference is now 7.

So you have the 4 Division Winners. They get a home game no matter what. So even though the Ravens & Chargers & will finish with a better record that the winner of the AFC South, they will still go on the road.

The first weekend of the Playoffs is the Wild Card Weekend. In the old days, the WC teams played each other for a slot in the main draw. But now the 3 WC's play the #2 - #4 Seeds. The #1 teams gets a week off. So after this weekend, there are 4 teams left in each Conference. That is why the #1 seed is so important. Gives the guys a week to rest and heal up a bit.

The second weekend is know as the Divisional Round. The 3 winners from the WC round and the #1 Seed then play with the 2 highest seeds getting home games. Unlike the NBA, the NFL reseeds the Playoffs weekly.

The third weekend is the Conference Championships. The two remaining teams play at the higher seeded team for a chance to go to the Superbowl.

Clear as mud now, right? ;)

I've had Mississippi mud pie that has been clearer than this! ugh, what a cluster, and another reason why I don't follow the NFL! 😂

I forgot about all of the conferences.. ugh. Yeah, that does make this even harder. With all of that, I don't see a way that the brass at the NFL can work through this with a decision that benefits both teams, and it isn't right to make them play again because of the week's rest the other teams will get. Replaying the game resets the entire environment, which isn't fair to either team because of the seeding, getting them both the same seed and subsequent bye wouldn't work for the other teams. In a sense, by not having any contingency in order, the NFL sabotaged their own playoffs. It will be interesting to see how they work their way out of this.

Hamlin showing signs of progress:
I'm speaking out in complete and utter ignorance but the way this is seemingly happening, it appears to my uneducated self that Hamlin suffered a brain injury.

I mean if his heart stopped working, but was restarted at the stadium, why are they keeping him sedated? There's more to the issue to be sure but it does seem more then just restarting the heart and making sure he's ok

I'm sure the NFL is hoping for the one scenario in which this game doesn't matter.

What I do find odd is that none of the sports shows are talking about this which is surprising as it would easily fill programming time. Perhaps they just wanted to talk about Hamlin first and thought it insensitive to talk about other scenarios.

Maybe they will today and I will see when I watch PTI this evening.

The man got destroyed in the media for posting about game as Hamlin was laying there (rightfully so). I'm thinking no one is willing to spend a lot of time talking about the make up game or what options the NFL may have

Saw one report that they got his heart restarted, but that he wasn't breathing on his own. So he was sedated for the breathing tube.

I know when it happened, and I was watching it live, the way he popped up and then went down I immediately thought concussion. There was a player a few weeks ago who got hit and he popped up took a couple of steps and then his legs started buckling. He just happened to be right by the opposing team sideline and their trainer recognized it and ran to him.

Seems this issue of getting hit in the chest at exactly the precise time is more common than you know. Not common as in it happens every day, but several times a year to athletes.

I'm CPR certified and when I went through my training, they said mouth to mouth isn't needed, at least initially. There's enough oxygen in the blood to keep the brain from incurring any harm for several minutes, as long as you keep the heart going.

Obviously, there's a lot that happened that only the family knows and it could be related to lack of oxygen

I'm sure some of that was because of who posted it. I mean he is one of the most hated commentators in the business. Not sure how Shannon puts up with him.

But at the end of the day, the NFL will go on. They will play games this weekend and this will need to be figured out.

When did they change that? I know it was semi-recently. Was that around time time they removed the initial myocardial thump?

I renewed my certification, so its been about 6 years. Not all certified instructors prescribe to this but for us here in Massachusetts - most of the police/fire/EMTS prescribe to that here

Looks like Jim Harbaugh may be jumping ship and leaving Michigan. I really do think the school did him dirty when they forced him to take a massive pay cut a few years ago or be fired. They have since renegotiated a more equitable contract but that was demeaning.

Rumors are have swirled around possible landing spots including Denver and Carolina. I think the latter makes more sense. He has a proven track record of improving QBs, they have a good defense and have opportunities to improve the team. Denver on the other hand, has no first round draft picks, pretty tight on the salary cap. How coachable will Wilson be at his age - seems rather arrogant and he's? How meddlesome will the new owners be? Basically a lot more question marks for Denver then Carolina. There's also Indy.
Rumor has it that Cleveland might be looking at coaches as well (not sure I believe that, but it's been "reported.")

Wow, but Cleveland is a dumpster fire but I think the owner knows that changing the offense yet again with another coach will only set Watson back.

Sedation (and body cooling) are two ways that help the body heal faster. In extreme cases, an artificial coma is induced. The less resources the body needs for "secondary" things are resources that can be used to help the body heal.

Momentum builds for cancellation of Bills-Bengals game
I hate to say it, but this makes the most sense. If this was earlier in the season, then there's the flexibility because of the byes, but at this point the post season and SB are pretty much locked in.

The SB is, but they can move the playoffs back one week as there is a BYE week between the Conference Championships and the SB.

IIRC, this is what they did after 9/11.

There is a two week window between the final playoff game and the SB, but I think the NFL likes to use that to ramp up excitement and also make money BUT you're right. They could use that week and push everything back

Cancellation makes logistical sense, but from a playoff perspective a #1 seed makes the SB 50% of the time.

Move both Week 18 games of the Bills and Bengals to Saturday (mental health willing**) then make up the Bills/Bengals game on Wed. Then a Bills v X or Bengals v Y AFC Wild Card game(s) on Monday.

Physically both teams should be prepared for a Sat game. Continuation game 4 days later. Wild card 5 days after that.
It's a tough stretch...

** I hear both teams did walk throughs yesterday and assume practice today...but are they all 100% in?
Some really good news on Hamlin would lift everyone's sprits.

There have been occasions where there hasn't been a bye week. Something about how the calendar falls. So it would not be unprecedented.

Looks like NFL has officially called off the game, according to the AP.
