• Current Top 50 = members with the 50 currently highest post counts.
• Cur Posts = current count of posts by this member (see Note below).
• 6-Mo Posts = count of posts made in this measurement period, or "---" if none.
• Cur Rate = average # posts per day by this member over the measurement period.
• Delta Rate = change in average daily post rate from the prior semi-annual period to the latest period.
• Prev Rank = previous rank, as of 6 months ago; a number above 50 for those who are new to the Top 50.
• Delta Rank = change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank since prior semi-annual stats.
• 6-Mo Likes = count of likes received in this measurement period.
• Likes/Post = ratio of Likes per Post in this measurement period, or "---" if data unavailable.
• Avg of one post every = average time between member's posts, in days, hours, and minutes, based on a 24-hour day.

Note: Posts in any of the following forums are not counted in any post counts or post rates.

Remarks

1. As predicted in January, @maflynn exceeded 69,000 posts. He also retired from being a moderator, and is now a Moderator emeritus.
   
2. There were no changes in rank in the Top 10. The spacing between the Top 10 members, and their current post rates, suggests there won't be many changes of rank here in the next few months. We'll see a graph on this later.
   
3. @Apple_Robert had another significant decrease in post rate. He managed to increase his rank by 1, but it wasn't enough to move past mad jew or into the Top 10.
   
4. New to the Top 50, @jav6454 moved up from rank 52, just outside the Top 50.
   
5. There were few other changes of rank in the Top 50. In fact, almost half the members in the Top 50 were inactive over the past 6 months.
   
6. Last but not least, @TheYayAreaLiving flew from rank 50 to 16, an increase of 34 positions. This is after debuting at rank 50 in January.

Remarks

1. TheYayAreaLiving is again the most prolific poster, with more than 3 times as many posts as the 2nd place @jav6454.
   
2. @turbineseaplane and @Amethyst1 are the two most prolific posters outside the Active Top 50.
   
3. @LFC2020 appears in the Active Top 50 list, but hasn't yet made it into the Top 50 list of Table 1. They're currently at rank 55.

The actual ranks of the first 13 match their earlier projections. This wasn't a great feat of numerology. It was mostly due to the gap sizes between the different post-counts. A wider gap is a bigger target.


At ranks 14 and 15, @I7guy posted more than projected, passing @Eidorian, who made almost exactly the number of posts projected. (The projected ranks predicted in Jan 2022 are followed by the actual ranks measured in July 2022.)

Info About All Graphs

The horizontal X axes represent dates, and are labeled as YYYY-MM-DD.

The vertical Y axes are automatically determined, and are specific to a graph. The upper and lower limits of each graph are based on the range of values in the graphed data. This means that the steepness of line slopes can't be compared between different graphs.

Colors are also automatically assigned, from a rotating pool of 12 colors. This can make color-to-name conversion ambiguous when more than 12 members are graphed. Use each graph's legend or key on the right to resolve any duplicate colors. The legend is arranged in the same order as the right-most points of each graph.

A dashed line is automatically assigned to inactive users (no posts in the latest measurement period), and a solid line to active users (at least 1 post in latest period). To reduce the clutter, the only inactive user typically shown is @mad jew.


Graphs of Top 50 Post-Counts Over Time

These two graphs show the progression of semi-annual post counts for the Top 50 posters, starting from 2016 July 3rd (2016-07-03). Users who made no posts in the last 6 months are omitted, except for the historical benchmark represented by @mad jew. The member listed last in Group 1 appears in both graphs, with different colors. This overlap is intentional.

Top 50 Posters: In Two Groups

A horizontal graph line (or nearly so) is a member with a low post rate.

A steeply rising slope indicates a high post rate. If the slopes of the segments steepens over time, that user is increasing their post rate. If the slopes flatten, the post rate is falling off.

In the upper graph we can see the continued flattening in @Apple_Robert's post rate in the most recent period, compared to the two prior periods. In contrast, @Apple fanboy has a fairly consistent slope, at least at this multi-year scale. We also see that TheYayAreaLiving has a fairly consistent post-rate (slope) over the past year, with a slope higher than any other. The closest similar slopes are Apple_Robert starting July 2020, or Relentless Power in July 2017.

In the lower graph, @Huntn has a pretty consistent slope (post rate) over multiple years. We also see a recent increased post rate by @jav6454, after several years of a fairly low rate.


Cluttered Graphs

The first graph below shows all the members from the two graphs above in a single graph. It's more cluttered and difficult to read.

We can still see a marked change in line slope for Apple_Robert, and the brief but extreme upward slope for TheYayAreaLiving

The second graph, which adds the remaining inactive members in the Top 50, is even more cluttered.

The main reason for showing these is to compare all the slopes together (post-count growth rates). This gives an idea of how much the most prolific posters actually post.

Graphs of Weekly Post-Count Growth

The following graphs show weekly post-count growth for the most prolific 36 users, divided into 3 groups of 12 each. There is no overlap between groups.

Each line represents one user's weekly post-count growth, relative to their post count at the start of the measurement period 6 months ago. In effect, each member gets their own "starting count", and the graph shows how their individual post count grows from week to week.

If a member makes a lot of posts for a week, then their line will slope up more steeply. If they make no posts for a week, then their line will be flat. In rare cases, a line may drop a little, which means that some posts were deleted, or a thread was moved to an uncounted forum.

Since the members of each group have different ranges, you can't compare slopes between graphs. A steep line in one graph might not represent the same post rate in another graph. To get a sense of overall weekly growth, we need a single graph with all the Prolific Posters, which is shown after the groups of 12.


Weekly Post Growth

In the upper Group 1 graph, TheYayAreaLiving's post rate is so high it squeezes the other members of Group 1 into a small range with little detail. We can see the green (@jav6454), blue (@turbineseaplane), and orange (@LFC2020) lines stand out from the others due to their shape, but other details are difficult to pick out.

The lower graph removes the most prolific poster, which reduces the top Y value by about 3 times. This lets us see more detail not evident in the upper graph.

• @java6454 grows from no posts for the first few months, to posting at an increasing rate;
• @turbineseaplane shows a much steadier post rate, but still with some variation;
• @LFC2020 goes from no posts, to many posts over a couple months, then back to no posts.

In Groups 2 & 3 we see some posters with wavering lines, which means several weeks with fewer posts (flatter), and several weeks with many more (steeper) . In some cases, you can see increased posting (steeper) near events like product announcements, such as in early March.

In the above graph we can compare slopes, which gives a better sense of how prolific the top poster is, compared to everyone else.

This graph omits the most prolific poster. Because the vertical max depends on the range of values graphed, it shows more detail in the lower range.

Top 50 Changes: Details

Inside and Outside the Top 10

As noted in the first post of this thread, there were no changes of rank within the Top 10. I mentioned that the spacing and the post-rates made it unlikely to see changes here soon. This graph illustrates that point.

The line with the greatest slope belongs to @Apple fanboy, but just doing a visual estimate, it doesn't look like he'll surpass @C DM for a while. The projected post-counts and ranks from Table 4 indicate no change before Statistics Day of next year.

I've included mad jew, who at rank 11 is no longer in the Top 10.

In this graph, mad jew is at the top, not the bottom, and we see some active and inactive members below him.

The most prolific is obviously TheYayAreaLiving. There are 4 other members fairly close together:
@Eidorian, @I7guy, @mkrishnan, and @Apple_Robert.
They may all be passed by TheYayAreaLiving within a few weeks of one another.

This graph is a kind of simplified summary of the prior two. I've kept the two top posters, and the most prolific within the Top 10: AppleFanBoy. I've kept mad jew as a marker between inside the Top 10 and outside it. Apple_Robert and I7guy are the two active members closest to mad jew. And finally, TheYayAreaLiving is advancing on mad jew's position at rank 11.


The Prolific Ones

This graph shows most of the 12 most prolific posters from the past 6 months, and extends the oldest date back to about a year ago. It also uses 2-week intervals.

I chose a year because it gives a broader view of posting patterns. I omitted TheYayAreaLiving to avoid the "squeezed" effect seen in earlier graphs.

I don't have any data collected for @LFC2020 and @Amethyst1 before Dec 2021, so their graph lines don't go earlier than that.

As always, a fascinating read, @chown33, and many thanks for your time, trouble and for the (clearly) extraordinary amount of work you have put into compiling this twice yearly list.

It is something I have always enjoyed reading, ever since I first joined MR 14 years ago, (and long before it ever crossed my mind that I would ever get to play a role as a character in these biannual compilations).

I am not usually one for perusing graphs and statistics, but this is definitely fascinating viewing and reading! Thanks so much, Chown33, for the work you put into this -- and to your predecessor, Doctor Q, who, if I recall correctly, started this and who did these reports for a long time as well.

Wow, seeing my own name appearing here-and-there is really cool! I guess I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing, participating as usual, not doing anything special or extraordinary, and based on today's statistics, maybe, possibly, I might crack the barrier of the T0P 50 next time around.... Not a goal, mind you, but, yeah, after hanging around this place since 2005 it would be rather fun, too to be in the Elite TOP 50.....

Reading this thread this evening, and - partly as a consequence - checking names of people I have followed, or who have followed me, for the first time in an absolute age - as I noticed that I hadn't seen some of them around in a while, it struck me that at least two haven't posted (at all) over the past two years, while another hasn't posted here in three years.

Well, things happen, one lives through major and profound life changes (personal and professional) and so on, but still: Some of the people with whom I would have chatted on this very thread/topic (the bi-annual "Top 50 Posters" threads) as recently as a few years ago appear to have vanished into the proverbial ether.

Reading this thread this evening, and - partly as a consequence - checking names of people I have followed, or who have followed me, for the first time in an absolute age - as I noticed that I hadn't seen some of them around in a while, it struck me that at least two haven't posted (at all) over the past two years, while another hasn't posted here in three years.

Well, things happen, one lives through major and profound life changes (personal and professional) and so on, but still: Some of the people with whom I would have chatted on this very thread/topic (the bi-annual "Top 50 Posters" threads) as recently as a few years ago appear to have vanished into the proverbial ether.

You and I both. Several of the posters I follow are now inactive for quite some time. The only one that has come back is DoFoT.

I was also in the same conundrum of life taking my mind away from MR. However, circumstances allowed my return and I decided that while time permitted, to make it my mission to reach Top 50 again.

Agreed, some post counts are "crazy" but, if you rummaged, or asked, or queried, or wondered, you would probably find that there were reasons in an individual's life (some combination of the private, the personal and - possibly - professional, as well) why they were in a position to post so frequently at - or during - a particular time.

The nature of the online environment tends to not just allow, but encourage, "fly-by" reaction posts, (including with the use of emojis).

However, I think you will find that most of the "frequent" posters, or those individuals with high post counts, tend to have a history of posting both short, brief, posts, as well as longer, more thoughtful ones, depending on context and the topic under discussion.

If you only counted quality posts I’d not make the top 10,000,000. But we all chose where to spend our online time.
Having never joined Twitter or FB I probably spend more time here than many.
