Just wanted to report that my 4th replacement imac (2 2009 and now 2 2010) arrived today and has yellowing toward the bottom third of the screen as did all three before it. I've already arranged for it to go back and will send it off tomorrow, a process I've become all too familiar with.

I'd be happy at this point just to find one that's not *noticeably* discolored. I strongly believe that the vast majority of people reporting "perfect" screens are simply not perceptive enough to notice the issue.... lucky them.

I think that is true for most people but there are definitely good ones and bad ones. I got one that is pretty much perfect with no yellow but it was the fourth one. I posted pics of mine earlier on the thread too. Good luck and don't give up I think the 2010 models are a little better

My three Attempts - Steve Jobs, please call me!

Tech:
IMAC 27" shipped late 2009, full spec
SLR camera on tripod, dark room, adjust for horizontal and vertical against screen. Using this page for test ( http://imac.squeaked.com/test.php ) Import into photo editing software, adjust contrast, saturation etc. Using the IMAC for photo editing, and colour balancing the screen with external device.

1. The shipped IMAC, yellow 60% in uneven pattern, black horizontal line at lower part
2. First replacement (Cancom), 80% yellow, much more intense, light leaks around corners
3. Third replacement, still yellow, bit less, now also more pink-ish, black line back again, not that strong in the first

= I expect the color, even if it is yellow, to be even on the screen, eventhough the intensity may vary slight

A. I know it is not top of the line photo editing screen, but Apple has a name in the graphic industry to protect and have plenty of knowledge to make sure they have sufficient quality and are able to discard new production methods if failed
B: If I pay £2,000 (GBP) I do expect the things to work sufficiently and do not expect to get lame excuses that this should be of an enthusiasm/amateur quality build, therefore I should accept it is of Toy-standard
C: I require Apple to take seriously on this and offer to replace all LM270WQ1 screens to the CCFL LM270WQ2 Cold Cathode version that the manufacturer have changed to for other makes that utilise this manufacturer for their displays. Apparently, it is already determined that the try with the LED Matrix didn't work well, please, like a car manufacturer should do, please offer replacement on all hardware <1year.
D: Steve Jobs, you are free to answer me and the rest on this forum, if you are still interested to produce quality and style into the graphics community, you have a brand to protect and this is not the right way to do it! I am not happy to feel bad and a bit fooled when spending £2,000.

Please tell me what I should do now? a fourth attempt?

Best regards
MG, serial ending on 5RU, London, UK, Steve you got my details!

ps. my magic mouse also sucks, cannot close windows properly need to click in circles, fails to connect many times (as for the WIFI) - what is going on??

One theory circulated around some time ago is that replacement computers are actually "recycled", meaning those are units already returned by somebody else. This would be a most plausible explanation of some people making multiple replacements and then settling for the "least faulty". The chances are that you'll eventually tire out too, and accept something. My advice is to actually RETURN your unit for cash and BUY another one. There was quite a few people around bragging about their "perfect" iMacs, they can't be all lying, or working for Apple? Just my $0.02.

New Mac owner, I have an iMac 21.5" i3 which was a birthday gift that I received on the weekend and straight away I noticed a yellow tinge. It's it's brightest in the bottom right corner but the tests suggest it exist in the whole bottom 3rd of the screen. Now I noticed the yellow tinge before I even researched on the web so I didn't go "looking" for the problem as some people have suggested that others may have, I simply discovered it without influence.

I am in Australia and the iMac was purchased from an apple premium reseller. I don't have the serial number handy for build week info (I'll edit my post later with that) but I assume it is fairly new as this premium reseller turn over a fair bit of stock.

I am leaning towards keeping it rather than asking for a replacement as from what I have read on here and other places you are not necessarily guaranteed of getting a better one, it could even be worse. I am thinking of putting up with it for now even though I can't not notice it and looking at getting the screen replaced under warranty later on... perhaps when the panel faults are fixed and I can be guaranteed of getting a tint free replacement? Anyone else planning on doing the same thing?

New to the forum here, my first post

I just received a replacement for my 27" iMac because of screen color shifting and the psu made a cracking noise when I lowered brightness. Anyway, I would like you all to take a look at my screen. I see green tint on the left side and yellow from the top middle almost completely down to the bottom. If I return this iMac, will there be a big chance I get a better screen?

I hope the attached file is visible...

I thought it was safe to buy... got my first iMac today and it's yellow. It's not terribly bad, but once you notice it, you can't un-notice it. I'll probably take it back and upgrade while I'm at it.

Should be visible here. Tell me it's my imagination.

My Photoshop is telling me, that the right side of the picture is ~7% green, shifting to 6% yellow in the right low corner.

Please help me out?

I'm totally lost here.

Today I got my 4th iMac back from the Apple Service Center and they said there was no Yellow tint on it. Before I showed photo's of it and it was clearly there was a yellow tint. It's the 4th iMac because the previous one's had buzzing screens and glue in the back of the screen. Now this one came back from repair. I cannot spot if there is a flaw in my screen. Sometimes I see the yellow wash and sometimes not. I made some pictures of my screen on full brightness and 50% and less.
Can somebody please advise me to send it back again? of to keep it?

Thnx a lot from the Netherlands!

What a shame.

Apple STILL hasnt fixed this yellow tint problem.

YES. Your screen has plenty of yellow. Cut and paste thebottom bars and superimpose over the top ones. You'll see how contrasted they are.

It is better to get a full refund then play the return and replace game. Once you have the money back in your account, buy a new iMac. It seems that many who buy NEW and request a replacement instead of a refund, end up with refurbished iMacs. There are many threads (do a search) about people who bought new and ended up with a refurbished replacement. Fingerpirnts, debris inside casing, scratches on the external casing, etc. - and STILL have yellow tinting and a dark gray bar at the bottom. It appears Apple is trying to sell off the massive amount of retunred units to unsuspecting consumers. Do a search in this board or Apple's. In fact, on the Apple message board, thye actively delete a lot of posts that highlight the flaws. Beware. Apple is not the friendly manufacturer many of you think they are. They used to have quality products, but now they are very focused on their mobile division (iPads.iPhones.iPods) and shifted their resources accordingly. Less focus on the desktop line.

I bought mine i7 in the aMac store. Before buying I did some testing. And it's perfect.
Ask a refund and buy a new one, directly in the store.

What a shame.

Thnx for the quick reply. My serial number is W8018xxx
and the thing is that i bought this quad core for 1599 euro's and a new one with only slight increase in speed will set me back 1999 euro's.
You still recommand the money back or claim an extra for all the problems?

There were many reports of replacements being worse than the returned iMac. It looks like Apple is "recycling" returns (sending them as replacements for other returned macs). By returning for cash AND buying you have a chance to get into the general pool of iMacs. I know it sounds like a conspiracy (and it is only a theory), but this would explain why some people - and quite a few at that - had to exchange computers so many times (recycling returns would be good for the Apple bottom line as well).

"red tint"? Shall I return it? Please tell me your opinion. It's my fourth replacement.

Thank you.

That's quite an accusation (but makes sense)

Wouldn't that be extremely illegal?

Saying that today I received my 5th iMac (3rd 2010 model. Tried twice last winter as well) and it does indeed have a yellow tint on the lower half.
I would say that of the 5, this one has the most consistent gradient and probably has among the least intensity of yellow (3rd was pretty faint but extended way up the screen). Regardless it's unacceptable. I'm really at a loss. Simply put the bottom doesn't look like the top! I think I'll return for a refund and think about it for a bit. At least until the rumored os x 10.7 comes out later in the month.

In addition the hard drive is a bit ticky/clunky.
How do I see which one I have?
Which are the ones known to be good and which are known to be bad?

Yeah, not too good. I adjusted center to neutral grey and low right corner was missing ~15% red and ~4% blue.

2nd imac all is well

my first imac was a refurbished 3.06 base unit. I received it and it was yellow on the bottom 3rd and was really yellow in the bottom right. I tried to ignore it and couldn't do it. So i started up the chain. Eventually i got to one especially keen customer service ninja in Austin, TX. This woman was awesome. She had me reload the yellow screen update. Nothing. So she said, i'll make you an appointment at the apple store to exchange it. I get to the willow bend plano, tx store, and what do i see, a brand new imac. Remember i bought a refurbished one originally. Also this one is a week 41 that has a assembled in USA tag on it. S/N starts with QP. I had read about week 41 imacs and was pretty hopeful. I got it home and its like night and day with the first one. There are no imperfections, noises or other issues. Hope you others have an experience like i did. In my case, emailing steve jobs worked. He had his ninja's hook a brother up. I know steve was a part of it when the very nice woman said, "steve jobs wanted me to give you a call." i think what made this happen is the fact that i was very nice, respectful and never lost my cool. I was just not satisfied with the product i bought, as it didn't live up to the standards of my powermac g4, powermac g5(which i ended up hating due to bad engineering and premature processor failure), or my old 20 inch cinema display. They respected that, and i never once argued with anyone, just told them that i will return it and wait for the next generation that might not have this issue. Thank god as my dual 533 g4 is a beating to do anything on.:apple:

Is any screen perfect?

Has anybody ever experienced the perfect screen with absolutely, 100% uniform white? Even my Dell screen here at work is yellow at its right edge, however I have only seen it after doing the test with the grey bars.

Wouldn't that be extremely illegal?

It's not illegal. They can replace an opened product with a new or a refurbished one, at their discretion, or even repair the original one. It would be illegal to sell a refurbished product as brand new in the original sale.

One advantage of buying from the likes of Bestbuy, or even an Apple retail store is that you will get a new one in exchange.

FOUR replacements. That is the problem.

I would've asked for a refund after the third machine. This is absolutely ridiculous that Apple is selling such a flawed monitor. It's no picnic to have to deal with multiple deliveries and returns.

This past week I got a 27" Imac I5, to replace my 2008 24" Imac. My old Imac had some yellow screen tint, but wasnt bad enough for me to make a fuss about it.

The new one, I cant tell any yellow screens...

You will have to photograph the screen. A picture grab shows only the information forwarded by the graphics processor.

To all of you who are going through so much hassle: There are decent screens out there! I hope you manage to find one and Apple finally does something about this crap in the next iMac revision!

Apple should have already fixed this as this is already the next iMac revision since the problem originally appeared.

Grrr.

Bit the bullet last night and figured they must have fixed it by now... right? WRONG.

First one was a week 28. Yellow. Took a while to convince Best Buy idiot squad. Stupid girl at the counter said she didn't see anything for 10 minutes, then someone else said he sees something and only then she goes "oh yeah I think I see it".

Replaced for a week 30 or 32. Same thing. Went to a different BB, they refused to exchange, so I had to go to yet another store where they immediately saw it and exchanged. So now I'm on my third one (week 26) and still yellow.

And here's the thing, not only is it yellow, putting the brightness around the 50% mark produces a whizzing/whistling/buzzing noise. Lo and behold a google search turns up a 31 page thread at Apple's own forum (http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2209558&start=0&tstart=0)

This is completely unacceptable! Now I'm out of stores to return this pissed-on screen to and my only two options are to fight with those jerks at BB for a refund or "live with it". Both options make me cringe. $1200 headache

What pissed me off most was the Apple rep (or whatever. Works at the Apple section at BB) completely disregarded this yellowing and even claimed he never heard of such a thing.. GIVE ME A BREAK. And if you never heard of it what are you doing working at the Apple section?? I knew about it before I even took the chance and bought the iMac

What I might do is just refund it and go to an Apple store and try playing the exchange game there. But BB price matched my Mac to Amazon at $1150 total so I'm saving $~180 (tax), something Apple store refused to do

I feel for you!

If you can't get a store to give you your money back, try writing Best Buy corporate. I wrote them once over something less serious, a clerk had ruined my items by putting "pick up stickers," all over them.

They were crazy kind to me at corporate.

Do you need a new Mac right now? If so, I feel for you. If you can wait, you might want to do that.

It seems all LCDs right now are doing this. I've seen complaints on HP screens, samsung screens, etc. talking about the yellow or uneven color across the screen.

The only good screens you can get right now are iPad, iPhone, and MacBooks.

For someone it bothers like you and me, I just don't think you'll ever find one. Every single one is this way.

A few are less significant, but none are perfect.
