Hi,

I just don't get this at all,

Does Apple not have any quality control anymore.
Surely with so many imac returns and yellowing issues it will be costing quite alot of lost revenue!
Also they must have quality control at their manufacturing plants where they for example pick out every 50th mac and test the quality of the whole product. So with so many yellowing Issues this should of been picked up by now!!!

I am now getting slightly worried as I have just ordered my first ever iMac 27 2.8 i5, with time machine, remote, basically a full set up.

I'll be a converted PC to Mac user so to speak and it's not cheap (well not here in the UK).
To think that my chances of getting a faulty product from the outset makes me quite worried especially for a company with a supposedly excellent reputtation regarding the quality of their products.

I suppose I can only wait and see now what I get delivered, but for me this is very worrying.

May I suggest not getting excited about potential problems if you have not gotten your machine yet.
When you get it and hook it up, do yourself a favor.....forget everything you have read on these forums. If you are convinced the system will have an issue, it will. Clear your mind, and enjoy and see if any problems jump out at you as opposed to looking for them.

He shouldnt have to be disappointed, either. The new iMacs will have some color inconsistency. This is for sure. How bad will depend on your luck and ability to detect it. The design (backlit) itself is prone to color issues and no matter how many iMacs your return or replace, they will all have some degree of yellow blemish. The computer is still very useable, of course. Just dont be upset when yours has some minor flaws. You should expect it. Things are never going to be perfect. Some people cant live with it and others can. But, I wouldnt recommend wasting time returning and replacing as they will all be more or less the same. Either keep it or buy a Windows-based computer or MacPro with a different monitor. I really do feel bad for those who have to endure this really crummy generation of iMacs.

As mine was classed as a custom order due to the i7, does this put it more or less at risk of yellowing (or not a factor)? It added 2 days to the shipout date, so not sure if they just grab an i5 stock and swap it out or it's batched separately.

Every machine will have some degree of display issue it seems.

Your i7 will not make that more or less likely, after all, this has being going on for a year now.

I think IndustrialSpace offers great advice.

You'll just have to wait and see if it bothers you or not. For you, I hope it won't! They are fantastic machines otherwise.

thought this would be helpful as data point: got this 21.5 iMac from Apple Store in London... I see yellow on the bottom under an angle (looking from top down) but when looking directly at the screen it seems ok (image below). Its a week 28 Shanghai production.

My previous one was week26 and had the common screen buzzing issue - even though store employee swore that I was the first to return for screen buzzing.

EDIT: this is quite strange - on my Lenovo PC the picture above looks perfectly fine, the same picture on my imac shows the yellow...

No, that is not as strange as it may seem. It shows that both screens are calibrated differently. Your PC screen is probably a bit blueish.

Can't really tell if the screen has a yellow tint on my week 39 iMac.
Not really bothered since I got Applecare.

Just got a refurb 21.5" i3. Display is lousy... has the yellowing issue, it's very noticeable.

As well, the blacks are awful. I was expecting black blacks, just like my iPhone 4, however the corners have a silvery effect, watching movies is very annoying, especially in dark scenes as all I can see is this frickin silvery effect.

Is there anything I can do? Are they replacing the panels with GOOD ones if people call in with complaints?

My latest replacement is a week 39 as well. There's VERY little yellowing. It's so little you won't notice it even if you look for it unless you're using that test linked in the first page.

Definitely get week 39 if you can.

I finally contacted Apple about mine. They had me unplug/restart/refresh. It seemed to make a little bit of a difference. I can't really notice as much now. Even though I have it I'm not too worried as unless I'm doing these types of tests I don't ever notice it. I don't really want them screwing around with replacing stuff in my Mac because it's been flawless so far (besides the tint issue).

Thought I would throw this out there.

Last week I received my refurbished 21.5" i3 from Apple. I was worried about yellow screen after reading all this. The computer is perfect. Glad I went ahead and got it, and didn't give in to the fear. Sorry to those who are less than satisfied.

What week is yours?

Does it emit a high pitched whine when your brightness is turned down from full?

Hi,

Well according to appleserailanumberinfo, my imac is No 1121 of week 44.

Cant see any yellowing but the bottom right and left hand corners seem to have lighter blacks (mainly bottom right).
But i think i can live with it!

awesome machine :D

Just got a new 21.5" i3 looks like a week 28.
Brought brand new this week and its quite yellow down the right handside

What is everyone doing about this problem these days ?

Earlier I was set on buying an iMac tomorrow (new). Is this screen thing an issue with current iMacs (the ones on the shelves at the store)?

How long does it take for the defects to show up?

I am thinking of sending mine back (well phoning apple care and see what they say!).
Before I do that going to go into an apple store and see if any other display iMacs have the same issue and also ask the staff about it.

All this time I have been worrying about the yellowing issue which is practically non existent but instead I have this silvery issue now!

:(

Done the call to Apple Care,

This was after going to the Trafford Centre store and ask about this silvering issue and they said it was not normal and best to send it back.

So thats it hopefully imac27 i5 No 2 will be ok.

I was about to get an imac when I saw this thread :(
I'm obviously worried about the yellow tint problem - is the problem apparent only when you've got a white background or is it generally visible whatever you do?

Completely new to macs btw :)

I was about to buy an iMac when I saw this thread. And then I went and bought an iMac. Beautiful display.

You don't know anyone here. Their opinion may not be the same as yours. You will never know if you like the computer until you buy one.

There is no simple answer to your question. Some people claim they had absolutely no problems and perfect picture, some were replacing their several times (4 - 6) and still wee not happy. My advice is go to a store and have a look at and play with a few on the display, you may be able to notice a yellow tinge, or maybe not. Than at least you'll know what to expect and if the unit you'll eventually get is satisfactory. And check the return/replacement/restocking fee policy of the store.

I was completely new to macs as well when I decided on buying an iMac (mid-2010). I was aware of the yellow tint issue but was convinced that I would get the best computer I have ever owned. And I did. Now this iMac has a little bit of that yellow tint on the bottom of the screen. However, it is only visible in those yellow tint tests and even then it does not exactly look like the color yellow -- it just looks like a warmer tone of white. I cannot see the yellow tint in normal use. If I really focus on the colours of, say, this page, I kinda see that the tone of color kinda changes a bit towards the bottom.

I think most people complaining about this issue (aside from those who have REALLY BAD yellow tinge) forget that these iMacs are otherwise great computers and there is no alternative in the Windows PCs for an iMac -- meaning a high-performance big screen computer that is super compact and stylish and has great functionality. Yes, the yellow tint issue is unaccaptable but it also is something that really counts only to those who demand absolutely perfect screens (graphics professionals). Now I could have replaced mine but I did not want to lose the best computer I've ever owned (yes, I mean even the quality of the display).

I would encourage you to go for it. If you get an iMac with a really bad yellow tinge, you can always replace it as Apple lets you do this. Hopefully you will get a perfect screen but if you don't and you get a screen that has a little bit of the yellow tinge... You have two choises: 1) either focus on the yellow tint tests or 2) actually use and be happy with your iMac.
