new 27" coming

Really really hope mine isn't yellowed.....

I could, not that i would, punch the CRT on my G4 Emac and it'd be fine ...technology is getting way too delicate:D

joking aside ... there is something to be said for that...i mean ive heard that you cant smoke etc (be a dust Nazi) around these screens to because of blurring? maybe the age of the all in one is over -- should have got the basic pro with a sony screen -- would have also got a proper graphics card too and actually, while im ranting, CRT screens seem to have a richness in colour (for Photoshop)...im sure some people wont agree but hey ho ...

I have a slight yellow tint and went into system preferences and calibrated the color of the display and used expert mode. I actually had to make adjustments at each level from the base settings to fine tune it, except left gamma at 2.2 and only slightly raised target white to D6600. It helped. Reminds me of all the discussions I read over at AVS forum with my Pioneer Plasma Elite series tv. Beautiful display, but even it has some flaws with the so called "dirty" screen appearance with pure white backgrounds. You will also find discussions in the LCD threads about yellow screen problems, etc. Luckily my yellow screen problem is not as bad as others, but is there if i really look for it.

Is it just me, or does mine have discoloration as well? It's not yellow, but it looks bluish to me.

Have you tried to calibrate it in the display settings? You can change the tones to something warmer if it suits you better...

So, bad scenario: I am waiting for more than 6 weeks to receive a iMac BTO 27". If it has a yellow tint, i can wait for six weeks again for a new machine?

sigh. got my 27 today and quickly looked over the yellow tint issue. I have it across the lower bottom like most people, but like a few others I don't think I want to play the sending/receiving game hoping for a perfect screen.

Quite frankly it doesn't bother me too much except for when I'm really paying attention to it. Though it is quite noticeable at lower brightness settings.

Dang i was hoping i could get used to it. But at night when there is little ambient lighting, i go on a forum i regularly visit and it's a grey and white theme with horizontal bars going across. The perfect thing to show up the white inconsistencies :(

And it kinda bugs me every so often. It's such a shame, this is my first Mac and i love it. I have a high end gaming pc which i used to upgrade every 3 months, but it hasn't even been turned on for 9 days. And i loved my PC, that's how much i like this.

But then it just lets me down. Icky, creamy, yellowy whites. It's actually the inconsistency which makes it so annoying. I don't have it as bad as most on here, just slightly. But I'd prefer the whole screen to be slightly yellow than just one blotch.

some pics.

Replace it for new one

Everyone should replace iMac if it has yellow tint issue - and yes its annoying doing photoshop work or even surfing the internet.

I had significant issues with my iMac, particularly given my issues got worse after the 14 day return policy.

Initially in Hong Kong Apple offered the repair route - I was most annoyed given I'd one iMac already in for screen replacement and this new 27in i5 3.1 was to be its work replacement.

After a couple more attempts in Asia, I was transferred to customer relations in Ireland and the issue was remedied after 30 mins on the phone with Apple being most apologetic about the matter.

To sum up, the iMac should perform flawlessly at least within the first 4 weeks - if it does not, Apple should replace them - after a month, I accept that repairs may be the route to go.

However, given I'm getting a replacement for 27in i5 3.1, I've decided to upgrade to a BTO option and move to i7 3.4 processor and 2G of VRAM.

I have no need for SSD, but would like to increase HDD size - I can hopefully do this a little later by going to a 3T WD - our local repair centre will replace for around US$25.00 - I also get to keep original drive which can be utilised as a time machine - just waiting for 3T prices to drop a little more.

Even with all the nonsense, once you have a fully functioning iMac they are great machines, especially the latest 27in for DTP - a Mac Pro is overkill now for the work I actually undertake.

Also hoping to move from 12G of RAM to 16G once I have a few spare pennies - can I use the 2011 DDR3 1333 in the late 2009 iMac - any yes I know its 1066, but hoping it will accept 1333 RAM, bring me up to 8G in my one iMac 21.5.

Another one bites the dust

Another yellow tint victim here. I received my iMac last week; it is a 27'' i7 refurb from late 2009. I knew of this problem from this forum, but took a chance. Low and behold, I got one that is pretty bad (on the lower third, then blotching to the middle) . I will be exchanging it, and hoping that I can get one that is legitimate. I write papers, perform color editing on photos, and work a little in PS and Illustrator and the yellowing is a complete distraction. I cannot believe anyone would want to try and "live with it"...

Also, I discovered something while transferring my files the he new machine (which makes me not want to give this one up); it came with a 2tb HDD instead of the stock 1tb. It was such a pleasant surprise, only to then observe the yellow tint. Does anyone know why there was an extra 1tb in the machine??? It states on the label of the box just 1tb as well-maybe a BTO?

Oh Apple...

Boxes don't list BTO specs, your refurb was BTO with 2TB. Pay attention to what you buy next time.

OK, that's what I was thinking. I was paying attention, as the online ordering did not specify it was a BTO refurb (or reflect it in the price). I didn't add the 1tb to the order at checkout either. I essentially got an extra 1tb for free...It didn't cost me anything more...:)

I think my new 27" iMac also has the yellow tinge, especially near bottom left (see attachment).

Since I bought the computer several weeks ago (maybe a month ago), the Genius bar says that they will replace the screen for me - though just once. I can't get a computer replacement.

With the screen I have, is it worth the chance to get a screen replacement, or should I live with what I've currently have?

BTW- I took a "screen shot" of my screen. Is this the best way to display the image on this forum, or should I take a photo of the screen itself? The "screen shot" seems to remove the yellow tinge.

Woo boy.

Might be helpful to actually read the posts in the thread you are replying to.

No you can't just take a screen shot. You need to take a picture of the display.

Let's not get into why it's so damned silly.

I've read many posts in this thread, though certainly not all of them. So I guess the screen capture doesn't work. I'll post an actual photo of the screen soon. Thanks.

You're kidding, right?

Yes, you need a picture of the screen, not a screenshot. That would look perfect on another computer (as long as it's not another Apple screen).

Ok. Here's a "photo" of my screen.

Again, the Genius Bar says that they will replace the screen, but just once. Is it worth the risk of getting a better screen? Is there any problem associated with the Apple Store replacing a screen locally?

I see yellow tingle at the bottom of the screen, especially near the bottom left. But, having come from a nice NEC LCD3090 monitor, I don't know what to expect and accept from an Apple monitor.

Most of the posts i have read where people have had the screen replaced have reported back that's it's the same or worse... with the added bonus of finger prints and dust under the glass from the technician who did the repair.

Maybe you will get lucky though... shame its all a lottery really... a very expensive, time consuming lottery!

Thanks. Not only am I concerned about quality of the replaced screen itself, but the care taken to replace the screen. I'm not sure I'm willing to subject my computer to dust, fingerprints, etc. for nominal screen improvement at best.

So, based on the screen photo, would you have the screen replaced? A computer replacement isn't an option since I purchased the computer about a month ago; at the time, I was finishing the school year as a teacher and then was out-of-town for a couple of weeks - thus the delay in setting up and examining the computer.
