Mmh, have you never been so unsure about something that you decided to ask for different opinions?

Thats all I wanted to do here, ask for different opinions. :)

But anyway, I am going for a refund, just 30 Minutes after I posted this, the harddrive started making strange, ticking noises...

Maybe its a bomb? :)

Cyas,

Dennis

good choice, well done.

Based on your that photo it would be hard to tell wether it had a yellow tinge or not - I certainly cannot give you any qualified opinion on that. Also be wary of comments left by, archipellago, he has a very anti Apple agenda he constantly pushes and his reputation on this forum doesn't count for much. Regarding HDD, remember your iMac is probably indexing it's content for Spotlight therefore it will initially be a litltle noisy as it does this and then it should hopefully quieten down. Same with iPhoto, while it initially does it's face recognition you can hear HDD activity but once it has done this initial scan it will quieten down.

Personally I wouldn't, in a knee jerk fashion, request a refund, rather use the iMac for two or three days then then make a qualified call on it. If at the end of this time you aren't happy then you can still request a refund.

Thanks for the insight here. :)

Well, I personally don't have any problems with listening to different opinions, be them biased or not. I have been (and am) an avid Windows-PC User as well as Mac User. Best of both worlds you might say...

Anyway, I can recreate the "funny" noise of the HDD. Mostly when I put the iMac to sleep of I wake it up. Right before the HDD starts reading you hear 2 low-pitched "claks", as if someone was snapping their fingers below the table or something...

So I talked to AppleCare again and I won't go for a refund. She convinced me to keep the iMac until I get a new replacement unit which will arrive in approx. 2 weeks and will be build from scratch and hopefully without an error or tinge. Then I'll return No. 4 and have a full functional Number 5.

If not, she said, she actually HAS to cancel the order, since their system apparently only allows up to 4 replacement orders, or something like that.

Well, I'll keep you posted, appreciate the help,

Dennis

I think it's great to ask for other opinions, Dennis. I would never advise someone to avoid doing so. It was the part where you said

hopeing you guys could also tell me if I should keep it or cancel it altogether.

that I was questioning. :)

Your eyes are the only ones that matter after all.

But anyway, I am going for a refund, just 30 Minutes after I posted this, the harddrive started making strange, ticking noises...

That's definitely not good. Have you run a Disk Utility verify and repair on the drive?

Yeah, I know, but those bastards keep playing tricks on me... ;)

No, I haven't run one, but like I said, the noises occur when the HDD-Drive powers up or down, like Wake-Up or Reboot...

And since I got the machine today and the only thing I did was install the patches, I am not sure, what I could repair there...

But maybe I'll give it a try.

Cheers,

Dennis

Sorry if you mentioned this already, Dennis, but does your iMac have the 1TB Seagate? There is often a click of death with those when they fail. But it usually happens any time the HD is accessed and not just wake up or reboot. Anyway, loud clicks are NEVER good with HDs.

Yeah, thats what I thought so, too. And yes, its the 1TB Version of the iMac 27". So far I only notice the "Click of Death" (great name btw) when powering up or down, because I have accessed any programs yet, just the OS.

Well, hopefully Number 5 is alive. Then I even get a discount...

But overall, I have to admit I am quite disappointed with the whole procedure with AppleCare etc...

But that is another topic entirely. :)

Cheers,

Dennis

For me I'm disappointed in the issues many of us have experienced with this version of the iMac, HOWEVER I've been very impressed with AppleCare after sales service.

The AppleCare experience has actually been good to me. I'm on my 4th screen (three iMacs and one replaced screen) and this last one appears to be a keeper. It isn't perfect, but its close. I will say that it is much better than the pic you posted - I saw the tinge right away without enlarging the pic. I swear the some people's eyes are 'calibrated' differently than others; some swear they can't see it and for others, it pops right out.... and I'm to the point where I believe them both. And as stated earlier, it's YOUR eyes that count here.

I know it's frustrating, but Windows 7 is the alternative, and I don't think its "there" yet. I could use Windows 7, but I don't WANT to use it everyday at this point. Linux? I love UNIX in general (which is why I enjoy OS X so much...) but not for my only home system. The only reason I mention this is that the OS quandary was a big part of what kept me on the Apple side of the fence.

But the real reason I posted was to say the in my experience, AppleCare has been the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal process. If it weren't for them, I don't think I would have lasted through two machines. Overall, they have been pleasant, professional, and sympathetic to my plight. The typical customer service experience doesn't even come close these days.

Good luck to all who continue to deal with this!

Great. When I just got off the phone with that same AppleCare who just told me to call my local store everyday and once they have the LCD in stock I can make an appointment to hopefully get a replacement? What kind of service is this?

Hi guys,

I went back to the store yesterday to get a third time exchange for my 21.5" iMac. Finally I was able to get one that actually looks acceptable. It is far from perfect but a lot better than what I got before.

Apple's customer service rocks. They addressed my issue professionally and in a timely manner... for a third time though:rolleyes:

Anyways, the guy who took care of my iMac was very kind. He turned on the iMac and was like: "Oh my god, that screen looks awful". He walked away from me and in less than 2 minutes I had a new sealed iMac. We actually tested it out before I left the store.

Again, it is not perfect or as good as I expected but it is certainly a lot better... Maybe I'm already paranoid with so much running back and forth to the store... Time will tell.

My believe is that there is a massive problem with these IPS screens/panels and they haven't been able to figure out what's causing this problem or simply they realized of the issue existence once they had millions of iMacs out of the production lines.

I get a loud clicking sound as well when I put the iMac to sleep, I presume it comes from the HDD, do others get this noise or not? Is it something to worry about?

I swear the some people's eyes are 'calibrated' differently than others; some swear they can't see it and for others, it pops right out.... and I'm to the point where I believe them both.

Yes, I think it is true. 20% or so of the male population has some grade of color blindness. Some male friends and collegues of me can't see green or light colors.

My 21.5" has the tinge in the lower right corner. I took it in to my local Apple Store to get it looked at. The Genius changed my wallpaper to plain white and agreed that there was a tinge. The only problem was that there were no replacement parts on hand, so I have to wait ~10 days before I have to bring my system back in to get it taken care of.

not at all, I hate people/companies profiting or gaining from lies and spin and the constant pushing of falsehoods...

that is all Apple's marketing is these days

My sig. reflects a truthful statement of fact. Sorry if it offends you.

Mac OSX is inherently less secure than Vista or 7. of course Apple pushes the..you are more secure and can browse without worries on a Mac lie.

it isn't true. the success of OSX against malware has ZERO to do with the OS and everything to do with the worldwide Mac marketshare being less than 4%.

if the marketshares between OSX and Windows were reversed then the internet would be completely lawless.

Apple has found an angle it can leverage, and is doing so. But they lie and spin and make it up. The really tech savvy know this.

and with regards great customer service it makes me laugh at how little you guys on your 3rd or 4th machines value your time sorting this out.

it is laughable.

the customer service lauded as being outstanding post sale is the same customer service that knowingly ships you a dud machine which you then have to spend your time sorting out.

why do they do it?

cos not everyone will notice....simple. Its an awful way to treat loyal customers.

Apple know there is one born every minute.... they must read these boards. :p;)

Week 7 iMac 27"

I'm glad I found this forum! I'm on my third replacement iMac and still see the issue. I contacted the Apple store I purchased it at today and they told me no more exchanges...I can bring it in for a full refund, or live with it. Nice! So I'm posting my pic to see what the consensus is. To me it almost looks like the tip of a candle flame, running top to bottom and spreading out to affect the lower right corner. The pinkish hue is from my camera. In iPhoto when I adjust the saturation to the left, it looks perfect. To the right, the defect shows more clearly. I really would like to keep my machine, and I would if there was a chance this would be addressed with firmware, but I highly doubt that at this point.

I can't see the problem on a colored background, it's only noticeable with full screen web browsers or solid colors, iTunes, finder windows, etc. Basically anywhere that's white will show it. I'm just curious what everyone else sees. :)

Thanks!

I have felt like I've had a small yellow tint in the bottom middle of the screen since I got my iMac on Sunday. I want to know what you guys think before I take it in. It's bothersome but I can't tell if I'm looking for something or if it's actually there.

I see a small yellow area in the middle towards the bottom and in the upper right quadrant. It's not bad tho, not as bad as some I have seen. Tough call. :(

Hmm, I hadn't notices the top right, seems like I can see it in my safari broswer but not on the bar, so it must be super small...

I'd obviously like to just take it in and get it replaced, but I've heard horror stories of dust under the glass, fingerprints, etc that make me question whether or not it's worth it...damn...

It's fairly small as these things go. I would give it a few more days of use and see if it bothers you. If you bought it at a retail store you have 14 days I believe to exchange it. Mine is much more pronounced....you should have seen the first two! I think I'm going to take it in tonight for a full refund and just wait a couple of weeks...I don't like that Apple today told me to "just live with it"...I expect more from them and for what I paid, it should be flawless. :)

Week 8 - horrendous yellow bars a couple of centimeters thick from the top to the bottom. This machine is going back and I will ask for a full refund. I'm really sick and tired of this whole experience.

We're still in the 7th week of the year so how did you get a week 8? They don't exist yet. Best of luck to you at any rate. I think you're making the right decision. :)

Do we have any idea at this point in time exactly what percentage of customers are getting duff iMacs?

Is it indeed the case that there are a large number of individuals that just don't notice the yellow tinge and that the discoloration is actually present on the majority of machines?

I find it unbelievable (but I do believe it!) that some people are on their 4th or 5th machine and it's still not sorted! I can only draw from this that there must be a huge number of machines out there with this problem.

I've just been notified that my machine has shipped, estimated delivery no later than 3rd March, dear god, please don't let me have this hassle - I'm a sodding perfectionist and if it isn't right, it'll be refund time, first time around!

This is really scary, that puts me off of buying an iMac altogether well for now anyway, its strange though, went into local mac shop and imacs on display dont even have a tint of yellowishness, i suppose the staff are aware of the problem and just put on display yellow-less models.

Just a crazy though if apple is flooded (some people are on their 5th or 6th machine by now) with faulty imacs.

What do you think happens to them, dont you think apple just repackages them and sells them to the next average Joe the consumer who couldn't care less about yellow stuff.

Saw with my own eyes when one careless punter asks customer assistant can macs run Autocad, when guy replies yes of course it can run anything you can run on windows. :)

Decision time, when do you think rev. B will start shipping ?
