Here are pictures of my first iMac i5 week 46 (the week full of yellowing) bought from the Apple store in London (Regent Street). I am satisfied as is and will probably ask for a replacement much later if I feel I can do considerably better.

I have been lurking on macrumours for a while reading people's issues and I wanted to return the favor by showing what I have. What do you think of this?

The picture was taken by a Nokia N95. I am also bad at photography and do not know how to adjust the camera.
Through heavy, controversial manipulation ;), I came up with the attachments of your two photos. Yours like pretty good except for some right side yellow and makes me think twice about keeping mine.

Now, having said that they look good, I'll add this caveat. Some cameras tend to clip the extremes, especially when shooting JPEGs. The two photos following yours are from my iMac i5, but shot RAW. The first one on the left looks fine doesn't it? But check out the next one after contrast, exposure and some saturation have been futzed with. RAWs will have all the information the image sensor can capture, so its possible (eh, probable) that your Nokia isn't recording everything on screen. Know anyone with a dSLR? (If you want to go down the rat-hole that is) :D

While mine looks craptastic after manipulating the heck out of it, you don't notice anything in daily use. And since nothing else is wrong with my iMac: stuck or dead pixels, whining or buzzing, excessive black screen bleed etc. I'll probably just keep it rather than go through the lottery system 4 or 5 times hoping to get a good one like others are doing. Not until Apple can basically guarantee the problem is solved (which might mean a vendor other than LG??).

I'm just not sure all this is enough to get worked up over.

Wow, that was more than I can ask for. That is a very neat thing you did there. Yes, the camera I have is rubbish (will start on a DSLR when I cn afford to). However, I did originally notice the bottom right yellowing, although I do not look at that corner very often lol. However, the rest of the image does after saturation does not represent what its truly like as most of the screen is good.

I must confess, I originally bought a dual core iMac that had a faulty superdrive and other weird problems. But I can tell you, the image quality on that was far superior and if it was not for the better hardware, I would have regretted returning it. It was a week 41 btw. Also, this iMac uses a replacement screen but looks exactly the same as the one it replaced.

I think I will wait until summer and get it replaced then once this issue dies down a bit and things get sorted.

Brought mine in for a second try to repair it - the service guy did not hear anything of a fix or different part for the 21" concerning yellowing or buzz.

He will try and order 3 panels in a row for me - if this won't help, I dunno. First&Last Mac then, I guess!

I just bought my 27 i5 out of san diego yesterday. I took it home and did the test, and i've got alot of faint yellow near the bottom of the screen, it's a week 8 out of china.

Mine was fixed by a tech yesterday. It's perfect. He replaced the LCD and said "there was a production problem with the old ones."

I hope it's true but i doubt it.

Even if it is true that is a Hassle to have to take your brand new iMac down to your local Apple Store for LCD Screen replacement. Why can't they fix it at the production line. Just replace the LCD Screens that are in the production line and send that bad ones back to the manufacturer. Problem solved.

What is so hard in that? Instead they are depending on the customer to complain and when they do , they ask them to bring it in for repair. For those who don't care about the yellow problem and will live with it then Apple does not have to worry about them.

I guess I will wait for the next rollout of the new iMacs and hope they get it right then next time.

Okay, the problem with the logic in your post is that some people on here, MR, that have earlier models like week 46-50 have reported here that their screens are good and without yellow tinge. So according to you, Apple should just assume that every one of their iMacs being sent out are bad and they should just open them up and fix them before selling them. Well, that can cost a company a lot of money by just "assuming". It makes more economical sense for a company to repair as each customer complains.

There's another point to this, no 2 LCD's will be exactly the same in terms of uniformity and regardless if Apple has "fixed" the issues, an anal/OCD customer might still complain about yellowing even though the most astute person in terms of LCD monitors might see it as "perfect".

...me too...

Hi all,

Little annoyed here, never bought a Mac before, always been PC... however I have recently got into iPhone development via a Hackintosh, saw the new 27" iMac's and took the plunge. I bought mine from the local PC World (pcworld.co.uk) - last one in the shop! (Meant to be right?)

Anyway, I noticed webpages/whites on the right hand side of the screen showed a yellowy off-white... didn't try the black test until now, but that looks bad too?

It's killing me, I absolutely LOVE the machine, and have no problems with the 1378 GBP it cost me EXCEPT I'd like it to be perfect for that price - I could get the same PC for 400 GBP minus monitor!!!

What do you guys think of these pics, and where is the first port of call for a replacement - ideally I'd like to hold onto this Mac until I get a new one, as I've now ditched the old family PC!!!

Spoke with Apple again today. Having had my screen replaced and the problem now being worse, I am looking to exchange my machine or have a refund so I can buy a different machine and standalone screen.

Standard service is for a repair to be issued again. They said that a repair agent shouldn't be sending a machine back out if the fault is still there as there's rigorous testing done before its released. I explained that the OS X screensaver had been activated, so I'm assuming they used that to test the screen, the problem being that the yellow tinge isn't always visible, due to being dependent on lighting conditions and what you're actually viewing on-screen at the time.

So, to cut a long story short, no resolution. I need to call the Apple Store I bought the machine from now to see if they'll do a refund. Unfortunately its a 3 or 4 hour drive away from me, so its not the best. I was hoping they could rectify this without additional expense to me tbh.

Has anyone else been in this position who can let me know how things panned out for them?

Thanks.

are you in the UK or US..?

I just got my week 09 (my 5th screen), and lo and behold it still has the tinge. Way to royally **** this up Apple.

Honestly, I'm sorry to hear that you are going through troubles with your machine, however I have to ask. Why would drive 3-4 hours to an Apple store to buy it in the first place when you could've easily bought in on Apple's online store? This way you easily send it back for a refund. Common sense would say not to buy something that expensive from so far away not knowing if you have issues that you might end up having to bring it back.

Confused

Hi

I am a complete newbie just made the switch from a PC to a MAC so if i say somthing which is repeated or just sounds absurd please take it with a grain of salt.

Heres my story.. I bought the 27" i5 imac on 30 Jan and took it home to find that it had a bunch of dead pixels by the middle of the screen, it also failed the yellow tint test but the dead pixels bothered me more.. so i took it back to the apple store and had it exchanged, the customer service was awesome they transfered whatever data i had on my hd to the new imac and also let me check the screen out right there in the store. The screen had no dead pixels along with the webcam, I also did the yellow test and it looked fine. I brought it home and love the machine right now..

The HDD gurgles a few times but after switching from a pc and noticing the whole machine on the whole is so silent it dosnt bother me when it make the noise when it reads and writes.

The wierd thing was when i did the yellow test at home i could notice a slight yellowish tinge at the bottom right hand corner, i think its really hard to test it properly at the stores because of the bright lights they have there to notice... anywayz im a programmer and use the mac for browsing and playing movies and stuff so i thought ill sit tight till they come out with a proper fix.

After reading gizmodos report where apple acknoledged they have addressed the yellow tinge problem i called apple care and they set up an appt at the store. I hauled the imac to the store and the genius there checked my serial number ( its a week 46 machine 2009) and informed me that the serial number is not part of the range for which the issue was reported, He did not argue with me if he could see the yellow tinge or not but the only solution he offered was to replace the display.

Here is my predicament, I have a back light bleed problem in the corners and i can notice the yellow tinge at home and not the stores, should i get the display change and risk getting a worse screen with dead pixels or just hand on the one i have.

Now i know people will say if you cant notice it whats the problem, Its just that investing 2000$ is quite a lot for me and you know having the machine replaced within a month of getting it just dosnt seem right.

Im just curious what you guys think and should i go ahead with the screen replacement?

Would you guys consider this bad? This is my third imac replacement - I wonder if i should try my luck with a LCD replacement. What determines whether they could do it on site or whether I need to bring to the store?

Add me to the list.

Received my i7 today. What a beauty! Unfortunately the iMac also has the yellow tinge, on the bottom/right, like so many of you out there. It's a week 09 model.

Ordered online on feb. 22 so delivery was pretty quick as it was originally scheduled to be delivered on march 12 (today is march 1).

But, it's going back, hoping for a better replacement machine.

I am looking to buy a 27" iMac. Is the issue with the yellowing/flickering confined to a certain set up, etc C2D or i5 or i7 or are all systems effected?
thanks, this will be my first mac and I want the experience to a good one.

Unfortunately with the reflections, it's kinda hard to discern what is what. :)

Not sure what Apple's policy is on checking the panel's out (might be country dependent too). I'm sure someone will chime in who's had the experience.

a week 9? so it's still a crapshoot. :(

I don't think the yellowing is tied to any processor run, it seems to be random with any of the 27" panels (and some 21.5"s too). The flickering has basically been solved by a firmware update.

Because I was working away from home last year in a town with an Apple Store.

Gray Banding at the bottom of the display continues to remain on just about every photo I see.

They can claim what they want....the displays continue to show imperfections that would hardly justify them being classified as "addressed"

Take a quick read:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/867965/

Depends on their definition of "addressed"...

I don't know whether to be hopeful or just accept the iMac is and will continue to remain a sub-par machine in terms of overall quality. As of yet, I haven't decided if I'll wait for the introduction of the new Mac Pros or just buy another iMac with reduced expectations.

I think it's the price point that's bugging me. I used a 21" iMac core solo for 4 years and the screen wasn't perfect, but I didn't let it bother me. It was "good enough". I didn't pay over $2k for it though. I sent my i7 packing, but other than that screen, it was a wonderful machine.
