I agreed that the characters are all one-dimensional, the plot is pretty singular and the whole movie feels over-exaggerated. However, as an action movie, the visual are very good and the pace is fast. Personally, I find it an ok movie, it's just a visual fest and nothing more. I guess it appeals to certain people, nothing wrong with that, we all have different likes and dislikes. :)

BTW, anyone has any good sites where I can get wallpapers of this movie? Those on the official site are not that good, but I like quite a few images from their screenshots, if only I can get them in widescreen wallpaper....

So, I was wondering... what movies have you made lately. I'd like to find an example of your work. You sound like you know what you are talking about. *Sarcasm*

Since when are people required to actually make movies to be allowed to criticize them? Last I checked most movie critics were not actually in the movie industry themselves...

I do coincidentally make short films, and have entered the odd small festival. I'm not saying I'm some film making master, but I do have some perspective.

I've seen and rated 402 movies on movielens. I'd like to think that gives me at least some credibility other than just being an armchair expert.

I went to see 300 to get a full-blow testosterone-fueled action movie, entertaining and fun. I enjoy hardcore action just as much as the next person, this one was just action put into such poor plot and character development that it reduced the value of what good action elements there were.

I do appreciate the art that went into the film, but I think that it winds up being fluff...art gone to waste in a movie that could have been so much better. Think bout how amazing 300 could have been with a couple of developed characters and a really good plot! 300 seems to me like a great painting...blown up and printed on plastic. Amazing potential to be incredible, but without any substance to make it worth watching.

edit: Even justifying it as an action movie doesn't really work...Die Hard leaves me satisfied and adrenaline rush-ed every time. :p

I thought it was going to be much better story and character-wise. Overall, I found it pretty forgettable.

HIRING:

We're looking for 300 of the buffest men in the world to be in a film. You must be 6'2" and taller; "8-pack" is a must.

HIRING:

We're also looking for 10,000 Persians, or people from Middle Eastern descent, to play extras/victims. In the film, you will all be required to die, and your ancestry will be made to look like a freak show. Hope you don't mind.

Correction: the 8-pack (or 6-pack if you're stingy) can just be sprayed on. Acting talent entirely optional.

actually the abs were real. all of the spartan actors went through a rigorous six week exercise program.

i thoroughly enjoyed the movie. maybe we should all give some credit to the actors even if we can't agree on taste. after all, they worked out in the gym four hours a day for six weeks to get the abs. nobody has even mentioned the whole acting in front of blue screens thing with very little help from a realistic environment.

I agree that they ripped off the wheat scene in Gladiator. It was a bit much at times. I was able to enjoy the work that went into it, and thought it was visually impressive.

...ok, I have to be a total girl and admit that I was almost drooling at one point. :p

I think all the criticism being channeled towards the film is a little unfair. But don't get me wrong, you can have your opinion.

When I saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2, I thought the movie was totally over the top, too long and really stupid, I hated it. But somebody pointed out that if I treat it like a Pantomime it would be better for it. That worked for me and as a very expensive and lavish Pantomime, its a better movie.

However for 300, I walked out of it feeling I had been cheated, I'd been denied all the elements that make a good movie, similar in vein to Braveheart and the like. However since this was adapted from a comic book what should I expect? I should expect an adaptation of a comic book of course with all the silly things that accompany a comic book!

So visually it was a treat to watch, everything else let it down just like in comics, the art is usually one of the better things representing that media, such things as plot are secondary. Comics are not shakespeare are they?

Its also probably one of the reasons why I stopped reading comics, apart from the visuals, what else is there to draw you in? (excuse the pun)

Bah!! You loved it for "gay" reasons. ;)

Not that I didn't notice the guys with the bumpy chests.

Hey now! You guys get T&A all the time from Hollywood. We have to settle for muscular hippies in loincloths. :) Actually, those guys aren't my type- too many longhairs. ;) But I guess I have to take what I can get.

Did the Spartans actually really only fight with only a (admittedly very well designed ) shield, helm and metal bracer's? or was Frank Millers idea to have them so lightly armoured?

Was wondering that as i left the cinema.

Pffft.......how about the fact that there were only 300 of them. Yes, 300 Spartans, but how many "slaves" (aka: working class)? From the movie, it looks like there were 20 regular working class fighting with them. :p

I'm not saying that what the Spartans did was unimpressive. It obviously was, even if you use more realistic numbers, but lets not get into how realistic it was. There were no freaks, there were no 9 foot tall Persian guys with too much makeup and jewellery.

Actual Spartans ran around in some of the heaviest armor ever deployed on infantry. They were a solid wall of bronze and pain. Their tactics were to push into the enemy. The people in the back actually pushed the ones in the front and the extra armor gave extra momentum.
