This is one of those features that didn’t get the proper promotion. Before I upgraded to the X from my 6+ I didn’t understand the hype of 3D Touch when intro’d with 6Ss. After finally having the functionality I don’t see how I lived without it (okay dramatic, but still).

Super useful feature, but it wasn’t well advertised so a lot of people don’t even know it exists hence developers not implementing it much. Also it just became random guessing for what you could/n’t actually press on which made it even more frustrating, but when you found apps that did support it, it dramatically changed my workflow. Now I wanna peek/pop everything if I can lol

Haven’t tried haptic and while I think haptic would be great for iPads (don’t know how many times I’ve accidentally hard pressed my iPad), I really hope iPhones keep 3D. It may be a little niche, but it’s super useful imo

I knew this whole 3D touch thing was kind of pointless considering my Android device could have the same contextual menus and you get a nice haptic feel when those menus come up. No point in making a specialized display that will cost more than an equal display in quality when you can achieve the same feature all through software. I've only had one iPhone with 3D touch and I never utilized it.

Haptic Touch is trash. The biggest loss will be the keyboard features of 3D Touch. Sure, you can do that stupid trackpad mode by long pressing the spacebar, but you can't and won't ever be able to select text with Haptic Touch. That's my biggest use of 3D Touch so it will be a huge loss. Guess I will be getting an XS for the next couple of years if the next flagship iPhone doesn't have 3D Touch included...

That's sad. It’s one of the reasons I refused a free “upgrade” to the iPhone XR potato. Haptic touch is a lame excuse for 3D Touch because of latency and lack of features. I hope at least they won't totally ditch peek and pop, quick actions etc.

Historically Apple is great at introducing innovations and horrible at utilising, sustaining and expanding them (from MagSafe to 3D Touch and from Siri to the iPad smart connector). Instead of using them in spades to create a truly unique Apple experience, they let them die on the vine and expediently patch together some Android features or existing App Store/Cydia apps into an ever-unchanging iOS to deliver their annual "update".
Yep. This is Apple under Tim Cook.

Something like this would be my guess, especially after seeing the clip I posted.

We’ll get the answer soon.
Didn’t see your video. That’s awesome and thanks for the preview. I’m really looking forward to iOS 13 and I agree, I bet the implementation just gets better and better.

Actually that is incorrect as has been pointed out in this thread. You CAN select using Haptic Touch, by long press, and using a finger to select the letter or word(s). Haptic Touch is going to work great and be as useful as 3D Touch.

People equating space bar text selection to 3D Touch obviously have never truly used 3D Touch word/sentence/paragraph selection. It's not even close and I wish people would stop saying it's the same.

My son has an Xr and I have an X. Being able to quickly select a word, sentence or paragraph with 3 quick subtle touches with 3D Touch is significantly faster and easier than having to awkwardly bring up another finger to get into selection mode.

I have no problem with them expanding the actions using Haptic Touch. Just don't eliminate 3D Touch for those of us that use it religiously and know Haptic Touch isn't close to being the same.

Earlier this month, it was reported that 3D Touch will not be supported by 2019 iPhones. This rumor was surfaced by a team of Barclays analysts after they traveled to Asia and spoke with multiple Apple suppliers, likely meaning that there is evidence of 3D Touch being removed at the hardware level.

Now, on the software side, there are changes that suggest the rumor is accurate. It really looks like pressure-sensitive 3D Touch is going away.

Apple has confirmed that both "Quick Actions" menus that float above app icons on the home screen and "Peek" previews of emails, links, messages, and more are now supported on any iPhone or iPad that can run iOS 13 or iPadOS. These features were previously exclusive to iPhones with 3D Touch.

Apple's feature list for iOS 13 and iPadOS

Both features rely on a long press, aka pressing and holding, meaning this is effectively an expansion of the Haptic Touch functionality that debuted on the iPhone XR last year. Haptic Touch is simply a marketing term for a long press combined with haptic feedback from the Taptic Engine.

Notably, this means Quick Actions menus and Peek previews are now supported on the iPhone XR and the iPad Air 2 or newer for the first time ever.

The ability to invoke Quick Actions menus and Peek previews with a long press in iOS 13 is even supported on iPhones with 3D Touch, including the iPhone XS models, likely foreshadowing the removal of 3D Touch from 2019 iPhones.

3D Touch can still be used in iOS 13 on iPhones that support the feature, resulting in two ways to invoke Quick Actions menus. This includes the iPhone 6s through iPhone XS Max, excluding the iPhone SE. However, some users are unable to access 3D Touch settings in the first iOS 13 beta, which is likely a bug.

The transition from 3D Touch to Haptic Touch for Peek previews was hinted at a few weeks ago. As noted by developer Radek Pietruszewski, open source WebKit commits revealed that the APIs for the feature, previously known as Peek and Pop, would be deprecated in a future iOS version.

All in all, there is a strong possibility that 2019 iPhones will feature Haptic Touch instead of 3D Touch when they are released later this year.

Does anyone use the HIGHLIGHT feature with 3D Touch?? I use this daily! You can’t mimic this with haptic touch.

Try it please!

Step 1: force touch keyboard.
Step 2: let go of force but still continue to touch.
Step 3: force touch again and drag cursor to highlight selection.

Don’t get rid of 3D Touch!!!

My favorite part of 3D Touch is turning the keyboard into a trackpad to easily make a change in something you’ve typed, I use it everyday.

^ This. Still using 7 Plus for this feature.
Hope that 2019 iPhones will somehow have this feature rolled.

You can’t select text “by just holding down the space bar”.....
True, but if you tap with a second finger, the cursor will start selecting text while you move around. So even without 3D Touch, it's fast and accurate.

I still can't believe ipads lack haptic touch/feedback.......something my main android tablets always had.....

This just blew my mind — yes you actually can: just also tap the keyboard with another finger and it selects stuff under the cursor.

Call me a shoddy typist but selecting text or moving the cursor using 3D Touch is something I use pretty much every time I type on my phone. Including this text.

Ugh. 3D Touch is great, use it all the time.
Me too but... this post is the proof forums are just for whining. In every other thread over the years most users said 3D Touch was useless, Apple should remove it etc... now we will whine because 3D touch is cool and handy.

This is far better. Time has demonstrated that the intricate accuracy of touch pressure has proved worthless with no useful applications for it surfacing.

All of the usefulness of 3D Touch has been demonstrated by these kinds of features...100% of which could have been (and should have been) accomplished with Long Press on every device.

Now, that is coming full circle, and we'll all be much better off for it.
It is not the same. 3D Touch is instant, and many loves it, I will miss it.

So you have to use two fingers or two hands to do the thing I can currently do with one...? Still trash...

Wow, one thumb on the space bar, the other moving the cursor to select text. Damn that is rough...
So I guess everyone just uses their phones with two hands at all times? Anything that adds an extra hand or finger is a step backwards...

Not really worth getting this year's iPhone if it doesn't have 5G so you can be future- proof for it.
