I'm interested to see if they up the per-month charge. As of right now, the per-month charge is FAR cheaper than any other ATT data package offering (and pretty much any other provider, except for helio, i suppose). I assume this is because it's not 3G? Or is ATT keeping the others higher as part of a deal with apple?

I am really happy with my ATT service and actually have better service than I did before. ATT will hold the key as to people's willingness to move to a 3G phone. With a data service plan like they provide today, I'll switch the day it is available. However, if there is a significant price increase, I can continue to use the phone that meets my needs. (I can't wait for exchange support) - wow!!

I would really love the new iPhone to come out in June, but I'm still skeptical about how well the new iPhone will bode for the consumer with possibly the same existing price. I also will not be sure unless I hear about ALL the specs of the iPhone 2.0 (not just the 3G and the Contact search). Nevertheless, the price will be bound to come down somehow after it is released; its a fairly normal trend in business that no one should really be alarmed by. Overall, I probably will be less excited about the 2nd generation of the iPhone than the first one, since we should have had 3G and contact searching when it was first released.

Can someone tell me where all these 'cheap' cell phone unlimited voice and unlimited data plans are? When I switched to the iphone (and thus ATT) my monthly bill actually went down (keep in mind I need a nationwide plan with upwards of 1800 minutes/month + 1000 or so texts + unlimited data). The only thing ATT plans are lacking at the moment is a decent price for texting. But, with Sprint now having a $99 unlimited everything plan, I can see ATT following not far behind.

Maybe people are looking for dirt cheap plans with 100 minutes, no data, no texting just so they can say they have an iphone?

A 3.5G phone would also support all the previous generation standards, falling back to them where the newer standard hadn't been rolled out yet. However the newer standard may make use of better error correction mechanisms where it is rolled out.

So your reception won't get worse, unless the antennae were worse inside the device, or the device reduced the signal more than a previous generation.

Didn't that lame-o poster for WW--whatever it is, say that it was everything mac, everything iPhone? So why wouldn't they launch, I don't think its insane if they introduce it seeing they are trying to market the iPhone to large companies.

And if the less plastic look is true, then that picture of the "new" iPhone can be tossed out.

Regardless, I cannot wait for it to come out, I am using my tax return to get it!!!!

It'd probably just be more sensitive. I was playing with an iPod Touch in bed this morning and sometimes it wouldn't rotate to landscape, needing a little shake.

That's just a software tweak. I've played with some of the 3rd party apps that use the sensor and it is amazingly accurate and responsive. There is a marble maze game that uses just the sensor that almost feels real.

unlikely that they will keep the 8gb model because if they can fit 32gb in the ipod touch they can do it in the iphone. but then again they could keep the 8 gb and add the 32 gb but unlikely

I thought that the reason Apple fit 32GB in the iPod Touch was because it had 2 slots for memory and the iPhone only had one. But shoot, I wanted to buy, but I wanted a new UI also. Maybe I will wait for iPhone 3 with new interface (if the rumor is true)

"The most significant feature of 3G mobile technology is that it supports greater numbers of voice and data customers — especially in urban areas — and higher data rates at lower incremental cost than 2G."

"Typically, they provide service at 5-10 Mb per second."

Your post sounded like Glen Close in "Fatal Attraction"! It's about speed btw.

Never Happen

Never happen, the price points will never dip an additional $100 dollars. If it doesn't go up, it will remain the same. The iPod is an ecosystem of all makes and models and there has to be a clear differentiation between the touch and the iPhone. It is good to dream though, I would love it if it happened.

hence they said in the aricle a changed case "slightly thinner enclousure"

I'd love to them to drop the 8GB, make 16gb $299, 32gb, $399, and then that leaves from for a 64gb some day at the top of the batting order.

waiting for iphone 3 lol...
there isnt even a iphone 2 out there and u are already waiting for 3?
well its gonna be a never ending story... technology keeps going
and when ur iphone 3 is avaible u propably dont want it anymore and prefer to wait for iphone 4 because it is so much greater -__-
waiting a few months i do understand... i am waiting for the macbooks redesign too... but waiting over 1-2 years ... nah no thx

yeah i share smeagols opinion...
if the iphone should be cheaper no one really no one would buy a ipod touch...
its like digging its own grave

iPhone OS is to big project to make a replace especially after SDK announce, i think its going to evolve in same way as normal OS ;p UI changes? i think only in cosmetics ;p

iPhone OS is not a firmware its a full mobile OS ;>

Yeah...

I'm in. If 3G is as good as they say it is with the Apple OS, no way I will not get one of these as I am in a covered area. It does seem annoying when having to not use the Wifi.

If Apple comes out with a 32GB version, I'm done. I will buy this before I even sell my current one. Which is working just fine too.

And with the new 2.0 release, yeah, this will be most excellent.

This is a very sad/lame projection for the iPhone "2.0".

Add 3G. No upgrade in storage. Insignificantly thinner. And it's now "high end" ... because it looks prettier.

There are a few other tweaks, which, however, may be less than you would expect from a next-gen iPhone.

Here's hoping that article is very wrong. How is the track record for TGDaily/IntoMobile.com for predictions and inside info?

I call BS you cant fit 32GB of chips in the iPhone vs 16GB Just go look at flash drives. Look at two of the same brand, they physically are not any different on the outside. If it's a matter of one memory slot vs two well someone needs to get off there a$$ and fix that issue ASAP.
For example I was shopping Newegg.com yesterday and the 16GB and 32GB drives look the same to me. SO you can fit the same memory in the same physical space. You can have a 16 for around $60 and the 32 is a shade more than double. They just don't want to give us a 32GB device at the moment.

Call quality can be clearer with WCDMA than GSM. Other than that reception still depends on your proximity to towers. 3g can fall back to edge when needed.

You might also see more power drain if you're juuuust in range of a 3g tower but have edge on other towers, since the phone will try harder to get the 3g signal.

I'm getting quite excited for this. Even with technically better phones on the market I always though even the 2.5G iPhone was the best phone on the market (in that its the first high end phone that made me want one).

Roll on June! Can't wait to see what happens with the iPhone. I'm hoping for 32gb, GPS or better location software, and 3G.

Iphone Micro/Mini

I was talking to an Apple employee about 2-3 weeks ago about the iPhone. We were both bringing up things that we like and don't like about the phone. Her main complaint is that it is not as small as other similar phones on the market. Then she mentioned that she can't wait for late this year when the iPhone Mini comes out.. Then she got real quiet and said that I didn't hear that. Upon talking to her a little more, I got a little bit more detail about what seems to be planned--

The 3g iPhone will not be the true iPhone 2 .. It will be an upgraded iPhone, yes, but primarily with regard to data transfer. At the moment, the battery life is still not long enough to enable 3g, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS to run together. All one has to do is take a look at the failure of the Tilt and the other Windoze-operated phones. I have a Windows Mobile 6 phone I use for work, and I am not at all happy with the battery life. If Apple attempted to have all of these things running, then customers would revolt. No one wants to charge their phone twice a day, no matter how 'convenient' the rest of the functionality is.

As far as video, that is already a possibility with the current iPhone, but one that has not yet been harnessed. Other phones are able to carry 5MP cameras and VGA video recording, but they also weigh more, and do not have the multi-touch capability of the iPhone. The 3g phone may unlock recording capabilities, but it will still be running on the same hardware.

The iPhone mini, however, will be more of a 'toy'. By harnessing the newest battery and charging technology, Apple will be able to make a phone with all of the current iPhone tech, but at 2/3 the size of the iPhone. This will appeal to many users that are still shying away from the iPhone. My wife for example- I had gotten her an iPhone when it was first released, and she hated it. It only did 1/2 of the things her Razr did, and didn't come close to my Blackberry. She ended up giving it away to my brother. Since then, she has switched to a Blackberry Pearl, and loves the functionality and the comfort of the smaller phone. With the release of an iPhone with a smaller footprint, I can almost guarantee that she (and many other women) will switch to Apple.

About 8 weeks following the release of the Mini, we can expect to hear the announcement of the iPhone 2 (or whatever they will be naming it). By then, all of the kinks with the battery and 3g will have been worked out, and there will be time for the WiMax network to have deployed in more areas throughout the USA and the world. WiMax is being pioneered by many large backers, and will be the newest and fastest standard for voice and data. Google, Microsoft, and many of the major CellCo's have been working on switching over and supporting the standard. Expected speeds are 2mbps-14mpbs wirelessly throughout the US and Europe. This will enable true Voice and Video over IP, allowing the iPhone to handle hi-definition voice and video transfer and communication. Apple is waiting for the infrastructure necessary to handle the data before it will release the hardware. There's no point in putting out a toy that no one can play with :)

We will be seeing alot of innovations in the next couple of years, and the Mobile tech wave will be one of the biggest. Keep your eyes and ears open, and don't let those that doubt affect your optimism! How many 'haters' were saying that the iPhone was going to be a flop? Those same individuals are the ones on the forums complaining that they are not getting ALL of the functionality they want TODAY, lol.

They MUST increase the memory!!

They have to up the iPhone storage to 16GB/32GB at the current price points.

:apple: always does this with their iPod devices when there is an update. After this much time, if they do NOT double the storage space, they'll virtually guarantee that those who have been sitting on the fence (like myself) will NOT jump into the game now either. Also, there is no real incentive for current iPhone owners to "upgrade" to the new device if there is no memory difference. (Must current users likely won't feel the need to switch just for the other features--but their maxed-out storrage space is a good incentive).

With all the iClone devices out right now and coming out soot, :apple: has to be very aggressive if it wants to stay competitive in the niche that it invented. People need a good reason to switch to AT&T, and most of them don't even know what 3G means. You need to give people what they already know they want--more space!

There is already a 32GB iPod Touch. They have to release a 32GB iPhone at the $499 price point at WWDC. If they don't, they won't hit their 10M goal--mark my words!
